Don’t expect an easy semi, James and Patrick, Here we go again

802

Kilmarnock had a pretty ropy start to the season, defeats to Motherwell and Ross County coming either side of a win at Hamilton, but they travel to Celtic Park tomorrow on a run of three consecutive draws.

They will be confident of scoring (scored in five of their six league games while we’ve yet to keep a clean sheet), and there is the added incentive that if results to their way elsewhere, a win could see they jump to fifth, behind Celtic, Hearts, St Johnstone and Aberdeen.

Brendan Rodgers will have a few selection options to consider with Champions League duty coming up on Wednesday. For these two games we’re going to perm two from Toure, Sviatchenko and Simunovic in central defence, one of Dembele or Griffiths as striker, while Gamboa could make his Celtic Park debut tomorrow. I’m hoping for a straight back four against Manchester City.

The other big area of outfield competition in the team is for the right midfield berth. James Forrest and Patrick Roberts both make good cases for inclusion. Don’t be surprised to see them subbed for each other in each of our next two games.

I see a lot of confidence after the League Cup semi-final draw, pitting us against Newco next month. This game will be six weeks after the 5-1 drubbing at Celtic Park, when a vast chasm between the teams. I expect us to win, but I also expect a considerably more difficult time.

We had the run of the show earlier this month. Moussa Dembele mustn’t have been able to believe the space he got, something denied to him by more tactically aware teams like Alloa and Inverness.

We benefited from the capitulation of one central defender, Senderos, shortly after his partner was subbed as part of a tactical change. The sight of Joey Barton unable to get off the ground to intercept Mikael Lustig’s cross for Celtic’s fourth is unlikely to be repeated.

In short, Newco’s mistakes were so evident and avoidable they are bound not to be repeated. The semi-final will be a different game.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist about last night’s draw but the League Cup has been a financial lifeline to Newco, who were rewarded with large home attendances for earlier rounds, and will already be busy selling premium hospitality content for the semi-final. There could be enough income in this one to buy more Velcro for the roof.

Here we go again………

Hot on the heels of that magnificent news from Mary’s Meals that we will be feeding 650 school kids in Liberia for the next year, I’m running the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon for the Foundation on Sunday, 3 October.

We’re getting to that time of the year when the Foundation’s plans to assist those most chronically in need in our own community need to kick in. The winter challenges aid providers. It kills many poor and homeless.

If you can help, please do. There’s a MyDonate page here. Your money goes straight to the Foundation, where it will used quickly.

Thanks.

  1. Sorry, I’m just catching up with posts on here this Sat morn ( early…4.26am) My cat rules the roost !

I listened to the mauling that Chris Sutton gave to BFDJ on that ” show”.

Were they both in the studio or was one on a telephone, just curious ?

For years, especially before we had the TV coverage that we have now I would often listen to Radio Clyde.

I cannot remember the number of times BFDJ would come out with some of the most contradictory statements especially regarding a Huns match.

They would be playing at home against St Midden for example and after a dire first half ending in 0-0, the rankers Boo boys would be clearly heard over the radio. BFDJ would have been saying that the rankers were poor in that first half, whilst at the same time incapable of offering up any tactical nous to improve matters for the hun.

After 90 odd minutes, and the rankers finally scraping a win ( 1-0 or 2-0), in his post match summary, BFDJ would tell everyone that he thought “rankers played well today, and fully deserved their victory blah, blah)”

More times than not, he had convievently forgotten that during that dire first half, he himself had stated that the Hun were poor, and also completely ignored the billy Boo boys !

    He did this so often.

Big Sutty was 100% correct to call him out, and insist that he was nothing more than an apologist for that Hun mob. For BFDJ to state that he had no respect for Sutton, merely underlines that he had lost any argument.

It was interesting to hear big Chris remind him hiw he had fully supported Whyte, Green and Fatman Coisty, and BFDJ denying all of that .

He always was, and will always be a numpty who loves to pander to tgatvike support at every turn. It’s maybe worth remembering that this dafty was the manager of Patrick Thistle at one time, and he soon got sacked for no having a Scooby !

  2. I’m coming to Scotland next month for only the second time in over 20 years. The weekend I’m there is the Motherwell game. Looking at the ticket opportunities (not many at all), there is a “padded” area in section 140 in the lower Jock Stein – any thoughts? I assume padded is padded seats? Or is it padded to stop you banging your head on the wall??

This will be my first game in Scotland since the 1985 Cup Final (the only game after that was the Rapid game at Old Trafford), so I’m looking forward to it. Any suggestions for a good place to sit are welcomed.

  3. I meant to mention that in those games that I mentioned in my post above, it would be 0-0 for about 80 minutes, with the bear support most unhappy, and along would come THE penalty for rankers that finally broke the deadlock.

More often than not, the away team would go looking to an equaliser and get hit on the counter !

In a post a week or so ago, I stated that the vast majority of football players were not too bright when posting about Barton ( I think ?)….BFDJ is simply the classic example that completely supports my opinion !

    Lovin it !

  4. DDOUGAN, ah the 1985 Scottish Cup Final ( that was in fact the 100th Scottish Cup Final), with David Provans superb free kick ( 1st free kick goal in a final), to level the match v Dundee Utd @ 1-1.

In the final moments big Roy Aitken chased a lost cause towards the touchline at the main stand, swung over a cross, and BOOOOOM, Frankie MacGarvey met it with a stunning horizontal flying header into the net for the winner !

Superb stuff, although there were mixed emotions some days later, when the Celtic manager decided to sell Frankiebhoy ?????

He did, and it turned out that that Frankie’s stunning header would be the last time he ever ” kicked” a ball for the Hoops ( if you get my meaning ?), as he was sold that close season…shocking decision by Celtic / David Hay ?

The ” reason” for selling Frank ( serial hunskelper), was widely rumoured to be for non football reasons ?

To many Celtic fans Frank was a hero, he did all the spadework for Nicholas, McClair and a certain Judas. All three of them would happily acknowledge that fact methinks ?

Frank was right up there with Jinky, Bobby Lennox etc, for always being singled out for special treatment by opposition defences ( especially rankers), but he always just dusted himself down and got on with it ! Total respect for Squiddley Frank as a Celt.

Yes the ” padded” is padded seats.

Although hopefully the Celts performance will have you on your feet for most of the game DD ?

    Enjoy mate.

  5. DDOUGAN…Celtic v Rapid mob was in 1984. I too was there.. Horrible night in so many ways. I ruined my best suit and nearly lost my false teeth when big Roy Aitken hit the post at 0-0.

True is we didn’t p!ayt well that night.

  6. I had it in my head that it was after the Cup Final, not before – funny how the mind plays tricks. Thanks for the correction!

  9. Good morning friends from a dissapointingly drizzly, blusterand grey EK. However, it IS matchday and yet another chance to take my place in Paradise to see The Champions play.

  10. The most entertaining aspect of the Sutton v BFDJ on-air spat was that they had clearly set the former Celtic striker up for a major kicking, but obviously did not expect him to bite back the way he did.

As the presenter introduced Sutton, you could tell from his confrontational tone that he was rubbing his hands with glee, metaphorically at least, as he prepared the ground for a mauling of the Englishman.

Once Big Chris got into his stride, they had to let it run, because in reality, they started it. If it had been Sutton phoning up and instigating the spat, they could have pulled the plug, but they couldn’t, because THEY built it all up.

To hear BFDJ’s bottom lip tremble as he tried to fight back with trembling voice was hilarious. The bully had been left lying in the dirt with a bloody nose, in front of the entire town.

He was part of the big set-up, so to say he was disgusted with himself for even talking to him was a bit rich. They thought it was going to be an easy wind-up and couldn’t take it when their target ate them for breakfast and spat them out again.

Remember that feeling you got as a kid when the hero rode into town and shot up the gang of roughnecks?

    Pure magic.

  11. fergusslayedtheblues on

    Morning fellow tims

I also listened to the well overdue calling out of BFDJ on snyde last night .

What really surprised me was that the host of the show allowed CS to say what he said without interuption and the seemingly contrived set up and answer from BFDJ .

Maybe decades of cheating ,false registrations ,suspect officals and MSM agenda have made me a bit paranoid over the years but I got the impression that CS was being set up .

I think in CS the peepil realise that they have a loose cannon in their midst and that my friends ,just won’t do ,it won’t do at all .

I suspect there will be a concerted effort to have CS removed from his position at BT ,ASAP .

BFDJ has been as CS stated a ragers and sevco puppet for as long as I can remember and not once in all that time has he been called out as such ,my question is WHY NOW ?.

  12. No way CS was set up, Gerry McCullough had been in contact to see if CS would either appear in the studio or on the phone, SSB has been promoting CS upcoming charity doo, Gerry instigated the “spat” and with CS they knew exactly what they were getting, the whole point of it was about CS being outspoken on BT so am afraid any thoughts of a set up are wide of the mark

FAC the ACT ????? – To cut a long story short, anybody who takes a blow-up-doll into CP and hangs it from the roof to annoy the huns is a clown. Ah mean, do some folk not realize the lay of the land in this country ? The hurt of the polis re: everything that has happened to the establishment fitba team, will have they’re thirst to arrest Celtic supporters at fever pitch so, why put yerself on a plate for them ? Ah mean, if fans are serious about getting rid of this act….?….then, get the creators/colluders of the ACT(Celtic PLC-Hierarchy) to announce that, Celtic FC will no longer be participating in Scottish domestic football as, with the benefit of hindsight, we have agreed to make our fans line-up to be sitting ducks for a criminal record, all in the name of supporting Celtic FC. Filling blogs with appeals to FAC the ACT cause a couple of yer pals get lifted for hanging blown-up dolls is the wrong turning. The ACT is here to stay cause, the PLC-Hierarchy sold Celtic’s soul whilst you were all scoffing jelly & ice cream. Mugs ? Maybe ? Then again, you might just be too innocent for yer own good. Apart from a couple of nameless, throw away paragraphs dropped onto the clubs official website, what have Celtic PLC-Hierarchy had to say about the ACT ? Seems to me that some Celtic fans will have to more cute – alive to the situation….imho.

On the pitch, hopefully James Forrest will continue to be Celtic’s Ribbery-Robben, and the Jozo looks like a bit of alright, Paddy isny fit – keep him oot the noo, in terms of a rb, would we not have been better going for Logan of the Dons ?

Sutton vs BFSDJ – Sutton was superb. But, he reminded me of Alex Thompson, ok to come up here and shout yer mouth off if ye can fly home to England after it, eh ?

    ……off-oot-zzzzz…….

Big Chris Sutton bitch slaps BFDJ live on Snyde and the station toadies inadvertently set it up.

Their world is crumbling around them in so many ways and their desperation is palpable.

  16. Morning everyone, well Sweden was a blast!

A great country and I was based in a lovely town called Boras near Goteborg . As expected the price of drink kept me sober and I even managed a wee 5K in lovely sunshine.

Back to reality now, the gym beckons as I look to ease out the wrinkles from a tough 5K yesterday, then parents house, shopping but no Celtic Park!

I will be in Glasgow early evening as I am being dragged to Andre Riu at the Hydro tonight! Bad planning by myself however my lhad is up from London and will be my representative in Paradise.

Looking forward to a good performance from the Hoops, a good pre theatre meal in Princes Square and some quality family time.

Have a good one each and every one of you.

  17. Tim Malone Will Tell on

    Very entertaining.

Interesting to hear BFDJ trotting out the ‘negativity’ argument – is Warbo working him from the back?

Even when trying to defend himself, he can’t come up with anything original.

Chris Sutton seems like a breath of fresh air – trying to provide a level of punditry that’s been taken for granted in England for the last 10 years.

  18. Any truth in the rumour that the shaven headed striker who liked blue, then seemingly green before finally making his mind up and going back to the blue, has utilised a drinking vessel to assault someone?

  19. By the way, heard the Chris Sutton stuff last night….good entertainment. I had a picture in my mind of BFD holding his “blanky” sobbing gently at the programme end.

  20. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

    Good Morning.

What has to be remembered is that Derek johnstone is employed by Radio Clyde and the Evening Times to say things which will “sell” to Rangers/Sevco punters. He is not employed as a neutral pundit and we know from others that it is written into their broadcasting contracts that they have to tow a specific editorial line and follow a certain policy.

Radio Clyde offers neither a genuine unbiased analysis of football matters and is not a genuine phone in programme in my opinion.

    To other matters.

It is wet cold and blustery outside which makes things particularly difficult for the homeless.

Over 40,000 people were officially homeless in Scotland in 2012 and the figures will be worse this year.

My sleepout campaign with the Celtic Charity Foundation has so far received over £2500 in donations which is fantastic. Much of that is down to the generosity of people from CQN.

Obviously I am trying to raise as much cash as possible as it is for a very good purpose. For example the Loaves and Fishes Mission provided homeless people in Glasgow with beds on more than 4,000 occasions between November and March of last year and they are one of the Foundations partners.

So if anyone fancies increasing the total by pledging say £3 per goal (or any other sum) scored against Kilmarnock that would be great.

    BUT BUT BUT

Cash is not endless supply in every household so if you have only got a couple of quid to spare PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep it for the KANO FOUNDATION bucket collection today and give it to them to support the fantastic work they do.

    Cheers and Hail Hail

  21. Chris Sutton is working his ticket.

Yours truly posted last season he would find life is Scotland with its ‘media’ closed shop very different when he went pro Celtic.

Slagging RD was good for the box office, and he’s ramped it up calling it as he sees it on the Sevco pitch.

He’ll wave goodbye when he gets a proper media gig with BBC Match of the day.

  22. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

CS was obviously on the phone therefore editorial interference would not be possible. CS would know this. He took his chance and laid down his marker like he has done his whole career. His only loyalty is to CS and BT. He knew his subject exceptionally well. Having been diddled from medals and bonuses you have to suspect it’s not just professional pride that motivates him.
