Dunfermline catches up with former BoS Masterton

1047

Gavin Masterton, who as managing director of Bank of Scotland in the 1990s, was one of the financial lynchpins behind the issuance of credit to some of the leading investors in Scottish football, and was responsible for what was seen as reluctance to extend competitive terms to Celtic AFTER Fergus McCann’s takeover, today issued notice that one of his companies will be wound up, as it cannot meet commitments to repay loans by new Dunfermline Athletic owner, Christopher McBay.

Masterton came under pressure, which he eventually relented to, to write-off money he loaned to Athletic to allow it to avoid liquidation last year.  He also claims these developments will lead to his personal bankruptcy.

In September last year, Ian Fraser, author of Shredded, an analysis of the debacle that was the Scottish banking industry, wrote in his blog;

“Charlotte Eighteen, a shadowy company based in the tax secrecy jurisdiction of the British Virgin Islands, remains the subject of intense interest among Scottish football fans. Allegedly the holding company for the business assets of Gavin Masterton, the former treasurer and managing director of the Bank of Scotland, it looks like it could be the crux to an extraordinary financial scandal at the heart of Scottish football.”

In March last year, Mail on Sunday wrote: “Bank of Scotland wrote off a £4 million loan to a company owned by Mr Masterton – then sanctioned the £12 million loan to another of his companies that allowed it to skip repayments for the next 35 years.”

In 2004, The Sunday Times, explained that while Masterton was at Bank of Scotland, an associate of his received a loan to buy Dunfermline Athletic, which included a guarantee that the loan would not need to be repaid until the borrower’s shares in the acquiring company were sold.  Two years later, after Masterton left the bank, his company bought his associate’s shares and gained control of the club.

I bet the British Virgin Islands are nice this time of year.

Sean’s Trust, the charity setup by our late friend, St John Doyle to aid those dealing with stillbirth, are holding a Terry Christian stand-up comedy evening at the People’s Palace on 24 October.  The show, Confessions of a Recovering Catholic, is a light-hearted look the legacy of his Manchester-Irish upbringing and has received excellent reviews.  Billy NoWell is also on the bill, performing some of his unique material.

There’s a bar and buffet, tickets are only £16, email seanstrust@gmail.com for details.

    Re the Jackson article.

I support RD while vilifying those who appointed him.

He should never have been appointed as there should not have been a vacancy.

Meantime he has my support. But he inherited players who performed better under a different structure than the one he has introduced.

I think he needs to go back to square one. Instead of trying to improve those players he has to find out what made them successful in the first place.

    Then stage two.

At the moment he is making good Celtic players perform badly.

He is also making good Celtic fans perform badly.

I disagree, he is not getting the committment from Neil Lennon’s players that he should be getting.

Oh, I just realised I agreed, Neil got the very best out of His players but the slide was happening, most definitely the Board didn’t back Neil when they should have, before Karagandy.

A few have said that this whole regime will stand or fall because of Ronny Deila, a bit of a shame really to carry that sort of Burden. Ronny will do well at Celtic, IMO. I couldn’t listen enough to him when we were getting beat by Legia, adversity is when you want to hear good things, I heard a Man that has a plan.

Name me one player who will go on to a better environment when they leave Celtic, Scott and Craig possibly, that means the comfortable zone ones, the ones who won’t or can’t take responsibility will move on downwards, that’s life, they will all still be very well payed for doing a JOB that is sensational.

Celtic are in 1st gear at the moment, IMO, under Ronny D.

  2. philvisreturns @14.27,

I have to agree with much of what you write, especially the bit about the Coalition for Yes. I can’t see how they could have had a real shared vision of Scotland. To me, apart from rejecting Salmond’s total evasiveness, I couldn’t see Scotland voting for the socialist nirvhana that had so many on here excited.

To those who answered my previous query,

Many thanks. I was afraid that would be the likely outcome. Scotland, of whatever hue, will never get the better of the likes of Murray and Masterton.

  3. Not sure Celtic performed a massive pile better last season looking back.

Better defensively in domestic gages, yes. But we took some thumpings in Europe as soon as we strayed from the hard to beat shape.

Personally I wasn’t upset at NFL’s departure. I think he was prudent in choosing when to leave.

  4. Mega fit regime???????? What is all this talk?

Am I the only celtic fhan who looks at this team and cant see 11 mega fit players

Even if they were mega fit, fast runners alone doesnt win titles. If it was that easy st mirren would have all their players running around the local track and hey ho, before you know it, they would be champions of europe and mo farah would be the captain of Barcelona

Pure and utter Pash being talked about the fitness levels of the side who lost one solitary league game last season.

and as for all you who are Ronny D, are you sure you are no Sunny D?

Pure Pash. Your eyes must be shut every week

but hey, some sevconians still think that ally two salary’s is a genius too.

    It takes all kinds eh?

I read from that that you are going out of your way to support Ronny D even though you do not agree with his appointment and the way he has team playing, tactics or team selctions. Am I correct? It’s becaus e you want to support him not because he has done or is doing anything that merits your support.

I do not support him right now as I do not believe his philosphy cannot be implemented and enforced in the Scottish Game in such a short space of time. The process should be gradual and focussed on the education of players with particular attention being paid to the more youthful within our squad.

I have seen nothing, one game apart that gives me any confidence in Ronny D. I would love to say I have and that I can see something in what he is doing that has me thinking this is going to work. I believe he has used 28 (or is it 26 players) so far this season and we are not even out of September yet. Every thing about him is far too fluid and changeable. I just don’t like what I see or trust that I am missing something and he has what it takes to be successful.

Success is not winning the SPL! Sally McMoist could manage us to the SPL (ok i took that too far:-).

I agree we took some humpings in Europe. but from Barcelona.

the gulf in class, however between Barca and Legia is quite wide.

Anyway when we did get defeated in the CL – I put it down to lack of quality compared to a side who had the ability to massively outspend us several times over. I never once put it down to the fact that it was because we lacked fitness, Lacked quality compared to the likes of barca, without a doubt.

  10. Has Neilly been offered any managerial posts anywhere since he jacked us in?

If he was a great coach why isn’t he being snapped up by loads of EPL and ECL teams who have replaced their coaches whilst he was/is available?

    I don’t understand it.

My thoughts too. There was nothing special about our performances till very late on in last season. Then again, even with £5 million plus players, Martin O’Neill’s teams were not always a great watch.

What’s the difference, materially, in a Ronny Deila Celtic team beating St Mirren 2-1 away from home and a Neil Lennon Celtic team beating Partick Thistle 2-1 away from home?

Is it just that by this time last year, having been in the post of 3 years, we had gotten round to trusting Lenny’s team?

Whereas just now, with Ronny Deila, there isn’t a great deal to place our faith in, and thus we need more to be convinced?
