Energy in abundance but discipline key

286

If you cast your mind back 50 weeks to the visit of Barcelona to Celtic Park you may remember we took to the field with a so-called skeleton squad.  Captain, Scott Brown, was missing, as was Hooper, Stokes and Izaguirre.  Of those outfield players on the bench, only Paddy McCourt had made a dozen appearances for the club.

We lost Lustig and Samaras to knocks during the game, replaced by Watt and Kayal, respectively (yes, an 18-year-old striker replaced the right back).

The script was written.  We have another enormous challenge ahead tonight but I would rather tackle Ajax than Barcelona.

There will be an abundance of energy from the crowd, and from the Celtic players, but discipline is all important.  Don’t make unforced errors, don’t take unnecessary risks, don’t pull jerseys, and most importantly of all, don’t concede free kicks in dangerous areas.

The team who makes the fewest mistakes will win the game; we don’t need to be desperately creative, just stick to task.

This is our Cup Final, let me at them…

Fair do’s, – but you get my drift about ‘attacking’ a superior side to Clifftonville, Elsfborg or Karagandy.

Our Barcelona, Milan or Juve type results are with break goals, built on resolute defending, and we now need the Ajax at home scalp, for the collection, or any chance of CL progress.

Of the Euro sides you quote at least two from any four are ‘regular midfielders’ except Man City * who were thrashed *

I still hope Joe Ledley plays, as he’s more holding than Sammi or Forrest, giving us a three of a kind, Kayal Charlie and Ledley, and as you say Stokes tracks back, – so I’d leave Pukki on the bench.

Perhaps taking whatever chances present themselves would be equally imporant as discipline.

  6. Ach well, I will set for 5th, not bad on the phone. To all those going tonight, enjoy. By the looks of things I will be in Corby in the KK club which looks like a little oasis, unfortunately I will be sober.

  10. Good Luck to the Bhoys tonight and enjoy the evening all of you lucky enough to be in Paradise.

Like many others I will be watching in from abroad and wishing I was there.

I live in a city with a huge football team in 1. FC Köln, very passionate supporters who turn up 50,000 strong even in Bundesliga 2. Although not a supporter I have many friends who are and believe me, how they dream about just being in the Champions League.

We are truly fortunate to be able to call ourselves a Champions League team and whilst the vagaries of football finance dictate that for now we have a fairly uneven playing field to negotiate, we should nevertheless be thankful and enjoy the experience of coming up against the best Europe has to offer.

Ajax will be a tough one; they have the pedigree and the players to expect to be in Europe after the New Year.

Remember win, lose or draw, this is the show and The Glasgow Celtic are there.

Hope to see a few of you in Amsterdam in two weeks.

Very, very nervous about this one tonight. I agree with Paul, least mistakes wins it, but also a wee bit of magic and/or luck especially never goes amiss either!

Cant wait now. As usual very little work done today as the anticipation grows.

Enjoy the game everyone and to those, like me, who are lucky enough to be going, Sing Loud and proud as always.
