Falkirk 1-3 Celtic

582

Falkirk played some good football at Hampden this afternoon and looked competitive with the bottom half if the Scottish Premier League, but Celtic scored three, hit the woodwork three times and had a good goal incorrectly disallowed for offside, emphasising how comfortable a day’s work it was for the SPL, Scottish Cup and League Cup favourites.

James Forrest reached the goal line and cut back to Scott Brown, whose shot was deflected onto the post before rebounding to Gary Hooper who made no mistake.  The nearside linesman did nothing for the reputation of Scotland’s officials by raising his flag despite a second defender being inside the six yard box while the Celtic striker was 8 yards out.

Six minutes later Thomas Rogne got his head onto a Forrest corner but saw the effort rebound from the crossbar.  Falkirk maintained parity for 27 minutes before conceding cheaply.  Darren Dods, aware of Rogne’s potency at set pieces, hauled the Celtic defender to the ground inside the box from a Mulgrew corner.  Scott Brown converted the resultant penalty.

Stokes could have made Celtic comfortable six minutes from half time when he connected with Hooper’s cutback but his shot was blocked.  A minute later Falkirk were level.  Victor Wanyama misplaced a cross-field pass to Cha in the middle of the field, Emilio Izaguirre had pushed forward while no one dropped back to cover.

Cha and Wanyama both had chances to get tight on breaking Falkirk players but Higgingbotham feigned a shot and rolled the ball into the path of 17-year-old Jay Fulton, who finished clinically.

Within a minute of the break Rogne had a chance to put Celtic ahead again but mistimed his header before Gary Hooper set James Forrest through with Falkirk keeper McGovern to beat but the winger was denied.

Falkirk’s best chance to win the tie arrived six minutes after then break when Fulton drifted in unattended at Celtic’s left but his half-volley from 7 yards flew over.

Thomas Rogne hit the cross bar for the second time with a deflected shot after another Mulgrew corner.  A minute later Anthony Stokes put one foot in the final when he lifted a free kick over the Falkirk wall and into the side of the net.  It wasn’t the hardest struck free kick but he caught McGovern mid-jump on his line, so the keeper was slow to move to his right.

Falkirk pushed forward whenever they could and Duffy got the better of Joe Ledley to setup Alston but the substitute couldn’t convert.  12 minutes from the end Fraser Forster made an impressive double save after a corner.  He stopped the first from Darren Dods and then saved from Stuart Murdoch.

Ledley saw a shot from a Matthews cross deflected over before the Celtic full back cleared at the other end when Weatherston got behind Wanyama to cross.

Gary Hooper secured the win for Celtic when he collected outside the box after 85 minutes, turned his defender and headed for the bye-line.  His cross was converted by Stokes with Ledley waiting if needed.

I’m not sure why we are having this debate on Scottish Independence…..there is no way a majority of the people in Scotland will vote for independence, and I don’t mean that as a criticism of Scots. It is just not going to happen, since the majority of Scots are happy to remain as part of the United Kingdom …!!….my own view is that the English should be independent, the Welsh should be independent, the Scots should be independent, and (all) Ireland should be independent…..but not under the EU…ther you go, now let’s tal about the Bhoys in Green….

Let me say what was my pont. That clip was made by the guy who supports the other team, not Wisla. They were misses from between 2005 and 2007. Many games, I think to check and find misses.

As you probably know, I’m Legia Warsaw fan, the team whose biggest rivals in Poland are Wisla for who Brozek played.

    Ernie,

Credible alternatives? who – Harman? Balls? Murphy? (no allegation intended). The Labour Party is populated by career politicians now, people who’ve gone through Uni with no other intention than to be equipped with the political language and behaviour required to make good copy, prevaricate and obfuscate in a debate, and twist the knife when an opportunity for self-progression appears. In other words, the same as the rest. I don’t see anyone with any integrity, I don’t see anybody who doesn’t treat the electorate as sun-reading idiots, I don’t see anybody with real and demonstrative compassion.

There’s no suggestion that they would ever do such a thing.

  13. Gordon64,

I’m amazed by your surity on the independence issue.

This SNP Government has lost it’s moral compass. Power corrupts and, just as whomever aspires to the Whitehouse has a reliance on public support of Israel and all that entails in America, so this SNP Government knows which side it must butter it’s bread.

This country is a generation away from being cured of ills of bigotry and racism. I will take my chances as part of an imperfect union with Wales and England for that generation before I would allow my destiny and status to be determined by an SNP Government whose failure to address bigotry and sectarianism in Scotland has taken us backward in a short few years.

Jack McConnell was on the right track in tackling “Scotland’s Shame”. Salmond dumped it because it was a vote loser among the peepel.

This Scottish Government or the status quo as part of the union? Easy answer.

Please refrain from cheap jibes at those who oppose your view on this subject. This one will divide the Celtic support, and with good reason. It goes against my natural instincts, but this country is far from ready for independence.

They are the biggest liars in the world as we all know, their wage bill is humongous and will be the weight that drags them into the financial mire. THEY HAVE THROWN CAUTION TO THE WIND AND ARE SPENDING WAY BEYOND THEIR MEANS TO WIN THE LEAGUE TITLE FROM US. Even if they do win it, which they wont, the financial returns wont go anywhere near repairing their Mammoth overdraft. When we win 4iar they are going down the financial toilet

Moving away fae laymans terms –

Reference “the sick man of Europe” relating to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire due to financial difficulties, and somewhere in the origin of that phrase is a quote attributed to Harold Temperley who did not apparently say “sick man”, but said ” sick bear”

    Something along the lines of;

“The ‘bear dies, the bear is dying, you may give him musk but even musk will not long keep him alive”

I do not believe for one minute that Scotland would become another Northern Ireland, things have changed and people will all have to club together.

SNP or a Scottish based opposition Scotland run by its own people for the people who live there or London ruled and by the Tories bleeding us dry?

Just remember when the oil goes Scotland will be given Independence whether you want it or not. Keep voting for the London parties and that is the future of your future family.

As for Michelle Mone? She said she’d leave in 2007 if the SNP won and then again in 2010 and now she comes out with this nonsense. Well hen, you have about 40 employees in Scotland and a few factories in China. Yeah, your business is really important to the whole of the Scottish economy. Away doon tae England if that is what you want but jist remember, you’re not only Scottish when it suits you and you’ve told us you were leaving twice already, what’s keeping you?

If we resigned from the SPL without having a readymade route into another (better) league, then the only people to benefit would be the enemies of our club and all that it stands for. Even if we threatened to resign, they might just call our bluff.

Personally, I think the board will vote against the introduction of any Newco Rankers into the SPL, but could well be outvoted.

If that happens we take the case to UEFA & FIFA and advise Sky/ESPN that we will refuse to play the Newco club, so their TV deal won’t be worth much.

How would the SFA/SPL explain that?!
