FFP hits the mark, Atletico-Hearts of 86

2160

It remains a possibility that Atletico Madrid will lose today’s league decider against Barcelona and next week’s Champions League final against Real Madrid (vernacular: ‘do a Hearts), but I hope not.  The fact that they have pushed the two most celebrated football clubs on the planet to the limit, across two tournaments, is already remarkable.  Should they deliver on two fronts, it will be the most stunning achievement in European football in 47 years.

There was a healthy amount of bloodlust for the Uefa Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules to fine the life out of the likes of Manchester City and Paris St Germain, before banning them from Uefa competition.  This was never the point.

What Uefa have done is bring Europe’s two most freely spending clubs into line.  FFP will restrict City and PSG’s expenditure, transfer market activity and squad selection.  This is a result.

It’s a pity we’re not at Celtic Park to lift the Scottish Cup today.  *!*!

Enormous thanks to Tommy Gemmell and everyone who participated in the entertainment here yesterday.  Tommy thoroughly enjoyed the banter and will be back on the blog below this article early this afternoon to catch up with the questions he didn’t have time for yesterday.

Aye you’re correct about a group of fans, not the whole of the celtic support. There’s not been many youth players that have had a shot and let themselves down. For whatever reason they don’t get another shot then get loaned out. Atajic is the prime example.

All player I mentioned came through the ranks, were part of successful Celtic teams and were full internationals. You may not rate players but by definition any player who does the above is a success story for our youth set up

  5. Bournesoup. Lol indeed derk

I don’t mean bringing the youths to Scotland. I mean setting up youth teams abroad and reducing the ones with no return here

Yup scots are just not producing players

Maybe we need Jackie fae Poland back to breed

  6. SydneyTim,

For our investment our return has been poor. First class academies & first class facilities is not relating to a first class return. That I will agree with.

IMO we have spent that much money on projects our “Kids” are not getting a fair crack of the whip.

It seems we need another ” Antalya ” tournament where we had to have six teenagers on the park . Ok we got beaten, but did they let us down against powerful opposition.

ref the debate yesterday about same. Especially Kojo,s astute analysis.

Where I disagree with you is that ” its the same all over the UK”. I would point you to Southampton or possibly even Brentford.

    HH. always in Celtic.

  7. Lions roar. Indeed lol. Our boys ran out of steam but you could see the Saudis sweating on their beards, plus they were still drunk from their night at vickys

Interesting-to me,at any rate-piece on a guy who has made some very telling contributions to the debate about ‘too big to fail’ banks, and a few other things.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/andy-haldane-the-coming-man-of-british-banking-8975109.html

    Particularly this bit-

“In a seminal 2010 speech, Haldane put a figure on the broad cost to the British economy of the 2008-09 crisis (possibly as much as £7.4trn). He put a figure, too, on the de facto hidden public subsidy to our largest banks as a result of their notorious “too big to fail” status (an astonishing £50bn a year). These calculations played a vital role in swinging the political debate on banking reform from “let’s go back to the status quo as soon as possible” to “actually, things really must change”.”

Pretty eye-watering sums of money. Like being hit somewhere by a turnip.

Is pukki better than Dylan ?

I have always said invest heavily in a few top players ( players that will give the fans some heroes ,Pay them well then back them up with youth Instead we fill our squad with average foreign players and some really poor ones ( derk pukki Balde as an example )

Darnell Fisher and Liam Henderson have made an impact this season. I know he has taken time to do so because of a horrendous injury but young Filip Twardzik had a great game in the final game of the season. I think we’ll see more of him next season.

Good morning and enjoyed your visit last week: you can swallow those pints.

I was only making a point that Wales are not allowed to make their own decision on whether the pubs can stay open or not.

It is pathetic that they are forbidden from making their own decision on such s matter.

Your not seriously trying to defend the Westminster’s ruling on this?

It’s like a forty year old asking his Da if it’s okay to stay out late

Thanks bhoys :),sydneytim has a point that has been around for years in football, getting bhoys of 16-18 years old ,to make that leap to consistent first team/squad member.A bhoy posted a few weeks ago that we had around 30 coaches at Lennoxtown for various age groups (seems a bit high), but who coaches the coaches ?How much does Lennoxtown cost per year ? Are we better just buying a ready made player instead? The ratio of players making it to the first team ,has been very poor IMO.

  14. Originalsadiesbhoy

Would love it they do Fischer more chance than Liam as Liam is scottish and scottish players tend not take the next step. Why they don’t is a mystery

@Bryce9A @_aldo93 I think he’s been rightly criticised for making public statements which have been proven to be nonsense.

Chris Graham actually said that about someone else. My God they attract the brainless.

  18. Kev. I was only going back 10 years but indeed if you go 35 years indeed. Charlie and Paul and Mcgeady are about it. Gets worse when you look at it like that In the days of Paul and Charlie there was no training center. No 30 coaches etc etc All that money we started to put in about 15 years ago has brought Mcgeady. Poor poor

  26. Lionsroar. As we have not produced any more players from our youth system than say dundee united Motherwell or Aberdeen. Should we not scale back our scottish youth system ( bet dundee united spend a fraction coaching their youths to our costs ) and use that saved cash to look at youths overseas ?
