Inter trepidation, Packy, Tommy, Joe & Patricia

809

Inter have hit a bit of form recently but comments coming out of Milan indicate their visit to Celtic Park is viewed with some trepidation.  The stadium’s Champions League reputation remains fresh in the memory, even if the team has been transformed since the last major victory over a truly top team two years ago.

A number of those who will play for Celtic on Thursday will have only seen those great European nights on television.  Playing in front of 60,000 Celtic fans will be a new experience.  Transforming this support into an energising force is our job.  Inter’s first objective will be to frustrate and quieten the crowd.  My hunch is that this will be difficult.

We have the line-up confirmed for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which is at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  Topping the bill for the Q&A is Packy Bonnar, Jock Stein’s last signing, who made his debut on St Patrick’s Day 1979.

Packy’s Celtic and Ireland team-mate, Tommy Coyne, will also be taking part.  Tommy had an incredible career and speaks intelligently on football, and life in general.  We’re also delighted to have Joe Miller.  Joe played in the same Celtic team as Packy and Tommy.  Part of our historic Centenary Team, he also scored that unforgettable Scottish Cup Final winner.  More recently Joe formed the Association of Former Celtic Players.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein’s first game as Celtic manager, which takes place that week, we also have Jock’s personal friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson will speak about the great man.  If you’ve ever needed inspiration…..

I’m also delighted to confirm we have Celtic’s First Lady of Song, Patricia Ferns, who is making the journey over from Ireland for our night.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

One constant in transfer dealings is that it will always consist of success and failures

No one even the best has or continues to get it correct in the buying and selling of football players including Jock Stein and Alex Ferguson

However some of our cheaper buys from ouwith the british market have failed spectacularly Amido Balde being the best example, when i first saw the big man i just laughed, Derk Boerrigter unfathomable given his history, the article does state better giving youth a chance ( Henderson, Fisher, McGregor ) rather than millions of Euros wasted on bad buys

Happy with both of our recent acquisitions, Kris Commons and Garry Mackay Stevens at around reported fees of 300 grand, with Craig Gordon a free, outstanding purchases who gets praise for those signings i wonder

“Big Jock always said we’d win,” Jinky recalled last time we met, “but, to be honest, I thought we’d get a right gubbin’. I can see them yet standing alongside us in the tunnel waiting to go out on the pitch: Facchetti, Domenghini, Mazzola, Cappellini, all six-footers wi’ Ambre Solaire suntans, Colgate smiles and slicked-back hair. Each and every wan o’ them looked like yon film star Cesar Romero.

They even smelt beautiful. “And there’s us midgets. Ah’ve got nae teeth, Bobby Lennox has’nae any either, and old Ronnie Simpson’s got the full monty, nae teeth top and bottom. The Italians are starin’ doon at us and we’re grinnin’ back up at ’em wi’ our great, gumsy grins. We must have looked like something oot o’ the circus.”

  4. I wish folks would stop bleating about ‘bad buys’ and ‘flops’ like it’s some new phenomenon that never went on in the past or doesn’t happen at other clubs.

Sad to say the SMSM will not be balanced and report the truth of the Gallowgate scandal, there is a need for an inquiry (politicians should be demanding an inquiry Justice committee )into who was responsible for such an embarrassing police shambles, it wont happen, it doesnt suit agendas and some political future’s

What I picked up from what sj was telling me was that the cops knew early doors nothing was going to stick so they made it as inconvenient as possible for the accused.

    Remember Alfreð Finnbogason?!

An intelligent, thoughtful and well researched piece – the antithesis of the kind of tripe posted by the usual suspects on here who hate Peter Lawwell and our board, and would presumably have Jeanette Finrot, Eddie Tonedeaf and the CelticTrust running our club.

A lot of these people find so much to hate about Celtic, so why don’t they ‘toddle-off’ and start their own club and leave the 99% of us in peace.

Astonishing to read this and then to consider events of a few Friday’s ago when Hearts came to visit Ibrox. Despite lots of stories of REAL violence and sectarian bile, audible to all, the same Police Scotland saw fit to make one arrest, yes, ONE.

Disgusting is not strong enough when you think about it. PS Scotland’s present behaviour shames them and all of Scotland and demonstrates there is an inherent bias that’s being tolerated by all in positions of power.

My understanding of Derk’s past was that he was tipped for greatness (and indeed he has shown flashes of great play) but obviously he was knocked out the game for a while with a bad injury.

On that basis I’d place him in a similar category to Craig Gordon (with the exception of course that Derk cost money). Both were a risk given their injury record. One worked out spectacularly, one did not.

Would I have taken the risk with Derk given the type of player he was meant to be and the type of injury he sustained? Probably. Would I take that risk again. Probably not. It’s a lesson learned.

Some other team might take a similar risk in future and it’ll pay off and perhaps we’ll regret not making a move for that player. Who knows. Transfers and scouting is not something I’d like to stake my job on.

“….and leave the 99% of us in peace.” Alfie Noakes.

I would think many of the alleged 99% would rather belong to a percentage that did not include the intolerant Alfie 0:-)

I have to stick up for the Derk signing a touch. Agreed his fitness record made Darren Anderton seem like Alf Tupper but somebody who had played that often with Ajax had to be good, hadn’t he? Well no as it turned out because after that now almost fabled first 20 minutes against Ross County he was as rotten a winger as I have ever seen in the hoops. Over the years we and everybody else will have signed plenty of players who almost everybody was happy to sign because it seemed they could not fail. I know I was delighted when we signed Gary Gillespie., thought Haraald Brattbakk was a master stroke and Raphael must be good.

Generally our European scouting for attacking players seems to unearth nothing but flops. Not just the three from 2013 but Miku, Lassad and Bangura ( there are others) with the rest of the scouting both overseas and nearer home being I think very good – aside from Juarez and Murphy it is hard to think of a total dud signing excluding those overseas attacking players since NFL took over.

The lesson to me seems to be that quality attackers will cost more than anybody else (does not actually mean they are better players but that is the way it goes) so perhaps there should be some acknowledgement ( from fan, coaching staff and board member) that £2,2m on a defender will get us a better class of player than a forward at the same price.

It is a difficult job and maybe some adjustment in thinking needed come the summer signings.

It was mentioned that Pat Bonner was Jock Stein’s last signing. This was questioned, was it not Frank Munro? The question linked to his obituary from 2011.

    Easy mistake to make.

Efe in for Adam and James F if fit for GMS , or move AM into that position.

No way will Ronny start Efe.

No way, either, that Ronny will play anything other than 4-2-3-1.

Both Matthews and Izzy are weak defensively but they will start, with the two wide attacking midfielders expected to cover back.

If there’s a question mark over starting places, it’s in the wide attacking midfield positions.
