Jota more important than Carter-Vickers

467

Our two loan signings on the final day of the transfer window, Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers, have been crucial to the (presumptive) outcome of the league title, the latter more so than the former; Cameron could easily have won Player of the Year.  Despite this, it is Jota who is the more important to secure on a permanent deal.

Having watched Newco suffocate our midfield twice in a month and Bodo/Glimt do the same earlier in the year, to the extent that we struggled to build periods of possession, never mind attacks, we need to answer the question, why was this?

When our central defenders have the ball, they face options of either trying to find a full back or Callum McGregor, or hope that someone further up field is in space.  Those options were snuffed out by Newco, causing a nervousness as players took possession with an opponent breathing down his neck.

What would Kristoffer do?

Kristoffer Ajer would step forward with the ball, drawing opponents off their markers and immediately creating space.  He could then play a short pass or, if he was not challenged, continue a run through the middle.

It is reasonable to claim Celtic have the best two central defenders in the league, even the previously maligned Carl Starfelt is a model of solidity.  The problem is, neither can carry the ball forward as effectively as Kris Ajer.  We need at least one central defender with this attribute, preferably two.

Ange Postecoglou is not going to change the way we play.  Next season you will see our central defenders in possession looking at man-marked team-mates.  We either address an identifiable problem, or we are in for more of the same.

The first job of a defender is to defend, and we all remember the shambles of last season, even with Kris, but despite my fondness for Cameron and Carl in this respect, we need a rethink.

I recall someone out with the UK said they couldn’t believe that two set of fans from the same city could be so diverse.

I would open that argument to , to set of fans from one country😵

The old “you cannae be a real Celtic supporter” jibe is trotted-out again, because the kernel of the argument has been lost. It’s playground stuff, the equivalent of “my big brothers bigger than your big brother”.

The facts are stark, let’s be big enough to face up to them. Hating every single thing about Rangers is not a prerequisite for being a Celtic Manager, a Celtic Player, or, a Celtic Supporter. Beating and bettering them at every turn is our aim – it is a worthy aim!

  4. It’s on my bucket list to go back to Seville.

Crying shame, the huns will tarnish the great rapport we have with the locals.

Why did it have to be Seville ?

  5. Wonder if the media will ask if they have ever played Frankfurt in Europe before.

  6. Reality we can do feck all about it , so why worry about it,

Concentrate on Celtic, the Huns have won nothing yet & may well end up winning nothing but either way, keep it Celtic.

  7. I think the huns will win the final, I don’t think German football is particularly strong this season. A mid table German side won’t stop this hun team. They’re still zombies though and we have still won the league.

Our CL bounty won’t be as transformative as we’d hope it to be but we go again next season. It’ll be a real fight.

That lot going to Seville is like someone coming into your house and tramping shite all over your carpets.

“Beating and bettering them at every turn is our aim – it is a worthy aim!”

And we did it playing wonderful off the cuff football with no apparent coaching style and wangled a 6 point lead over the master race in the league, won more points in the Euro League stage than them, and won one more cup this season than they have.

Oh! and we avoided the bottom 6 that some perceptive (same root as perception, doncha know) people predicted.

    Some team ra Cellik

  10. Remember Bhoys, Seville is like the European Cup and 9 in a row.

    We did it first!

Back to my earlier point, focused on hearts on Saturday now, c’mon the hoops.

Rangers are still in liquidation and contested the 2008 europa league final. Sevco were formed in 2012 (companies house) and are contesting their first euro final. It is a good achievement for them for sure. Sevco are celtic’s main competition but they are not the same rangers and did not rise again.

Does that make me a petty celtic supporter or someone living in the real world ps ask the facepainters, hmrc or victims of serial abuse if sevco 2012 have accepted responsibility or paid the dues of rangers and you will get the answer. Sevco has adopted the same racist and bigoted of rangers and for that alone they are a loathsome club not worthy of praise or respect.l no matter their achievements on a football pitch.

  13. 3 huge parties to be had for Celtic fans who can enjoy it before their trip to Seville is the focus shifts.

Assuming we get the result on Saturday which should now be the focus. It’s no gimmie vs Hertz.

Our faithful will be a bit edgy I am sure.

A week of celebrations pre their big day. Then we can enjoy seeing their season fall away to nothing amidst getting a ranking by the German fans who will be hugely represented in Seville.

  14. But one thing we can do is tell them they are getting f@@k all tickets for Paradise next season.

And of course Seville is in Andalusia and the flag of Andalusia is green and white…and it flies from prominent buildings…They will see that as a provocation… any excuse will do.

CCV is not a ball playing, ball carrying centre half. But he doesn’t waste the ball either.

He’s a rock and next to an Ajer type would create a formidable pairing.

Starfelt has been massively helped out by being next to him. Just because CCV isn’t a creative defender doesn’t mean he’s not vital.

  22. Will we start to take Euro football — especially CL football — seriously now?

No more stuff from the board acolytes / PL property buddies / Hame’ll dae me types that CL football is not for the likes of us.

RBL were poor — three players looked as if they had money on the TFOPD2.1.

42k stadium less 15k for UEFA and sponsors. Split circa 30k between the clubs, 15k max each. That leaves at least 30k roaming the streets. I don’t see the Spanish cops showing any leniency.

  25. We can only hope Frankfurt beat them. I can see it being very tight. Ive just checked the forecast and its 30 degrees in Seville on the 18th. Lets hope they lose and there is nothing left in the tank to beat Hearts less than 72 hours later.

  26. Anyone thinking Frankfurt won’t take as many as thems to Seville is deluded.

Mourinho is now the first manager to reach the final of a major European competition with four different clubs.

Hard to be magnanimous when awakening to the currants’ big win.

But the morning mist slowly being burned off the rise of the Yarra Ranges tells me it’s still a beautiful day.

And wow – all our understandable resentments aside – it’s no mean feat to get to any final at that level.

Shame Moyes’ men fell at that stage as the Hammers are a very decent side, with quality players.

Natch, I want Eintracht to do the bizo at the big dance in Seville.

Might be wrong here but it’s my understanding that the Europa League winners qualify for the group stages of the Champions League unless they have already qualified via their domestic league in which case they forfeit the Erupa League qualification.
