Before this Europa League group got underway the trips to Istanbul and Amsterdam looked daunting. Those games produced two credible draws, but things went wildly wrong elsewhere.
Our goal last night was a peach. Dedryck Boyata split the Fenerbahce defence to open up space for Mikael Lustig to cross for Kris Commons, who peeled off his marker to create the space to head home. Unfortunately only one point was collected as we lost another Keystone Cops goal.
Craig Gordon seems to be struck by a lack of conviction this season. His was not the only failing at our repeated corner kick fiascos but letting a ball trickle through his legs as he appeared caught in two minds is indicative of a player who is doubting himself.
You know Kris Commons scores and creates huge goals for Celtic, we’ve discussed it often enough here. Despite his veteran status and apparent ill-fitting to our system he remains by far our most effective player.
For Ronny, it didn’t go wrong in Europe this season against Fenerbahce or Ajax (I’m absolving him of blame for Efe’s error or a last minute breakaway goal at Celtic Park), it went wrong home and away to Molde and Malmo. We appeared to underestimate both. Did the manager have something to prove against fellow Norwegian managers?
Celtic dominated possession stats in all four games against Molde and Malmo but the Scandinavians exploited the acres of space which simply didn’t exist in our games against Ajax, Fenerbahce or Qarabag, for that matter. Ajax, Fenerbahce and Qarabag got the respect they deserved, not so Molde and Malmo.
The failure is, of course, more complicated than that. Jozo missed the bulk of the campaign, while Dedryck is only just beginning to look like a footballer (lovely pass for the goal last night). Scott Allan looks promising, but we’ve not seen enough of him either due to injury.
Curiously, Ronny’s big 2015 No. 1 striker target, Nadir, looks less like a Ronny Deila player than anyone we’ve bought in years. Knowing we were interested in him, I watched his performances against Celtic last season, and made the same observation at the time.
What happens if your keeper’s form falls off a cliff, one of your new defenders doesn’t settle quickly, two other new players miss months through injury, and your new striker doesn’t morph into a different player? You finish bottom of the Europa League group.
Celtic must now consider their strategy for January. Successive transfer windows have left us weaker, not stronger. Identify the reasons, remediate and we can build on the away performances which bookended this Europa League campaign.

Auldheid, I admire your perseverance and all the work you put in on behalf of Scottish football fans. I got banned off RTC blog for going against the grain and questioning whether RFC(IL) would indeed be found to have been using a tax avoidance scheme. I was subsequently banned off SFM when I posted that BDO weren’t there to find guilty parties and right the wrongs of the previous boards.
Some will say that BDO have been instrumental in providing evidence for Police Scotland to persue their case against Green and Whyte etc. But where are the charges against Murray? Is there one person out there that really believes that the tax scams really only started in 1999?
We all know about the Andy Goram drink driving conviction where his lawyer produced his P60 in court that stated his income was £1000 per week when everyone thought he was earning around £10,000. BDO have their hands on the paperwork from these years yet nothing has emerged and you and I know nothing ever will come out.
Whyte was set up to use Murray’s words he was duped, he actually thought he was going to do a scam but in reality he was scammed by Murray and the establishment.
I really do hope you get the result your efforts deserve but this is Scotland and no way will you ever manage to pierce the veil protecting the establishment,
Big Nan knows how powerful they are. Ask him about “Nimmo the Dimmo”. I actually laughed out loud when the SFA announced he was to be the head of the panel.
You really couldn’t make this stuff up, only in Scotland could they get away with this.

Its roots are deep and widespread. We live in an age where instant gratification is demanded in all things, so people are conditioned in to wanting to see everything resolved in an instant.
Well I for one and thousands like me no doubt are prepared to wait another few months or couple of years until the day of reckoning finally arrives!
When it does -then I sincerely hope that you and the others who have carried on this struggle have your day in the sun!

In the last 3 years his downsizing has destroyed the club and revenue has fallen from £76M to £51M yet Lawwell takes £1M from the club despite successive CL failures which he contributed to by picking a puppet and selling our best players to replace them with the DUFC trio. No alignment between football failure and CEO compensation.
I wish I could put on some green tinted specs, blame the Media and pretend all is well.
However that is a parallel universe. The Bonus Thief with his heated driveway has been dismantling the club piece by piece for 10 years. The first 3 or 4 thousand season tickets we sell are to take care of our Director of Football.
Of course we can blame the puppet RD. Did RD sell Victor, Joe Ledley, Hooper, Virgil, Ki ? Did RD buy projects Rasmussen, Bangura, Scepovic, Pukke ?
