Ntcham signing and market change

615

Olivier Ntcham, 21, yesterday became the third most expensive signing in Celtic history, the initial payment was slightly north of the £4.5m quoted, and there are add-ons which are likely to take the total price above that which was paid for Chris Sutton and John Hartson.

The most striking element of the deal is that the player has played only 39 games in senior football. Compare this to van Dijk and Wanyama, who had played over 60 games before coming to Celtic, and you get an idea of how the transfer market has changed in a few years.

60 games is now too late. You need to be on the ground watching and ready to move inside 40 games. More than this and top talent will likely already be competitively priced out of reach.

A consequence of this trend will be an increase in one element of the transfer risk: any scout would prefer to see more than 39 senior games before making a recommendation. But this risk is mitigated by the fact that waiting on a player to increase in value, only introduces the risks associated with paying a higher price.

Then there is the risk of doing nothing at all………

What we do know is that everyone at Celtic, the management, scouts and board, are happy to have secured Olivier’s signature.

Welcome to Celtic, Olivier.

You know when the PSNI say, “The only way you can have the game in Belfast that week is if it’s on Friday and there are no away supporters”. Then Linfield insist on having the home game first due to TV money. Then someone else at the PSNI says they did not block Celtic fans from attending?

Well, that just happened.

Here is the new CQN Podcast…

I worked with Ms Grogan at a rave thingy in secc, 1990 I think. Lovely lass. I had just returned after many years abroad and didn’t know who she was…I think she liked that…

  4. The 10 and 64 buses used to end up in the East End, I think. Way way back I used to get the 10 from Carntyne to Knightswood. Didn’t the 64 run near Celtic Park. Great service, if I remember correctly, while the 10 was only a half hour service. Really got me thinking now: I think there was a 10A too. Too long ago now…..

Am I the only one who read P67’s comment this morning about PSNI, and thought ‘WTF?!!?’

Unless I have missed something, this is pretty serious stuff ….. but, once again, why is P67 speaking on this matter, and not Celtic PLC?

  6. Hello,

    Bit of advice sought.

I will be landing in Glasgow central just after 2 pm on Saturday.

I was going to drop the cases at left luggage then get a train to Dalmarnock.

Is this the best way to get to the game, bearing in mind the time restriction?

    Thanks in advance.

    A snippet of our reply..

But that statement met with surprise from Parkhead, where Celtic chiefs responded on social media by saying: “We are extremely surprised by this statement and the timing of the release.

“This is clearly not our understanding of the situation and we stand by our statement of 23rd June.

“We feel there is nothing to be gained by commenting further until the tie has been played.”

Parkheadcumsalford , you are ang on about the 10 and 10A buses.

The 10A would turn off Crow Road then go along Danes Drive by Victoria Park anf terminate at Scotstounhill. The 10 would head up through Broomhiil then Jordanhill and on to Knightswood.

The 64 ran from Auchenshuggle to Mountblow in Clydebank , staight along London Road , Argyle Street and Dumbarton Road.

It only runs from Argyle Street to Carntyne now . It used to run past the front of Celtic Park but it now goes up to the Forge retail park and Forge shopping centre.

Steve Caulker. Read a story about him couple of weeks ago in I a if the English broadsheets on line. Sad tale. Everyone deserves a second chance and if Brendan knows him well from Swansea then he has earned the right for his judgement and management skills to be trusted. Either way I hope the guy well no matter if he ends up in paradise or not.

Auldhied. I’m counting the months. But as I’ve said all along I am not convinced that Celtic will act but will be overly delighted if they do.
