Pivotal shift for Celtic

333

Amid all the consequences of Champions League group stage qualification, lies a subtle shift in the calendar for Celtic that could prove pivotal.  The club has started competitive football for recent seasons in the first or second qualification round, often in the first week in July.  Added to our habit of reaching (and winning) the Scottish Cup final, Celtic’s close season has been truncated into a period of between six and eight weeks.

This year, we will have an impressive 11 weeks to rest and rebuild before the cinch SPFL Premiership campaign gets the competitive season underway on 30 July.  Consider what that differential means for the fitness coaches.  They were previously tasked to allow the players sufficient rest, then accelerate their return to peak condition to avert a potentially disastrous exit from European competition.

In recent years, this has resulted in giving players as much time off as possible before a three-week fitness ramp up.  You and I can speculate on what impact this has on Celtic’s multi-season catalogue of soft-tissue injuries.

Preseason is also when the base layer of endurance is laid.  Players can do speed work between games, but they cannot do endurance work and play a game five days later.  This training is only effective if it exhausts and breaks muscle fibre, allowing a natural period of regrowth, which builds the muscle.  Squad-wide, it does not happen during the season.

We have seen enough hamstring injuries, as well as Celtic players looking exhausted late in games, to know we have preparatory issues to address.  We also know the fitness coaches are not given the opportunity to work on either matter effectively.  This close season is such a change to the norm, the techs at Lennoxtown will have no realistic experience of how best to spend the valuable weeks handed to them.

Getting it right could extend the careers of the likes of Callum McGregor.  It will also make the type of football Ange Postecoglou wants to play more achievable.

What by questioning where you got this from👇

:That’s fine. What happened last night in the awards was acceptable for you.”

Hypocrite at every stage you are a troll nothing more could be said. I made a valid pont you try to discredit as it’s me.

  3. Will let those reading to make up their mind. As I could not be any less interested in your views, your posts every five minutes or your visable multiple personalities.

Those who are easily offended are easily manipulated…….😉

  4. Give me an example of where I censor you Troll?

  5. Oh dear Martim youv been asked before to talk about your offensive imaginings, multi tag from anonymity like yourself

Your actually believing what you imagine.

  6. I wasn’t suggesting you were, it was a general comment on the received wisdom that we’d do better if we had a D of F. It’s lazy thinking, all the successful clubs do it so so should we. It ignores all the unsuccessful clubs who have a similar management structure and the ones who we do better than.

Out of interest what is it about Benficas model that you find so attractive? They are €145m in debt, which would be closer to €250m had they not sold their ground to their major shareholder. They are desperately trying to find someone to pay for the naming rights to the stadium to help service the huge debts they have. If they don’t make it through the qualifying rounds of the CL after finishing in third this season they are in serious trouble. Sound familiar?

Can you imagine Celtic £120m in debt playing in the DD-owned Screwfix arena?

  7. You are already discredited Martim

Your previous imagining at the death of another cqn’r

    Show that.

Give me a laugh, whose my multi monikers? Feel free to name troll.

    You manipulate no one Martim

You can’t explain your own thinking let alone tour imaginings.

  9. Personal attacks again, started by you again, only to certain posters whilst being nicey nicey to your chosen special ones.

I don’t need attention like you do.

  10. Benfica are a basket case. Kept afloat by debenture loans, and by selling their ground, desperately looking for funding wherever they can find it

They owe €55m more than they are owed in transfer fees. They don’t even wholely own their own players.

As a publicly listed company none of that is open to us.

If the club sold the ground to DD it would be burned down in days

  11. Apologies to the blog for having to read this cr*p. I’ll be excused now to attend to loved ones.

Haven’t seen the speech transcript but went to a few SFWA and sports media do’s back in the day.

Some were attended by couples but mibby not the writers dinners and the stuff of the time was very near the knuckle…the laugh in the locker room/old boys club enviro was, often, in the shock value that someone purposely went there and delivered it with brio and good timing. There was an expectancy to be rude n crude.

The best/roughest corporate speaker then was ex-Well player John Gahagan who’s on record with one of his fave jokes as:

‘Paula Yates should be playing with the England cricket team because she’s the only person in the last 10 years that has gone Down Under, f***** the Aussies and came back with The Ashes.’

That joke would not be well received today.

If our players – Japanese and others – were targeted by the Billy boy’s banter, you can bet it would be done so as a guaranteed SFWA crowd pleaser.

Probably going along to South Melbourne stadium – a smashing wee stadium close to us – on Friday night to support Ange’s Hellas in my Sellik tap, HH

Good to read you’re standing your ground.

Watched Paddy Roberts push his team forward tonight, in the Lusset here in OK.

I’ll be back on Wednesday to see Celtic win the league. Brace yourselves, huns.

  18. Maybe the whole concept of after dinner speaking is outdated.

Mainly rich middle class white men who dress up like penguins and crack ” dodgy” jokes to a like minded audience while quaffing copious amounts of the finest bevy.

It is 2022. Women have now joined the football party. They are no longer just serving the meals in short skirts.

The after dinner clientele is now diverse. It is virtually impossible to be funny without offending someone.

We all need to embrace the new normal. What was acceptable years ago is no longer acceptable. More and more previously ” acceptable ” occurances are under scrutiny.

Which brings me poignantly onto our song book. Some of the content is no longer acceptable and if we dont self police we will be taken to task. That my friends is inevitable.

  19. CELTIC40ME @ 11:24 PM,

Please read the context – I clearly stated at that time 2004/5.

A lot of water under the bridge. Ajax found their way to maintain their position in Europe. Their excellent academy – great Club structure, very professional approach and buy in from the support.

Benfica had the Brazilian Imports of course like all the Portuguese Clubs, remember Deco.

    Various Clubs using various means.

So you don’t copy anyone, you do what works for you. I have said many times before, what is wrong with just being very good and excelling in what you do!?

I’ve never said there was anything wrong with PL’s balancing the books. What was wrong was the operations side. Did he ever complete a project?

Our executive needed a blueprint and a road map and a risk averse route – what you really need is talent, energy and winning mentality.

    AN TEARMANN @ 11:38 PM,

    Hope all’s good

Cheers, if you could dig them out I’d appreciate it, a scholar of the game…

    Hail Hail

  20. Dundee U,with Celtic going for the League,on Sky,are happy for this showpiece game to be played in a half empty stadium.Going to outlandish lengths not to accept money from our support.

What is the problem with these fekin lunatic chairmen.

  21. Chairbhoy

I’ll tell you what would surprise me, if Ross Wilson does prove to be the real deal the know it all’s put their hands up and say I was wrong – now that would be a first:))))

    ——————————————

I don’t know who the know it alls were about Beale anymore than I know who ever said “Celtic can’t compete in Europe” or the evidence of “seismic” changes in the running of Sevco. My recollection is that lots of people felt Beale might be or was the brains behind them.

Similarly, I haven’t seen anyone ridicule Ross Wilson tonight. I have seen people be sceptical about whether he is as good as you assert, that is all. And Beale is not proving to be as obvious as a strategic force in the EPL this season but I would not seek to make too early a judgement on the guy.

P.S.- Fans of Benfica and Ajax would raise several eyebrows at Celtic claiming to be a peer of theirs. They were competitive at Euro level throughout the late 70’s, the 80’s, 90’s. noughties and tens. Much more so than us. Even our 3 CL last 16s and a lost Euro final did not see us reach the standards they have maintained for 40 years. They have outperformed us and have to be regarded as historically superior teams to us.

  22. Will be delighted to hold their hand out for the Uefa payment due to us being in the groups.

Re the dinner speaker thing.i think they are a relic of a time gone by,been to a fair few since early 80s.

The whole writers ceremony needs redone.its bit clichéd now.

It’s a misogynist mentality that needs approached at the top about their whole approach to woman.these daft bastids will be sitting wondering what they done wrong.

I can assure you the Jim Delahunt / Tommy Burns story is absolutely true. In fact I posted the details on CQN the day after it happened which would have been circa 2000/2001.
