Priorities for next season

195

Of course, the priority is nine-in-a-row, even more than Champions League lucre, but I see a bit of chat about prioritising the league and player development, at the potential cost of the domestic cups.

I don’t think this will work.  Along with Queens Park, Vale of Leven, Rangers and Aberdeen, Celtic have now won the Scottish Cup three successive seasons.  None of the other did four-in-a-row.  Celtic fans, if nothing else, cherish making history, we cannot just shrug at the opportunity to set a new Scottish Cup record.

The League Cup is the only trophy we do not have a historical precedent to chase or eclipse next season.  Jock Stein won his first five League Cups as Celtic manager (although went spectacularly off plan in subsequent finals).

For teams competing in Europe, the League Cup is a four game competition.  A home or away match in August and September, a November semi-final and December final.  Games take place between European qualifiers or group stage games, when demands on the players will be greatest.

Last season, Brendan Rodgers prioritised the Heats semi-final at Murrayfield over Leipzig away, three days earlier.  Had the Leipzig game been at home, it would almost certainly have been the priority.  Squad management worked well.

If we do our job right in strengthening the squad, there will be plenty of opportunity to rest players during the league campaign, but I suspect we will feel precious about the domestic cups.

  1. Paul is correct, we need to add strength. We should be improving the starting 11 not the fringes of the squad.

At gk we have bain, gordon, hazard and the kid that was At ayr. Dont see the need or benefit to spend there.

We have church (highly rated kid), gutman (returns november) and hayes who can cover KT but people want us to buy a backup leftback, sorry but no reason to spend here!!!

Rightback we have ralston and perez (return november), that is a priority area to spend.

At centerback ajar and jozo are good players. Welsh is good prospect but again we need a commanding centreback so money needed here. Compper and henry are not very good and i wpuld be happy to see both go.

We have enough winger and prospects on our books here.

I reason Midfielders will be needed because rogic and/ or ntcham will depart. Brown is not getting younger either. So a spend is likely here.

Up top we have eduard, leigh (way to go), bayo (still adjusting) so again money needed on centreforward.

We need at least 4 first team starters to replace the outgoing players. We need a total of no fringe players.

My favourite post on here for ages.

    Thanks again.

Good move for EKFC if Darren signs up dependant on Motherwell’s agreement.

  3. Seems a lot of Celtic fans are now of the opinion that Tom Rogic should be sold in the summer

Inconceivable this time last year when he signed a new deal and was everyone was absolutely buzzing

While injuries and international duty no doubt hampered him this season, i think Rodgers leaving also affected him

Signin a 5 year deal i would say he expected Rodgers to stick around for at least a few of those

I still love the guy and would be devastated if he left

  4. IniquitousIV on

    BHOYLO83

Rogic is skillful and has a good left peg. Unfortunately, he is very one footed and as slow as an arthritic tortoise. His skill does him no good, especially in Europe, if he is caught and dispossessed almost immediately.

If we are to prosper, we need players with a lot of pace. Rogic could possibly survive if he were surrounded by others with pace, but again, unfortunately, the likes of Brown and Ntcham are almost as slow.

  5. Iniquitousiv

I agree he is slow and his lack of mobility and speed is exposed in Europe but when he is on form and at full fitness there is no one better to watch in the SPFL

We dont have anyone else like him and it would cost a lot of money to replace him imo

Sell Ntcham and get in someone else, who has a bit of pace, and actually wants to be here.

  6. Jobo

    You’ve completely lost me there.

The only one I got was Edinburgh Kentucky Fried Chicken (EKFC).

You’ve absolutely right. No need for any further arrivals to be loans or players valued at around £1m. We’ve already goat millions (c) BR.

4 quality players to move us forward in Europe and three steps (and trophies) ahead of Sevco.

SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 30TH MAY 2019 10:46 PM a moral call for celtic fc to pay out money to victims of abuse at celtic boys club. The moral position is taking centre stage because the legal one does not stand up. However, Celtic fc cannot accept legal responsibility for another organisation.

The people responsible for these crimes should be brought to justice and the victims should, like any other victim of crime, go to criminal injuries for compensation and to the person who abused them.

I hope the guys affected find some peace and I hope the guys who carried out the abuse are punished for their acts and never find peace.

  10. Fool Time Whistle on

    STEPHBHOY on 31ST MAY 2019 1:30 AM

I agree that every lawyer advising Celtic, on the board or independently, would tell them that they cannot accept legal responsibility for the actions/crimes of these assailants.

They would advise the board that their primary role is to protect the interests of Celtic FC – full stop.

Unfortunately, as sound & proper as that legal advice is, it reflects only the strict legal responsibilities.

If Celtic were in any liable, they would have been named as co-defendents or would be prosecuted along with any of their staff found responsible.

I think I read somewhere of one victim trying to sue Celtic – but I may have got that wrong.

For me, the reference to the best interests of Celtic FC should be underlined, highlighted & put in block capitals for the board to re-read.

I know the lawyers will tell them that any action or words from which guilt may be inferred cannot be sanctioned, but is that really the end of it?

I am not alone in thinking that Celtic FC, while having no legal responsibility in this horrible affair, certainly carry some moral responsibility.

If the boys who were desperate to be recruited as players by Celtic Boys Club, were instead being recruited by the same men but as representives of Kings Park Strollers Boys Club – would those boys still find the offer as attractive?

If they joined the KPS Boys Club and were subjected to the grooming, assaults & indecency in question might they have been less inclined to tolerate it or endure it? I mean, it would just be an unknown football club for boys so what possible reason could any aspiring football player have for putting up with sexual abuse?

Now if the prospect of being recruited by a top senior club in Scotland directly through exposure in and in playing for that Boys Club was dangled as bait, how many boys would become then conflicted about tolerating the abuse? If the price of playing for Rangers or Hearts or Aberdeen was that they had to endure things they knew were wrong & if part of the grooming was that their chances of playing for any of these sides were much less if they stopped playing for KPS Boys Club – immature minds in pubescent boys could rationalize accepting the abuse. “Celtic” was the name dangled before these children as bait in the grooming.

The ties between Celtic and these criminals were evident to all at the time. Images of them at Celtic Park or in the company of senior Celtic staff are readily avaialble if anyone cares to look.

The point is that the damage has been already done to these victims & in a sense to Celtic FC as a victim too. Therefore the club’s interests are in jeopardy by being victims the first time round when their name was exploited by these men, and now, as its reputation is being tarnished in the media.

It seems to me too that the coded message in some of these attacks is that Celtic’s reaction is being compared to the reaction of the Catholic Church to the revelations about the abuse of children by their staff. The close affinity of the club with the Catholic faith makes these easy dots for ill informed people to connect. it is unspoken and would be denied but it is till out there..

It appears that Celtic want to do nothing and wait for it all to disaappear. That traditional coping mechanism is no longer apt in the age of social media & cell phone videos. It also depends on no more cases of sexual abuse by those criminals masquerading as Boys Club coaches – actually emerging. I have zero confidence that the full extent of these crimes is currently known – more will appear as the poor victims stagger towards closure on the wreckage of their childhood.

Celtic FC need to get in front of this (I’m tired and I can’t think of a better way to express that).

There will be a way to be actively supportive to these victims without incriminating the club or leaving it open to litigation. Accepting their own joint role as victim and as part of the bait in these crimes, Celtic can work with professionals to be part of a solution, or at least mitigate some of the harm.

We have money in the bank & we tell ourselves that we are a club with a social conscience. This problem exists in our Celtic community & it’s time we acted with moral responsibility.

Any support provided can readily be subject to a caveat that no blame can be attached or responsibility inferred or accepted blah-blah-legalese-till-the-coos-come-home.

Sorry again about the length of this but it may help insomniacs nod off.

  11. Good morning from a very damp, wet and rainy Garngad ?

Just read Phil Mcs latest offering, if it is indeed DD preparing to exit as some on here have hinted, then all the good work that the club has done in his 20 odd years as Major shareholder will have been for nothing, if it means hardly any spending in the summer to make the club an attractive proposition, putting 9 IAR in jeopardy will be an Absoloutle travesty.

Might Rod Stewart be interested if he loves the club that much?

I personally do not know what type of job DD done at Celtic apart from buy the largest amount of shares over the years. So again if it is just someone to buy his shares then surely there are people out there with the kind of cash that he will be looking for with Celtic and business at heart.

Then again knowing Celtic, nothing is easy, but this will be unforgiving if we get to 8 and do not forward plan and invest in a depleted of quality squad.

What a season. The trebel trebel. An amazing achievement. We live in happy days.

That fella left us and Neil Lennon stepped up to the mark. The man who started the epic quest for ten. Why shouldn’t he finish the job, get his own statue. If he does it, he will have deserved it, as a player and a manager. Has Neil got what it takes, maybes aye maybes naw but the time is now, he has the gig, and he deserves our support. I only hope that the PLC support him to the ten. We all know that the squad needs a boost and refreshed players to share the expectations of the Celtic family. I am happy as, it is all in our own hands. I smile as I think about the day the Neil Francis Lennon holds the ninth league trophy. Just think what that will mean. Hail Hail.

  13. Good Morning, Mild and Still in the Chilterns, still no sign of the scorching summer that briefly popped up last week…

    AULDHEID – 30TH MAY @ 10:10 AM

On other clubs, they dont have to spend more, just put effective controls in place so “Rangers” behave in the same financially careful way that they do.

It will not remove the wage gap inherent from crowd size but it might narrow it enough to improve their chances of a UEFA place. Look at Killie.

The problem is their supporters aren’t putting pressure on their clubs.

With regard to rinse and repeat that cannot be countenaced because it will endanger Celtic, who are not out of the Res12 woods yet, to a point of supporters realising they are being taken for mugs in a game where rules dont apply at Ibrox.

As a shareholder I question the idea that ” protecting Rangers” comes at no cost to Celtic.

I never bought into the idea that Celtic lost millions as result of what took place in 2011. The team at that time would have been unlikely to get past qualifying so hard cost would be qualifying payments circa £300k.

However under previous UEFA rules covering 2009 and 2010,there is a requirement that even although tax due to HMRC is in dispute, nevertheless full details of individual players that tax payable is in respect of, must be provided or a licence application should be refused.

This creates a snooker. If all details provided then Rangers in the clear but SFA guilty of not investigating the basis of

tax owed, which was ebts with side letters.

If details not provided then licence should have been refused.

(There is also another reason to refuse under ” fair presentation ” of accounts that also applies and might apply to the other earlier years Rangers won titles, but you get my drift)

That puts a different complexion on the cost to Celtic and there surely has to be some assurances that it cannot happen again and yet Celtic are being dependent on the very organisation that may have cost us millions to establish if they acted properly?

That makes no sense whatsoever but it was at Celtic’s insistence that Res12 tried to obtain answers domestically rather than pass Res12, which would have ended the matter given knowledge at that time on UEFA FFP and tax matters was sparse.

It will get worse for Celtic if they are perceived as not upholding shareholders interests by allowing an organisation on whom they depend for fair play, to put Celtic’s chances of continuous CL participation at risk when that organisation (the SFA), have been shown to protect their own interest above Celtic’s.

However although the sums lost may have been higher than just 2011, it’s about sending a message to the SFA and Celtic that they are accountable especially if it can be shown both have been less than honest with shareholders in the handling of Res12.

Or does no one really care and both Celtic and are depending on that?

Well, there us no doubt Scottish Football Fans have become a rather docile bunch, from the tartan army, through the Edinburgers, the new firm to the Tims. All seem to be ready to accept mediocrity as something to aspire too…

What a shame, changed days indeed…

The ironic thing about that… The Gers…

Far from being grateful for their get out of jail free cards, it is them who moan about their lot, unfairly demoted with the whole of football against them they’ve set their face against it determined to reclaim their “rightful” place.

And you know something, they may just do that.

Lack of Ambition from the Scottish Clubs, furthered by complacency and incompetence in equal measure at Parkhead has given them real hope…

Some say it’s the hope that kills them. Actually it was hubris, complacency (knowing they’d not get caught/punished) and incompetence that actually killed them.

It was good to see the Managers speaking out about the officials cheatin’ last Season. But until their Boards do likewise with compliance and Supporters do regarding… well the whole shebang really, but demanding a level playing field.

Celtic for me had a huge chance to profit from Rangers demise, an excellent chance to be regulars in the UCL from 2012 onwards.

Also I remember posting at the time, the fact that if you look at the money Rangers generated for Scottish Football, then look at the money Rangers had taken out of Scottish Football, the blue pound is largely a myth.

The green pound has been far more beneficial. Having said that – The Original Sadies Bhoy, posted a series of very good comments a few weeks back. Now one phrase got me, it was something that had been spinning round my head with regard to Celtic and he stated it, just how I was thinking it… Celtic will always take the lazy or cheap option.

It is important that you continue with Res12, I’ve seen some argue it was a long time ago…

Hardly the point, it was raised in a timely manner, the fact that The SFA, UEFA, Rangers and Celtic have tried to bat this away or even bury it without giving this serious breach proper consideration speaks volumes for the culture within those organisations.

Maybe it wasnt the most heinous of footballing crimes but it is the smoking gun. Al Capone was famously done for tax evasion.

Keep asking the questions, keep demanding answers.

And he’s is not good enough for Celtic??!! The Dembele saga seemed to get to him and it seemed he wasnt being managed well . He maybe felt he was not appreciated enough and lost some motivation. The Celtic midfield, the key aspect is striking the right balance.

For me, McGregor is the natural successor to Brown. Next season I would want McGregor at the base of the midfield in the deep lying position, dictating the play. Getting on the ball and setting off passes.

Further ahead of McGregor, I would like to see R.Christie and A another.

In an ideal world, I would want 2 Ryan Christie’s in there. And by that I mean that any central attacking midfielder we sign or play, must have similar attributes to Christie, in terms of workrate, desire, and willingness to press. THAT TO ME IS IMPERRATIVE.
