Prism of failure gives King chance to bring Newco down

680

After the failure to launch season ticket renewals at Ibrox in the wake of the Ramsdens Cup final last week, by Friday morning marketing staff, PR people, web designers and printers would all have been primed to press the button this morning, after the anticipated humbling of Dundee United in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Things started to go wrong later Friday, when Dave King popped up with an intervention.  King, who was a director of Original Rangers in the years up to and including their liquidation, appears intent on sending the Newco Rangers to an equally liquidated state.  Should we erect a statue to this guy?

For those of you in doubt, his latest questions to Newco Rangers board are priceless:

“Does the board agree it is unfair to ask fans to buy season tickets before they consider the business review?”

No club in the country is asked to submit business plans to supporters before asking them to renew season tickets.  What’s more, there is an assumption by King that spending plans should be expansive, exactly as they were at Original Rangers, when King & co presided over the club’s failure.

Newco’s (even newer) management should be allowed to match expenditure with income.  This is the message that fans should be asked to back, the days of empire are over.  Anyone who tries to undermine a breakeven strategy at Newco is practically ensuring another failure.

“Does the board agree that, given the present financial position of the club, it is appropriate to provide Ibrox Park and Murray Park as security against season ticket advances?”

This is an interesting one.  King suggests Newco offers Ibrox up as security (Murray Park is largely irrelevant).  If they are boxed into a corner and concede this one, those in a position to utilise that security, which in Dave King’s plan would be Dave King, would have an incentive to see Newco liquidated.

“Does the board agree that in the latter half of December 2013 it was in discussions to obtain finance that would be needed prior to the end of the current season?

“Does the board agree that in the latter half of December 2013 it provided public assurances to the fans that the club had sufficient cash to last until the end of the current season?”

King has been there before and will know more than most how financial forecasting works; there is a clue in the name, it’s forecasting.  If a company seeks contingency borrowing for less than 5% of its expenditure (or 2 weeks costs), earlier projections could not have been that far off.

None of this matters right now.  Newco’s manager failed to win two hugely important games and that is the prism through which fans will evaluate the performance of their club.  King could accuse them of being responsible for his own role in Original Rangers liquidation and some would believe him.

Season ticket sales are the most fundamental aspect to the health and wellbeing of every Scottish football club.  This is true even at Celtic, with or without Champions League revenue.  Ticket sales will have a greater impact on Celtic’s season ahead than Champions League qualification.

Right now some hedge funds and the Easdales own Ibrox.  Ideas of bully them into submission will fail, although it will be enormously entertaining.  Go for it, Dave, we’re 100% behind you.

    wee query, still unsure

You collect season ticket money, then what happens in August?

How do we get tickets for games, are you planning on buying them en masse and distributing them?

I realise its more a short term plan to force an event, but what if it doesnt happen the way you envisage?

    ….

I like it, let’s keep the pressure on.

Question though – what happens to any minutes lodged with this trust, are fans meant to donate this and then pay to go games individually?

Ant links to his this actually works for fans?

Good statement and hopefully the fans have the stomach for this.

Sadly some I met at the game on Saturday are still unwilling to hold back as they have a good seat. Unbelievable.

    ..

Still huge questions over the mechanism of the trust, but a very solid and hard-hitting stance.

The board simply have to step out into the line of fire and answer these direct questions for any right-minded bear to be comfortable giving them more money.

    ..

“We have received no response from the board to this proposal, or to the offer of a meeting to discuss things amicably.”

How do the vermin propose to distribute tickets to those who sign up to the Lying King’s hustle?

  5. I tink this is getting too technical for FF’rs

    (I;m impressed with BPO)

What is meant by the statement, “as soon as they agree to give season ticket holders a security over Ibrox Stadium and Auchenhowie?”

You say you’ve engaged a legal and administration team, who pays for them?

As far as I can see, and correct me if I’m wrong, but, unless the administration comes free, we pay… either through a portion of the funds submitted to the scheme for season book moneys, or an additional levy.

Are we to say to the club we’ll give you Big Purple One’s season book money, but we’ll be taking off an admin fee for a scheme we’ve thought up, which means BPO will not pay the full whack demanded by you, Mr Rangers Board?

You don’t consider that any action of this sort is likely to result in administration, based on what? Denying any business a huge chunk of revenue based on conditions that the business may not want to agree to is putting that business in jeopardy whether you like it or not.

“We also have concerns that, even with all the season ticket money available to them, they will not be able to complete the season without further investment.” And how will paying season books into a trust fund address this issue?

“Again, this would be in breach of their directorial duties when they would first have to reject a more favourable offer from the fans. ” Forgive me, but what is this more favourable offer you speak of, or have I missed something?

I’m no business expert, but as assets Ibrox and Auchenhowie are potential collateral for any future loans, it is common practice, and part of a firm’s liquidity to measure the strength of the assets against liability, or potential liability – loans in other words. In fact it’s the very definition of solvency. And it was the cry of liquidity ratio that kept Sir David Murray borrowing ludicrous and unsustainable levels against the asset worth of the business for years.

You can certainly bring pressure to bear, but dictating (some would say blackmailing) how a business operates is another.

Sorry, but I’m currently having a serious thoughts about handing season book over to Rangers, which saddens me; but I’m certainly not about to hand it over to some scheme that is currently only a collection of sound bites and well intentioned statements from a couple of “names.” And neither should anybody else until we see some substance in the proposal.

Am doing a back of the envelope calculation, if only 5,000 season ticket holders contribute to the UoF scheme, they’ll need at least 5 really good staff members to operate it effectively. That’s to process applications, answer emails, the phones, process payments, update account records, make trips to the bank, yada yada.

Typical admin rate in Greater Glasgow, what, maybe £14-£15k pa ? Oh, and an office manager, say £20k pa for them. And premises. PC’s, phones, faxes.

That’s not bad. That’s £100k spent just on the back of my envelope already. Of course, the orgs which make up UoF might need permission from their own members before they can start splashing the cash like that, no ? Some of their members might not be too chuffed, hell, some of the orgs … can’t afford it.

    Eh, so who pays ?

RFC web site now saying Review will be out on April 25th.

    ..

How long do you think it takes anyone with competence to review a business of Rangers size?

    Go on oh wise one.

    ..

I know the approximate answer and it sure as hell isn’t 120 days.

Kindae hoping Big Dave gets the fools to not renew cause I’ve a feeling the hedge funds who run Sevco will sell the assets……that’s if they own them of course!!!

Re Pontius Pilate’s alleged Caledonian birth. Impossible as the Romans didn’t conquer Britain until circa 43AD, Christ died 10 years prior to that. Julius Caesar had made a couple of incursions into Britain Circa 55BC however Roman legions didn’t reach the Moray forth until Circa AD 84.

Another interesting fact the Grampian region is named after a battle between the Caledonian Tribes and the Roman legions ‘Mons Grapius’ Where the heavily outnumbered Roman legions decimated the Caledonians.

  26. As someone who feels we do talk about them a bit too much, I am watching the latest chaos with a total sense of amazement. How can they muck it up when they were allowed to shed over £100 million of debt? I am no business expert but even I can see that they got a ” get out of jail card” ( I know they liquidated ) but a team in blue that play at ibrox is still in the league. It is fascinating..
