Relax and you’re finished, Belfast awash with Seville spirit

655

The day after the opening Champions League qualifier of the season can get a bit tasty on the blog but business has been pedestrian since last night’s professional performance by the men in hoops.  If you wanted to be pushy, you could point to a couple of glimpses of goal which fell Cliftonville’s way as a result of Celtic defenders being dragged out of position, but that’s about the measure of an unfamiliar defence at any time.

Congratulations to Georgios Samaras, who scored in Celtic’s first five European away games last season and obliged again yesterday.  A remarkable record for a player who is never employed as a penalty box striker.

It would also be tardy not to congratulate Celtic and Cliftonville supporters on their exemplary behaviour throughout the day.  After recent disturbances in Belfast there were fears that a group of travelling Celtic supporters could find trouble in the city but the casual observer could be forgiven if he thought we were in Seville again.

Maybe Belfast council should invite us over every July to spread a bit of cheer. We do football very well, in all respects.

Neil Lennon can now kick back and relax with a formality of a second and the next round not for another…. 12 days!!  Maybe not.  12 days is not a lot of time to do anything in football, so every day, including match day against Cliftonville, will need to be meticulously planned to ensure we are ready to face an opponent who could well be midseason. Relax, and you’re finished in this business.

I used to get frustrated that wee Jinky would beat a guy once, chuck a “U turn” and beat him again and again.

I much preferred the direct approach of Wee Wille Henderson.Byline at speed and cutback for Millar ,Brand or Forrest.Painful to watch.

I subsequently heard that big Jock instructed Jinky to play that way, thereby dragging central defenders out of the middle and creating space for Stevie Chalmers,Joe McBride and Willie Wallace.

Wee Jinky .A joy of my youth.

Hearts’ hearing for the notice of complaint issued by the Scottish Football Association for the Tynecastle club going into administration has been postponed until next month.

The hearing was meant to take place yesterday but the SFA released a short statement declaring that “due to the unavailability of tribunal members, today’s judicial panel tribunal has been postponed” and it will now take place on Thursday, 1 August.

The Edinburgh club were forced to call in the administrators on 19 June and have been charged with an alleged breach of disciplinary rule 14, which relates to suffering an insolvency event.

Possible punishments by the SFA could include a fine or suspension or termination of membership from the governing body.

Hearts will start the first Scottish Professional Football League season with a 15-point penalty for moving into administration.

The threat of court action over a partially-paid £100,000 tax bill sparked the decision to place Hearts into administration last month, with BDO taking over the running of the club.

Even Deedle will tell you Jinky was the better winger.

I know him from my childhood and through a family connection by marriage. His not mine.

He has always been a good guy and like his father in particular was in no way a bigot.

He and Jinky were good friends after they gave up football and both helped out with some charity work my dad and uncle did for the local churches and pensioners.

He was as blind as a bat, and Tom Gemmel will tell you he was lost after Tommy breathed on his contacts.

I believe the Broxburn CSC is based in his pub.

I think I’ve mentioned the story before about how I was at a local game in Tel Aviv with a work colleague and his family. His father, a Ukrainian originally, remembered Jinky from the 60s playing against Kiev and he related to his mates in the stand how Jinky bobbed, weaved and turned the Kiev team inside out. He kept on about the hunched red head.

They were all in fits laughing when he translated to them how Scottish refs had Specsavers as sponsors.

Deedle never had that kind of recognition.

Reading back through the posts I came upon a post from the contemptible Singing Detective defending the contemptible Rupert Murdoch.

Defending Murdoch’s media empire as “the provider of truthful analysis” and then suggesting the phone hacking scandal was a ploy to attack Murdoch’s empire by left wing organisations in a bid to scupper Murdoch’s News Corporation’s £8b BSkyB takeover.

    Absolute arrant nonsense.

We all know Murdoch and his political poodles, the Tories and specifically Jeremy Hunt in this instance, were in control of the politics involved in manoeuvring the acquisition process.

I note that the tolerance levels for the trolls on the site is dropping sharply and that is a welcome development. One thing that disgusts me is that they never even bother to sympathise or offer good wishes to any CQN’ers who are sick, bereaved or in any sort of difficulty. They are like parasites clinging to this wonderful site. Everywhere on here you see goodness, Charity & friendship. Of course as in every family we have our disputes but there is a core of decency that is patently obvious that runs through the site. 28. The next level of finance? Did they not raise £22M 7 month ago? Sounds like getting his excuses in early.

WALTER SMITH last night admitted he doesn’t have the business brain to take Rangers to the next level.

Smith, who made history by becoming the first person for 140 years to manage the club and then be appointed chairman, insists he doesn’t want the job long-term.

He insists he doesn’t have the financial nous to do the job properly and is only there to sort out the infighting that has blighted the board.

Smith said: “There’s a level of finance we need to find to progress and I’m not suited to that kind of work.

“I’m not conversant with business or legal matters and that’s why I can’t be a long-term appointment as chairman.

“My focus of attention is getting this club back to the days when the talk was about the team on the park and not who does what in the boardroom. That’s my goal.

“We’ve made huge strides as a club and now we have to find a level of finance to go even further.

“And I’m under no illusions about the kind of contribution I have to make at this time.”

  29. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

Smith said the club’s thoughts were with White’s family.

“I remember when he was appointed as manager and he had such a difficult job at that time, not just because he was following Scot Symon, but because Celtic were enjoying the best period in their history under Jock Stein,” Smith added.

“Davie was also manager of Dundee when I was with Dundee United and, ironically, he brought the League Cup to Dens Park in 1973 by beating Celtic.”

Wee Wally Smith just can`t help himself.

Uses a time of mourning to have a wee dig.

    What`s ironical about that?
