Relax and you’re finished, Belfast awash with Seville spirit

655

The day after the opening Champions League qualifier of the season can get a bit tasty on the blog but business has been pedestrian since last night’s professional performance by the men in hoops.  If you wanted to be pushy, you could point to a couple of glimpses of goal which fell Cliftonville’s way as a result of Celtic defenders being dragged out of position, but that’s about the measure of an unfamiliar defence at any time.

Congratulations to Georgios Samaras, who scored in Celtic’s first five European away games last season and obliged again yesterday.  A remarkable record for a player who is never employed as a penalty box striker.

It would also be tardy not to congratulate Celtic and Cliftonville supporters on their exemplary behaviour throughout the day.  After recent disturbances in Belfast there were fears that a group of travelling Celtic supporters could find trouble in the city but the casual observer could be forgiven if he thought we were in Seville again.

Maybe Belfast council should invite us over every July to spread a bit of cheer. We do football very well, in all respects.

Neil Lennon can now kick back and relax with a formality of a second and the next round not for another…. 12 days!!  Maybe not.  12 days is not a lot of time to do anything in football, so every day, including match day against Cliftonville, will need to be meticulously planned to ensure we are ready to face an opponent who could well be midseason. Relax, and you’re finished in this business.

I don’t really follow the game too much here anymore. I used to go to a lot of the games before the ‘A’ league was formed but with the creation of the ‘A’ league, money, and what it could buy, became more important to the sport than clubs that had carried the game for years. I’ve been to one game since the ‘A’ league was formed. I think I’ll have a long nap before I go to another.

There are a lot of very talented youngsters here, though none that stick out. Some of the keepers catch your eye. Regards Tom Rogic, he did look a player on the big, sun soaked pitches you tend to get here. For me though, Marco Rojas was head and shoulders above him even though Rojas is only 5’ 6”. Celtic was reportedly in for him too, but I never saw anything official from the club on that and since he’s gone to Germany it is now moot. I suppose there is the opinion that he was too small of stature to make it with Celtic in the SPL.

Regards scouting, I’ve no doubt that Celtic have a presence here but the Rangers brand seems to be more promoted, even now. Actually when I think about it, I can’t remember seeing, or hearing, of any Celtic endorsed initiatives. Give them their dues though, they seem to be very active in the States, Ireland and India, from what I’ve read and the budget for scouting will be stretched.

What makes the Australians – pro-rata – so successful at sport? You’ve got to appreciate the status attached to sport in this country and the extents that some parents will go to accommodate their childrens dreams. There is also an abundance of sporting facilities readily available for use and the weather is also very kind more often than not. One of the biggest reasons kids appear to do so well at sport is diet, they eat a lot more fruit and veg than the kids back home and they are encouraged to do so at every level too. What I have noticed of late is that more and more kids are spending more time in the shade with their ipads.

What I find lacking here though is their coaching methods. There are a lot of good coaches but not enough to satisfy the number of kids who want to play and the slack is often taken up by some rather interesting, but disturbing, parents who bought the book but forgot the point was to read it. I know it’s not true but I get the impression some of those coaches think a prerequisite to teaching is to plonk the most outrageous numpty hat, money can buy, on your dome and the ability to out point Peter whilst performing the dying swan will elevate you, in the eyes of others, to the level of Alex Ferguson.

I think the education kids used to get on the streets of Glasgow, as Favourite Uncle talks about with the Calton, turned out a much cuter and hardy player than you’ll find down here. I don’t know if the kids still play in the street of Glasgow anymore or whether ipads have polluted their minds too.

Three guys go to see a witch doctor about their problems.

One has a smoking problem, one is an alcoholic, and one is gay but wants to change.

The doctor puts a curse on them that if any of them indulge their habits again they will die.

Two days later the alcoholic dies because he gave in and had to drink.

The next day the gay guy and the smoker are walking down the street together. The smoker sees a cigarette lying on the ground and stops to stare at it.

The gay guy looked at him and says, “If you bend over and pick that up we are both f^&*^.”

Stopped many, many, times. It is always so easy to stop but it is even easier to start again! Having smoked for nearly 35 years I did ‘Cold Turkey’

The ones I found the hardest were after/with coffee in the morning, after a meal and when having a beer. I cut out the coffee for a couple of days and it helped. The beers were easy as not allowed to smoke in bars and none of my mates were smoking.

The biggest other aid was brushing my teeth and mouthwash, whenever I felt like a smoke. It works wonders. I don’t know who told me about this but it is the best kept secret to stopping.

The other big encouragement to stopping is having an incentive. It could be children, family, financial or a bet,but should be something you would really need to think twice before lighting that cigarette.

When you do stop tell all your family and friends, that way you will be encouraged not to smoke in front of them.

We still need a reliable penalty box striker, one who can compete at a European level.

Stokesy will score goals domestically, but will often struggle against superior opposition.

Balde is not a goalscorer, and it’s a big ask for Tony Watt(goal against Barca notwithstanding) and young Atajic to consistently step up to the mark at this stage of their careers. Their time will come.

Just heard thunder in the distance!

On what evidence are you basing your verdict on Balde. He scored 17 times in the Portugese league last year..Another mouth with no thought behind it.For gods sake, even Lenny said he is work in progress.

  23. In response to the commission’s decision, the Orange Order said: “This decision by the Parades Commission to prevent this dignified parade is a further indictment of this already discredited body.

“Amid the obvious anger which has manifested itself over recent days, to which the commission must bear full responsibility, ….”

No. Individuals are responsible for their own actions. Anyone who incites violence or participates in violent action is fully responsible for their own actions.

Nothing any commission decides forces individuals to prepare and throw petrol bombs or other projectiles.

And that is a key point, petrol bombs are prepared with full intent of harming others. That is not a spontaneous act. It is premeditated assault.

The OO is in fact more accountable for the violence than any other group. It’s actions are feeding the mindset of violence of those who are filled with hatred of Catholics.

Making statements calling for calm are a pathetic attempt to wash their hands of responsibility.

The OO must face a straight choice, do you want peace for the people in NI or do you want to maintain your ‘traditions’?

    It is one or other.

Your so-called traditions are sectarian. You know they are an insult to the Catholic community and that insult is in fact the main reason for marching.

If the objective of marching was solely to recognise and celebrate an historic event, an event only the Protestant community wish to celebrate, then why the desire to march through Catholic areas? What purpose does that serve?

The answer is that the OO insist on sticking two fingers up to every Catholic in NI (and throughout the world) and insist on doing so right in their faces. It is that mentality which is the foundation of the violence.

I ask again, do you want peace for the people of NI?

Every time the OO parades, it is increasing the likelihood of returning to the bad-old days of daily bombings and shootings.

Peace or ‘traditions’. A straight choice.
