Result gives platform for progress

1761

Last night’s win didn’t look on the cards until the opening goal; Astra were passing the ball better and creating as many chances as Celtic.  It looked like the game we expected – without Commons or Guidetti. However, we find ourselves top of the group with 7 points from 9 at the halfway point, having recorded a draw away to top seed Salzburg.

There’s still a lot of work to do, a win away at Astra next time out in no way guarantees qualification, but we stand an excellent chance of progressing and a decent chance of topping the group.

Having thumped Ross County at the weekend there was a notion we’d turned a corner, which fed some of the frustration last night, despite the result.  What we saw was very poor passing from a disjointed team.  Players were receiving the ball in too little space, where options were already closed.  This impacted the effectiveness on Callum McGregor and Mikael Lustig in particular, but it seemed when every Celtic player looked up there wasn’t a good pass on.

This is all a consequence of change.  We look disjointed because we are disjointed.  We’re disjointed because we’re rebuilding.

The relevant questions are:

Do we need to rebuild?
Are we making progress?

Yes, we need to rebuild.  The squad, tactics, training and other processes are all going through change.  For so long we watched Celtic squads remain constant and grow old (under Martin O’Neill), or out tactics become rigid (under Martin and Gordon Strachan), to the point that we were crying out for some experimentation.

The above is seldom disputed but the question of progress is more important.  Right now Celtic need results.  They need to survive in the Europa League long enough to test and improve their passing, movement, instincts and, where necessary, squad.

Last night’s win wasn’t pretty but it was vitally important.  The next challenge for this team is also important; we need to go to Romania and put on the kind of performance we did in Salzburg.  If we can do that, we’ll have earned a platform to build on.

Caesar & the Assassin, the accounts of Billy McNeill and Davie Hay as Celtic managers, is available below.

Billy and Davie will both sign the early orders we get to them, more here.

My most important research was to get out the papers for 26 May 1967 but they had all been vandalised for some inexplicable reason.

The match reports from May 26th were already gone.

Can you still get the old papers out?

    Folks,

Tomorrow as you approach the game, you will see tables at which there will be volunteers who will ask that you sign a petition to support the motion asking that Celtic pay the living wage to their own direct employees.

Now, as I understand it, the board are going to ask shareholders to vote against this motion because, they, the board, believe that by agreeing to the motion at the AGM, the board would lose control of remuneration decisions as a whole.

In my humble opinion, this stance is nonsense.

The board delegate remuneration to a remuneration committee who then determine remuneration overall – or at least recommend specific remuneration to the board.

That advice is often if not always accepted.

All Celtic need to do with this motion is to effectively endorse it in open session and if necessary the board can refer the whole issue to the remuneration committee to see if adopting the living wage is possible ( and why would it not be ) and when it would be suitable to adopt the policy and put it into practice- pragmatically and sensibly in line with the business year etc.

Such a move would help bind the PLC to the general fan base, would encourage greater spending on official merchandise as the fans would know that the money has to be there to meet such a social objective, and generally enhance the social standing of the club.

    But the board say “No”!

So — please take some time to sign the petition and let the board members know that this is a matter which the ordinary shareholder feels strongly about.

The right to work for a decent wage is fundamental and our football club should lead by example.

It doesn’t mean that we will get to determine the extent of an executive bonus, though maybe we should, but we should be listened to when we say that we want our club to act decently and with dignity in recognising the dignity and value of the working man and woman.

It was a fine night and good to catch up. Not seen Johnny Bhoy for ages as well!

Got home and poured a wee nightcap and then snoozed for 2 hrs before clattering around and disturbing Mrs CRC. Head remarkably well! I ducked when she tried to thump me :-)

Next night is Nov 22nd, when Prestonpans Bhoy is on a Glesga jolly! Out after the game.

Now if you played CQN 5s there is an extra nite as well :-)

  11. “The board delegate remuneration to a remuneration committee who then determine remuneration overall – or at least recommend specific remuneration to the board”

As you can see “renumeration” can be a powerful figure on the scrabble board.

We have the great pleasure of the company of a South African opera singer for a few days who is doing her Masters at the Conservatoire. She is a friend of Kimi Skota and rates her very highly but we are having the Populist/Purist debate about Andre.

She is a purist so does not buy the kitsch around his shows but she rates all the performers highly. She sees Kimi as selling out.

We have another South African opera singer arriving in a couple of weeks to stay with us. He has come from a very poor township and has already appeared on the London stage as well as many other places so we are looking forward to his visit also.

    Culture jump for me.

The Mitchell Web site refers to the collection of newspapers so I think that they are still available.
