Scotland, consolable in defeat

I want Scotland to win at pretty much anything.  For me (fourth generation), this is my home and my country.  I also want Celtic players to be successful.  But the engagement with tonight’s qualifier against Serbia is not there.  If I’m really honest, my biggest wish is for Callum McGregor to have a midweek off.

Memories of the 1998 World Cup do not help.  Celtic contributed more players to that tournament than any other club in world football.  We paid a price the following season as exhaustion took its toll.  Do I really want Celtic players on international duty in throughout the summer, before another tortuous European qualification campaign?  Do you?  No need to pull that plaster off yet.

My country’s position on the international stage has always been viewed through pragmatism.  Will it hurt the poor, or the soon-to-be-poor (hmmm)?  Will it hurt what I really care about, like Celtic?

So good luck to them tonight, but if we are beaten by the better team, I will be consolable.

    Better paint your face with woad and wear some anachronous Scottish garb from a Walter Scott meets Brigaddon fantasy, if you want to pass muster here.

    Just watching the end of Sink the Bismarck on film 4 – my dad took me and my brother to see it when it first came out in 1960 – think it was at the Tivoli in Partick – memories

    I would pick us doing the ten over anything Scotland could do.Even winning the World Cup wouldn’t change my choice.Not that I’m bitter you understand.

     

    I wish Scotland all the best tonight.But I’m more interested in our players returning fit and healthy from all their national teams

    So, I’ve just switched on to watch the Scotland match, only because I’m interested in how our Celtic Bhoys get on. I lost interest in Scotland and FTSFA a long time ago.

     

     

    I can’t get over how unbelievably twee and condescending Sky’s ‘Tartan & Shortbread’ coverage is…

    Watched it a few times.

     

     

    The Hun had some magnificent war ships.

     

     

    Bismark, Graf Spey, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Tirpitz, for example.

     

     

    Loved the way the Allies hunted them down.

    My comment was less about those two Scottish stalwarts/hero’s Sir Jackie Stewart and Doddie Weir, and much more about Sky’s condescending coverage and portrayal of Scotland. 😊
