Social Values headline Celtic AGM

1105

Our Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park this morning, was a more prosaic affair than last year’s.  Chief executive, Peter Lawwell, told the meeting last season’s on-field and financial results were “fantastic” in difficult circumstances.

He repeatedly referred to the “balance” required between immediate expenditure policies and judging the long-term requirements of the club, adding that in recent years, “Rangers went bust, Hearts went bust, and Hibs were relegated.”

For the first time the AGM heard from the Celtic FC Foundation chief executive.  Tony Hamilton was given a video slot alongside the chairman, chief exec and the manager and he spoke about how the Foundation was interwoven into the fabric of the club, from the top to bottom, and of our history.

The alleviation of poverty is a major target for 2015, building on work the Foundation carried out this year in north and east Glasgow, Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire.  Tony added, “If things weren’t tough we wouldn’t need a charity – but they are.

“We’re deadly serious about making a difference.” I’ll try to get the video, it’s worth watching.

Ronny Deila laid out his objectives for this season: qualification for the Champions League, win the treble, develop players and play attacking, attractive, football.  Peter Lawwell didn’t want to use the managerial transition over the summer as an excuse for failing to reach the Champions League, but suggested it was grounds for mitigation.

The chairman, chief executive and manager all liberally infused their comments with transformational effect Champions League qualification would have on the club next season.

The Celtic Trust proposed two resolutions, the first of which, concerning club-fan interaction, they agreed to adjourn.  In his video message, chairman Ian Bankier informed the meeting that the directors would oppose the Living Wage resolution, but that they had entered into discussions with the staff on the matter, proposing that the starting pay for permanent staff is set at £7.85 per hour, which just happens to be equal to the Living Wage.

In response to this Jeanette Findlay, proposing the resolution on behalf of the Trust, reached the microphone and tore up her prepared speech.  She did, however, urge the club to go the final mile and become an accredited Living Wage employer.

Peter Lawwell informed the meeting that he would be meeting John Guidetti’s agent within the next two weeks and that he is waiting to hear back from Kris Commons representatives on his latest offer.

Ronny Deila added that it was important for the club to retain its top players, giving Guidetti and Justin Denayer special mention, but insisted it was wrong to give into demands from any one player three times the going rate for other senior players.

Another interesting Hun wind up at the end of the ETims article…Hearts certificate for exiting Administration. Dates, signatures and everything.Ask the Huns where is theirs!!!

Just while I’m on a rant…….. Seriously pissed off with Suttons carping. Loved him as a player, (apart from when he threw the towel in on Black Sunday), loved how he called it as it was re The Pars capitulation to the Deady Bears but now taking issue with celebrating a 92nd minute goal in what is our toughest away fixture. Sutton gtf.

He’s going to need some size of a jar for all of the 30 pieces of silver due for collection.

Also somebody in the Media has to recognise that a niche market exists for an ex Celt who is actually going to praise our team. Get your warm up started Tom Boyd.

They remind of my first days at work as an apprentice. A foreman bawled at me ‘Stoap laughin son, yer here tae work!’ ( I’d commited the crime of laughing at a guy’s funny story).

That was 1972, but may as well have been 1872 in some cotton mill iin deepest dourist presbyterian Scotlandshire.

And anyway, I thought it was Scandinavians who ‘didnt smile much’ or share our ‘sense of humour’.

You have not stepped back as far as I have to see progress.

It’s not a question of giving credit it’s a question of are we seeing a change?

If yes that is something to welcome surely regardless of reasons of which positive persuasion for change has been one.

    Good Morning.

Most importantly Frantic 07 I hope everything good for you and yours in the days to come and that your spirits are cheered by the high regard in which you are held.

Secondly — great credit goes to Lionsroar 67 and Bobby Murdoch’s Ankle and all the others involved in the Greenock CSC as they have a fantastic club and have great people down there. A real credit to themselves first and the name of Celtic second.

    Third

I was working at the AGM yesterday.

By that I mean I sat there and conducted other business for other people via my phone as I listened and witnessed all that took place.

Some of what I was doing wa in relation to last year’s Res 12 more of which later maybe.

However, I was struck by the fact that like all AGM’s the whole thing is no more than a pantomime.

I have been to many AGM’s of private and public companies and to be honest I am not and will not be in a hurry to go to another one.

No work is done at an AGM, nor is it the place to kick of any serious business plan or start any business strategy or policy.

It is a product of an act of parliament which says that a company has to meet once per year so as not to be simply a sham. However, most AGM’s are exactly that — a sham– and to be honest the Celtic AGM is no different.

I doubt I will attend another one unless I have a specific reason for attending as I am not a fan of the PLC structure and as i say no business is done there.

If I want to know about anything I can contact people during the course of the year and simply ask them about this or that, or even suggest this or that. That is how you do business with a company.

The whole purpose of the AGM for me is that there is a mechanism whereby shareholders can force the board to look at certain matters by passing a resolution provided they have a certain amount of support. However, you can do this at any time– not just at an AGM.

The AGM only becomes significant if you find that those who run the club don’t meet at any other time during the year or to be honest don’t respond to the concerns of the individual shareholders during the normal working week.

Also, as I sat there I though ” What a boring looking bunch of grey suited men!”

    No women on the board.

    Nobody under 35

No experts on IT or maybe marketing or whatever — just men who are of a certain background, certain professions, certain contacts and so on.

Now I recognise that these guys may well all have good intentions and relevant experience in various sectors but they reminded me too much of ……. well …. me!

Yes that is a criticism and a valid one I think.

In running any company the size and nature of Celtic there has to be men (and women) with professional expertise and experience – I get that.

But there also has to be a progressive spark and in all truth I just don’t see it — other than perhaps our manager who certainly talks a progressive game.

Beyond that, there is no point to going to an AGM to listen to the Company Secretary read out a vast number of proxy votes ( even he finds that boring ) and a whole load of self congratulatory and self penned or directed hoo-ha.

So — I won’t be there in future.

The highlight of the day to be honest was having my lunch in the Blane Valley with a few good friends from CQN some of whom I do not see often enough and having a long chat with Eddie Toner and others who joined our company.

That is a far better day out and far more enlightening than attending the AGM which to be frank was just a stautory exercise in corporal bollox.

It is disappointing. Ultimately WGS is a careerist and he was always good for a quote.

Could be an interesting encounter today, I hope we are up for it early. Paul Hartley certainly has something about him, he’s impressed at Alloa and so far at Dundee, people in the game will be watching his progress closely, could he be a future Celtic Manager?

I was going to say hello, but I was far too interested reading his emails.
