SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

We’re in the lull before the storm, the next two weeks will be the most notorious in the history of Scottish Football.

  6. The smoke and mirrors of the Div1 debate is to ensure that they get into Div3, the authorities were and still are totally shocked and rocked at what happened to their SPL plan that they are now going to make sure that SFL1 fans make the same decision as the SPL fans did, so as to say ok then it has to be Div3, but, that is still not how the rules should be applied, and they know it. por cierto

    Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to you to express my deep concern over current events in Scottish football. You will no doubt be aware of the recent liquidation of Glasgow Rangers following 12 months of not paying any taxes. This was preceded by at least ten years of tax dodging and alleged dual contracts to players making them illegible to play in Scottish and European games.

The response to this from the Scottish Football authorities has been to suspend investigations into the club and, initially, to mount a campaign to have the new company parachuted back into the Scottish Premier league. Following huge protests by fans the SPL clubs look likely to reject this proposal despite the enthusiastic endorsement of the SPL Chief Executive to this plan. This men’s that the new company will have to apply to the Scottish Football League.

The response of the authorities to this has been to produce a proposal to restructure the game so that the new company can enter into SFL league 1 rather than league 3. So the reward to a club for cheating on an industrial level for at least. Decade is one seasons demotion to one league. What is even more worrying is that the proposal threatens clubs saying that if they don’t agree then an SPL 2 will be formed which dissenting clubs won’t be part of.

Fans across Scotland are outraged by this blatant gerrymandering of Scottish football for the benefit of one club who have cheated the game at home, and in Europe, for many years. Many fans are likely to leave the game that they have loved with catastrophic consequences for the game. Fans are also suspicious that the President of the SFA, Campbell Ogilvie, was Company Secretary of Rangers during much of this time and was a beneficiary of the tax scheme under investigation.

I have been a huge fan of Scottish football for over five decades and am distressed by the actions of the football authorities which seem to have placed the well being of one, disgraced, club above sporting integrity and financial fair play. I would ask that UEFA look at this situation as a matter of urgency before football ceases to be a professional sport in a country with a long and proud tradition.

I look forward to receiving your reply.

    Many thanks

  8. McMillan’s statement, appearing to do the noble thing of agreeing to send Pestilence FC into Div 3 is in fact a veiled threat.

He and many like him want the whole of Scottish football to die because Pestilence FC aren’t there to guide the top flight.

    Farcical.

Pestilence FC in Div 3 will be the worst thing ever to happen to Div 3. The clubs down there will see MIB favouring them time & time again.

Mind you, this is only IF Pestilence FC manage to survive that long.

John Brown has for me thrown down the goblet. And it’s a poisoned goblet, no mistake. The club that I played against is going to be liquidised and that has sent soundwaves across Scottish football. In retrospect no-one could have had the foresight in future to have seen it not coming. The big-spending of the Murray era is well and truly over and out and while some have blamed him and others, as well as him, this problem goes deeper. It is a problem for Scottish football clubs in Scotland and throughout the nation, but particularly in Scotland for Scottish clubs in Scotland. What we need is what everyone needs – and that’s league deconstruction and the construction has to be reconstructed now. Not tomorrow, but now. Chairmen, and women chairs, have to get their heads stuck together and tell us what’s being proposaled. Otherwise or else this is not going to be the change that Scottish football in Scotland needs. When was the last time, apart from producing Kenny Dalglish, that we produced another Kenny Dalglish? When was the last time we qualified for Europe, or anything in Europe without or with Kenny Dalglish? As I said to my pal Charlie last night (not me, a guy called Charlie I know), when will we be good enough to be better than what we are just now which is not good, but needs to be better? I fear for our position in global world football, and I fear for the very future, at some time in the future if not now, then sometime in the future. So I am glad we have people like John Brown willing to speak up and stand up and speak. Because this is a problem like no other problem and that problem is financial, moneywise, and it is how we play the game of football and it is league set-up and reconstruction and how the leagues are constructed and it is, weather-wise, and in the weather we have to construct our league to have a reconstruction and a winter break in the winter now just not but in the winter and also the moneywise problem. Otherwise, as I say, I fear for the future of our game. That game is football, in the future and it is football now, but it might not be.

Yes, heard about him being ineligible for the euros, don’t know why to be quite honest, but I’m glad he’s building up his fitness. As a crucial part of the Celtic team, I expect him to at least reach the quarter finals to show he’s still got it

I did ask about the film as I have been reading the 1st (of three) book, I was wondering whether to watch the film or wait until I’ve read the books, I normally find a decent book to be better as you get more detail etc and often the film misses out much of the “sense of being there or part of the story” if you know whit I mean.
