Strict liability when playing to gallery

2207

Being responsible is not always easy, especially when it comes to running a football club, where playing to the gallery offers vastly better short-term returns, and no doubt a rush of endorphins.

If your fans are engaged in an activity which regularly brings them to the attention of the courts, and your club into disrepute, it doesn’t matter what you think of the apparent offense.  You may chant an offending song in the shower every morning month, but your only public comment on the matter can be to chastise and urge fans to desist.

Clubs in Scotland voted against what is known as strict liability.  This means they are not held responsible for transgressions by their fans – and who wants to be held responsible for the actions of others who protected from personal liability by hiding in a crowd.

Part of the deal on not having strict liability is that clubs must demonstrate that they take all steps necessary to dissuade and educate their fans from carrying out criminal or regulatory offenses.  It’s simply not possible for club to tell fans their illegal actions were justified, as this would place the club itself in the firing line.

The nonsense following the Scottish Cup final is all background noise as far as we are concerned, but be aware the contagion will spread beyond those you could consider highly dysfunctional operators.

Solving Kids Cancer in memory of Oscar Knox

Our own Bundoran Bhoy will run the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday on behalf of Solving Kids Cancer.  He has put in an enormous amount of work ahead of the event, for a cause which you are only too familiar with.

26 miles is a long way to run.  You can give him some encouragement on his Just Giving page.

Good luck, Tommy.

Gerry, I’m good pal. Aye, I was fortunate that night that you guys were all non drammers, I was clinking all the way back to sipsini’s gaff then we necked the lot wi his young crew.

Renewed my ticket yesterday. I wasn’t going to but couldn’t help myself. Mrs ACGR was, how shall I put it, less than pleased. Nothing to do with Brendan Rodgers, I just found out that Coia’s has been refurbished for the new season:_)

Fenian.I like the sound of the word itself;feen-yin.

Apart from that I have no problem with it.There’s only two scenarios i’m ever referred to as a ‘fenian’:

    1) as a term of endearment from one of my fellow ‘fenians’ or

    2) with threatening bile from a hun.

The huns use fenian to cover everyone catholic/Celtic/Irish and/or anyone who doesn’t agree with their regressive consciousness.

I like when they refer to me as ‘fenian’ as they believe it describes someone completely opposite to them. And if that’s a fenian then count me in.

Re. My post “second life” = “second leg”. I’ve been correcting my posts quite a lot tonight :-(( My apologies.

Have to disagree about Simeone’s behaviour being pallid compared to Pepe and Bale tonight. They may have dived and simulated which you will see in most games to some extent or other but Simeone tried to threaten and intimidate a 17 year ok’d in a Champions League Cup Final. He actually challenged him to fight. I know you have a thing about body language but revisit the 2014 Champions League Cup Final and tell me that Simeone wasn’t challenging the young Real Madrid player to fight. A thug in thug’s clothing.

No problem whatsoever. Really glad you took the time to reply. I’m absolutely certain every Celtic supporter will be 100% behind Brendan. I’m like a dog with two tails at the moment. When I was younger, I would have sung the suggested song for sure but I’m an old grey beard now and I think it would be a bit of an own goal. I know some guys who are mad Celtic supporters but who don’t come from the same background as me. I would be happier if they continued to support Celtic than fell away because of some chanting which made them feel uncomfortable.

I remember a post on here from Hebcelt, a Celt from Lewis. If I remember it correctly, he said about a third of the island (which is not renowned for having many Catholics) are Celtic supporters. I’m fairly sure he said that they considered themselves to be Celts, rather than Tims. That’s good enough for me. I want Celtic to be the best supported team in Scotland with supporters from all backgrounds to emphasise the fact that we are an inclusive club. While many of us who support the club are Fenians, in my view, it’s not a necessary prerequisite for being a Celtic supporter. Nor do I need to ram it down anyone else’s throat. If, however, supporters of other clubs call me a Fenian based on my support of Celtic, I will deal with that in an appropriate manner.

    Hail! Hail!

I have no doubt Simeone is a thug and that he tried to intimidate a young player- not classy at all- but a world of difference between that and 1974

Also still find needle and abuse and intimidation have long been part of the game and well practised by some of our heroes. I can’t think of a Celt who fell down and rolled around in agony because someones fingers touched their face (Pepe) or played best fallers (Bale) .

5 years ago we lost narrowly at home to an Atletico side containing Courtois, Godin, Juanfran, Luis Filipe, Arda Turan and Gabi.

It was one of those Celtic teams dismissed as the worst ever and a product of downsizing, containing as it did, Majstorovic, Loovens, Ki, Stokes and Forrest (with Bangura, McCourt and Twardzik as bench options.

    Original Sadies Bhoy et al,

In the Sevco lexicon, all supporters of Glasgow Celtic (IMO) are, Papes, Fenians, Tarriers, Timmies etc, etc.

In respect of Fenian, the individual’s religion makes no difference. Many senior Catholic clerics oppossed it’s early development in the 19th century. Sevconians use the term in a derogatory sense, with no understanding of what it actually means. They seem to think it’s only about Irish Catholics, they don’t have a clue.
