Tensions and preparations ahead of first big test

512

As Ronny Deila chose to leave first team players to their training duties, instead taking a fringe squad for Saturday’s friendly against St Pauli, Norwegian compatriot, Henning Berg, had a league game in Cracow, which Legia won comfortably.

Playing games is the best way to improve fitness but two games per week comes at a cost, fitness metrics are never as high ahead of the second game as they would be if pre-match preparation was a week long.  With a day already lost to travel, Ronny clearly decided the players needed preparatory work for Warsaw more than the disruption caused by the pre-match-day preparation for St Pauli, the game itself, then post-match rest-day brought about by Saturday’s match.

Henning Berg rested most of his first team ahead of their second leg against St Pat’s (resulting in a home defeat in the league), and, perhaps mindful of not showing too much of his hand to Celtic, rested four players on Saturday.  His team are also a couple of weeks’ training ahead of Celtic, which will be the major benefit Legia will hope to exploit.

While Celtic moaned about having to play three qualification rounds I’m sure Ronny will be happy he saw his team in competitive action against KR ahead of tonight’s game.  There was enough about the first half in Iceland two weeks ago to remind him that an edge is needed, and it is not straightforward to find, even against such lowly opposition.

While Celtic progressed to the group stage in each of the last two seasons, the corresponding fixture to tonight caused some concern on both occasions.  HJK Helsinki were eventually overcome 2-1 after taking a lead at Celtic Park two years ago, while we took an equally narrow 1-0 to Elfsborg last season.  Celtic would go on to produce memorable and record breaking seasons, but the preparation gradient has proven to be steep.

Celtic’s major advantage could, conversely, be the partisan home crowd, who are sure to be switched on from kick off, but Berg’s team have not won any of their three home games this season.  The natives are getting restless and could easily become frustrated, increasing the tension already evident on Legia.  The first goal could be crucial.

No passengers tonight, Celtic, especially late in the game, when limbs tire.

If PL wanted rid of a player, he would accept any offers for him or let his contract run down without offering a renewal. Chasing a player away by offering a reduced contract is risky as he might just decide to sign it.

The talk of Commons possibly being offered a new contract on reduced terms has been going on for a couple of weeks now. My comment was not simply prompted by your post today.

As for the infinite number of returns on the page, yip, only happens when the magazine is linked in the lead article.

I pinged Paul about it a few weeks ago and expect it’ll be sorted when the new site launches.

Winningcaptains: As above with Awe Naw, the site malfunctions on android devices when there is a link to one of the magazines – which is most days.

Essentially, you get an infinite number of returns below the lead article and above the comments, such that you can never get to the comments. Quite a nuisance. Would be obliged if you’d pull the magazine punts for the time being, or place them in the banner ads instead.

Tom McLaughlin. I certainly hope Commons gets a new contract but like others I am puzzled why he doesnt have it sorted out.Commons I believe is at an age that if he signs a 3 year deal at the end of it he will have very little transfer value so it is not surprising there is speculation as we sold Ledley who said he wanted to stay we freed Sammi who said he wanted to stay and as a club we seem to value the money more than we value the player. Now maybe that is not the case but it feels like that to many Celtic fans.H.H.

  10. The only way Biton, or Kayal will start… is if Mulgrew needs to replace one of our centre halfs…. Other than that, i’m sure the sitting centre mids will be his team captain for the night, and Johansen.

I thinks its the wide left, wide right, and central striker roles that are up for question… Commons will definately play number 10 role behind either Stokes or Pukki.

Griffiths more than likely wide right….. C.McGregor or Boerrigter will be wide left.

The new Norwegian may come in, as a suprise in one of the wide area’s left or right..

I’ve seen you write that a couple of times now, and respectfully, it’s untrue.

Roberston was released by Celtic at the end of his Under 15 season.

    He’s now 20.

I know your arithmetic isn’t that bad.

FYI, he spent the next couple of years playing with the school before joining Queens Park development team at 17.

Paul67 if you want to continue targeting the mobile phone user then you need to get up to speed on a few things.

Anyone buying a new Android phone or possibly even new Iphones are going to have problems with Adobe Flash player. As support for it has been dropped.

On September 10 2013, Adobe released Flash Player 11.1.111.73 for Android 2.x and 3.x and 11.1.115.81 for Android 4.0.x in keeping with statements made in Adobe’s publicly available Flash Roadmap. This release is the final update release of Flash Player for the Android operating system. While it is not recommended, if you would like to download this release for previous Android releases, see the links below:

If you get a new android 4.4 then you will need to use the dolphin browser along with the Adobe Flash player 11.1 or it is not going to work. With Chrome, Firefox or the standard browser. I will speculate that you will have the same problems with new Iphones

I’m not sure on the feasibility but wouldn’t an ignore/mute function/button be a welcome addition to limit against the schizophrenic multi accounters, zombie infiltrators & nob-ends?

  21. Had a quick chuckle as I completed the Celtic fan survey. They offered 14, yes fourteen possible reasons when asking why you did not attend a home league game.

Amazingly the cost of a match day ticket was not one of the choices offered!

Are they really so far out of touch or is this just a nonsense we’re listening survey like the southsiders we recently ridiculed?

In the free format piece for other reasons I mention police and steward harassment as the one issue the club had to address.

Suspect my input now safely thrown in the bin.

    Got to disagree.

Various aspects of the opening ceremony have been criticised by various groups.

Some on the Christian Right objected to the Gay Kiss section.

Some of the cultural cringe, unco’ guid objected to the send up of Tartan kitsch

Now some Islamic fundamentalists object to Scottie dogs.

Why bother to reply to them. Are they that important? Neither the Malay parliament nor the Malaysian CG Federation have raised any objection and athletes and officials from that nation have been spotted in and around Glasgow, enjoying what we have going on here just now.

As we know, there are far worse things going on in the world of fundamentalism without getting upset by their attitude towards Scotties during or outwith Ramadan.

Glad to have you back in the land of the free-possibly!

Your assertion that Celtic would never offer a reduced contract is wrong. And it’s not a new thing.

I doubt Samaras was offered anywhere near his previous, neither was Ledley.

    Brown will doubtless be next.

Every contract signed by Neil Lennon when he played for us was less than the previous one. And I doubt he is the only one.

I think you are maybe going back to pre-Bosman days when a contract had to at least match the previous one, otherwise the player was legally a free agent.

Some good stuff (Unicef and the sparkle in the eyes of the athletes as they entered)

Some risible “Scottish” stuff…with a high cringe factor.

    But what about Gordon Mathieson…?

Had he been mainlining Red Bull or whit. His eyes were yon “scary stary” while he nearly jumped over the podium with every phrase. Mrs RWE just burst out laughing when he was speaking – saying…who is that eejit?

He’s had years to practice…but he still thought it was a good idea to SHOUT at his audience. Highest cringe factor by a country mile.
