Tensions and preparations ahead of first big test

512

As Ronny Deila chose to leave first team players to their training duties, instead taking a fringe squad for Saturday’s friendly against St Pauli, Norwegian compatriot, Henning Berg, had a league game in Cracow, which Legia won comfortably.

Playing games is the best way to improve fitness but two games per week comes at a cost, fitness metrics are never as high ahead of the second game as they would be if pre-match preparation was a week long.  With a day already lost to travel, Ronny clearly decided the players needed preparatory work for Warsaw more than the disruption caused by the pre-match-day preparation for St Pauli, the game itself, then post-match rest-day brought about by Saturday’s match.

Henning Berg rested most of his first team ahead of their second leg against St Pat’s (resulting in a home defeat in the league), and, perhaps mindful of not showing too much of his hand to Celtic, rested four players on Saturday.  His team are also a couple of weeks’ training ahead of Celtic, which will be the major benefit Legia will hope to exploit.

While Celtic moaned about having to play three qualification rounds I’m sure Ronny will be happy he saw his team in competitive action against KR ahead of tonight’s game.  There was enough about the first half in Iceland two weeks ago to remind him that an edge is needed, and it is not straightforward to find, even against such lowly opposition.

While Celtic progressed to the group stage in each of the last two seasons, the corresponding fixture to tonight caused some concern on both occasions.  HJK Helsinki were eventually overcome 2-1 after taking a lead at Celtic Park two years ago, while we took an equally narrow 1-0 to Elfsborg last season.  Celtic would go on to produce memorable and record breaking seasons, but the preparation gradient has proven to be steep.

Celtic’s major advantage could, conversely, be the partisan home crowd, who are sure to be switched on from kick off, but Berg’s team have not won any of their three home games this season.  The natives are getting restless and could easily become frustrated, increasing the tension already evident on Legia.  The first goal could be crucial.

No passengers tonight, Celtic, especially late in the game, when limbs tire.

I suppose with Robertson we don’t know how these guys will survive in the top team because we can’t or won’t give them a run of games. He’s clearly got that at Dundee United, used the skills he had and learned very quickly under the guidance of his boss, himself a former full back great going forward, who believed in him.

We’re too busy trying to think outside the box we’re missing whats in the box around us…

Maybe the profit margin on these guys isn’t considered high enough but when they are young the sky is the limit, as James McCarthy’s subsequent move, and future rumoured moves, are proving.

    1st £100

    2nd £75

    3rd £50

Also if by some miracle I end up in the top 3, the winnings will be passed onto the next placed team.

  15. Celtic FC have never and will never offer a renewed contract to any Celtic player on wages that are lower than the expiring contract.

It was reported in the SMSM 6 months ago that Celtic had offered Samaras a renewed contract on reduced wages. CFC and PL were slaughtered on CQN for that. At the time I said it was nonsense and was called a board lacky, among other things.

After Samaras left, he revealed that he had not received a contract renewal offer of any sort from CFC. Not even on reduced terms.

There is no way Kris Commons would be offered a new contract on reduced terms.

He scored 32 goals last season and was Celtic’s and Scotland’s player of the year.

Just where is that nonsense coming from?

Really like Ronny’s philosophy and the way he has us playing on the front foot. Also excited to see how we will progress, but for now it’s a matter of are we currently ready to mix it with teams who possess decent quality themselves. Just hope Legia are not of sufficient quality to take full advantage of our open style of play. As being so attack minded may prove costly, especially if our passing isn’t consistent enough. Looking forward to the game tonight but also very nervous of the final result.

Hoping for an away goal or two.

Tom McLaughlin. It was a discussion on why Kris Commons has not yet received a new contract despite the player himself saying he wanted to stay. Everyone is aware how many goals he scored last season but if Leicster City make a fair offer there was no confidence from the posters that PL wouldnt sell the player.Maybe you know different? H.H.

Even though Steven House knows that police deployment is focused in the wrong geographical areas he still condones the sending of staff to Poland. How many police officers are going how much will it cost and what crime stats support the deployment?

Or will their prescience be justified via subsequent stats?

  26. I haven’t checked UEFA’s listings so I leave myself open to even further ridicule .

I think that Legia are a higher ranked team than Shaktar Karagandy.

If we lose by 2-0 goals tonight there will be many who say.

    We came back against Karagandy.

    We can do it again.

Legia are a much tougher task.

A loss by 2 goals will most likely see us out of the competition.

We should be looking to win this match .

I don’t expect us to, but I would like to see us park the bus and play on the counter attack.

Not sure who you are suggesting…. but if its Biton and Kayal, how much of Celtics pre-season have you taken in…. The midfield 5, that i’ve “guessed” happen to be the same 5 that played twice against the Icelanders….

The biggest debate for me, is Stokes or Pukki from the start…. apart from that, my “guess” at starting 11 won’t be too far away. The new Norwegian will be in the squad, i.e on the bench, but would be suprised if he started.

We are entering unknown territory tonight. Feels like Artmedia or lennys first games in Europe. I hope Deila plays it cagey. A pressing game is fine until you start conceding too much space behind you.

I’m with you Mad Mitch even if it takes me a while to decipher your code. Andrew Robertson must have been on scouts radar at QP. He’s a full international now as a result oh his time at united. He must have something but Scottish talent is few and far between. Our lads are too busy getting bizarre haircuts and tattoos to bother with improving.

  33. Joe Filippis Haircut on

ruggygman. What you say is correct however, both Kayal and Biton got match time and I think we need to be tighter in midfield than we have been. So both would be in my mid field.I think like you the new Bhoy will get some game time but I dont think he will start. H.H.
