Turning gold into mud tricky for English clubs

705

Owen Coyle has probably no idea the trouble caused in his name at Celtic.  Notions that his granny’s uncle’s cousin passed on verifiable information that either Owen rejected the Celtic job, or that he did so because he didn’t agree with the direction the club were going, were clearly nonsense at the time and are more evidently the case now.

Having just earned promotion to the English Premier League the man chose not to be interviewed for the Celtic position, a perfectly defendable decision.  He was never offered a job.  Coyle performed well at St Johnstone (without winning promotion) and did well at Burnley before managing an inevitable decline at Bolton.  He remains a good manager who I hope gets back into the game soon.

The Bolton lesson to football is stark.  On some levels the club was well run.  Good manager, good scouts, a small but faithful following, a chairman who could see the iceberg ahead, all signed up to the ambition to remain in top flight football, but their budget was forever under pressure.   Debts topped £100m, although the directors ensured public services didn’t suffer as a result of their ‘ambition’.

Three years ago Phil Gartside, the Bolton chairman, knew the model in the English game was unsustainable and tried to change things.  He failed, unfortunately, and was unable to produce a reverse alchemy – turning tens of millions of pounds from Sky TV each year into a 17th place finish in the Premier League.  I hope the change works for them.

Yeah me too but Kris is in a lose lose situation created by the idiotic press comments of Levein, even though I have little or no interest in Scotland or International football Levein irks the shizzle out of me, there’s nothing worse than a clueless eeeeejit on the job that thinks he’s good at what he does…

I think Levein has been really poor since he took over the Scotland job, in many ways.

His 4-6-0 tactics were lamentable and ultimately we got what we deserved in the game.

His man management defies belief. If he doesn’t fancy Commons as a player then that’s fine, he’s the manager so it’s his head that will be on the block.

What I can’t fathom is the stupidity in making a statement that suggests Kris is so far down the pecking order that you or I would get a game before him!

It would have been more prudent, and decent, to simply say that he was picking a squad that HE thought would be best suited to getting a result.

  6. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

I will always have a bit of respect for Levein after the Sinister Minister game in the midden even though he did buckle to the protection rackets charm offensive.

What happened to the decent Dundee Utd manager?

Chewed up n spat out by our notoriously conflicted national association, thats what.

  7. The Battered Bunnet on

Levein thus far has been a disappointment as manager of Scotland. He seems to have a natural inferiority complex that infects both his tactics and his relationships with the players.

All of which does nothing for those of us who still support the team.

As infuriating as I often found you I never ever doubted your love for the Club.

Glad to hear you’re back at CP and more glad still to report I’m getting to a few away games now, having only missed St Johnstone away in the league so far.

    Love Celtic and Neil Lennon.

  9. Hamiltontim

I watched that game and spent the whole 90 mins trying to figure out how he thought that tactic could work with those players.

Scotland doesn’t produce world class players any more, we used to regularly have players who could hold there own in any team, those days are gone and the reasons for that are many blog hours long I’m sure, that coupled with Dark Ages coaching and commentators and “experts” who glorify the “gie’s a boady school of thought leaves us with little or no chance of going to the Football Fiesta in Brazil..

  10. I don’t really expect it of him but Nevin would go a long way to redeeming himself in my eyes if he took the opportunity on national radio to tell his audience of the appalling song traducing Mr Stein that is a favourite of thon deid team’s “supporters”. He won’t, of course, little cretin that he is.

  11. Who said this yesterday,”It is a very thin line for the officials involved in Rankers fixtures”.

  12. FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce wants to stamp out the “cancer” of diving.

How many times have we been down this road recently?

  13. Surely Levein must have been doing summit right – as soon as he was heid-hunted by the SFA and pinched from Dundee Utd, without his management skills, they lost 7-1 to the huns in December 2009.

On making this statement I’m not taking into the account the influence of free-mibbery on that game – the pressure was lifted on the MIB with the removal of Levein.

Really hope Kris Commons tells him to stick it.

  14. Anyone know of a pub that shows Celtic games in Groningen or Assen (The Netherlands)? Just moved to Holland. Omens are good 1st apartment i looked at in Assen had 1916 written in huge letters on the roof (one sh**s you not). The local team Groningen play in green and white, 2 decent ‘Irish bars’ in the city but one doesn’t show games and the other Rugby (FFS). I have avoided renting an apartment in the ‘orange’ area – just couldn’t do it.

From an early press conference ———-

” It’s pretty evident from the way Barcelona and Spain are playing at the moment that that’s the way you’d want your team to play . They’re great to watch . It’s certainly the best football I’ve ever seen . If we are going to start with this blank sheet , then why not try to emulate the best ”

    Craig Levein..

Maybe Craig thinks Kris Commons isn’t good enough to play the Barca way ?

  17. South of Tunis

I never thought of it that way but it is certainly a possibility

The coming generation will simply not accept Keevins and Traynor like utterances so maybe young Kyle is the shape of things to come.

  22. Although it is not universally approved, I think it’s good to see Kris in the Scotland squad.

Couple reasons really, he should have been picked in the first place and was (like many a Celt before him) indefensibly left out.

Unlike many other Celts his Manager stuck up for him and righted this – ever thus – wrong.

Also as I posted t’uther day it’s important hat every aspect of Scottish Football excels in the absence of the ‘Aye Ready’ crewe, to do that we must play our best players at International level.

When he took over as Scotland Manger Craig Levein had many intransigent high minded ideals.

He now knows he is not a tactical genius after his 4-6-Zero

He now knows that you can’t run an International team like a club team – availability/attitude of players.

I hope he knows his my way or the highway man-management style doesn’t deliver and Kris Commons and Steven Fletcher start.

Levein is in the last chance saloon and Butch Commons and the Forrest Kid can get him out of it.

  23. The longest walk of my life was on the tarmac at airport in prague 2 years ago….Somehow I ended up with Craig Levein who was being savaged by all media, fans and sundry re 460 formation and losing 0-1…..The 100 metres to the plane seemed like an eternity…..as the silence was deafening…..in the end ‘Tough luck you nearly pulled off a miracle’ was as kind as I could be….

  24. Levein’s managent of both Fletcher and Commons has been abject. He doesn’t strike me as possessing the temperament to manage successful players and I think he will be gone soon.
