Unacceptable conduct’s interesting consequence

674

We had an interesting couple of announcements from the Scottish Premier League yesterday.  Safe Standing areas, where instead of a seat, spectators have a crush barrier in front of them, is no longer against league rules.  Before the introduction of standing areas council Health and Safety officials would need to give approval, as do the police.  Council approval should be straightforward, crush barriers separating each row of spectators make the environment safe, but I’m less sure the police will be keen.

Policing huge stadiums with seated spectators is straightforward compared to policing standing fans.  Disturbances tend to cause those involved to stand up, drawing immediate attention to the incident, while knowing exactly who is sitting on which seat would allow transgressors of the Scottish Governments new interpretation on making the sign of the cross to be pursued after the event.

League rules (note: not the law of the land) have also been updated to clarify the definition of “Unacceptable Conduct” as ‘using words, conduct or displaying any writing or other thing which indicates support for, or affiliation to, or celebration of, or opposition to an organisation proscribed in terms of  the Terrorism Act 2000’.

New rules on how clubs are expected to tackle Unacceptable Conduct, with fresh procedures, if necessary, have also been introduced.  Clubs are now required to bring occurrences of Unacceptable Conduct to the Match Commander.  Failure to do so will bring the club into breach, should an incident subsequently be reported, by TV spectators, for example.

Clubs are also charged to “Take reasonably practical steps, including consultation with police, to identify those who engage in Unacceptable Conduct”, which creates obvious dissonance with the new Safe Standing Area policy.

We’ll see how these rules work out in practice but look out for an interesting consequence.  Some Celtic fans are often cited as singing about the IRA (who are on the Proscribed list in their various historical formats) but they are not the supporters who sing most about that organisation(s).  That ‘honour’ falls to Rangers fans, who are bound not to sing in “opposition to an organisation proscribed”.

The notion that Rangers (and let’s not forget Hearts) are compelled to identify and sanction any of their supporters caught “effin’ the IRA” in fear any TV viewer reports them is what keeps this country unique.

Box clever.

Is “Celtic forever, Rangers in the river” offensive?

Probably depend on where the river is and the depth.

I suggest Celtic supporters only sing 80’s electro pop until this is clarified.

  7. Former Rangers midfielder Charlie Miller believes the club would be wise to re-sign striker Kris Boyd should their finances permit.

Boyd, a former Rangers favourite, has left Eskisehirspor seeking a return to British football after just five months in Turkey.

“I couldn’t see why they wouldn’t sign him back again,” Miller told BBC Scotland. “He’s a great goalscorer.

“We all know what he can do. It would be a good signing.”

Boyd, the Scottish Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer, left Ibrox for Middlesbrough in 2010 and then made the switch to Eskisehirspor.

However, he has not featured regularly in the Turkish league and Miller believes, if Rangers receive a decent bid for striker Nikica Jelavic during the January transfer window, it could pave the way for Boyd’s return.

“I don’t know what kind of situation Rangers are are in money-wise,” said Miller who has been in training for the new NASA expedition to mars.

“But it wouldn’t be a bad signing because it looks like possibly Jelavic is maybe probably on his way in January.

“If Rangers get a big offer for him, it’ll be difficult to turn down.” stated Miller who has no idea about Rangers present finances.

Several Scots-based players have made the move to foreign clubs in recent years and failed to settle – Derek Riordan’s spell in China and Garry O’Connor’s move to Russia – while other players have found no difficulties in establishing thmeselves abroad, such as Celtic youth product and current Irish International Aiden McGeady with Spartak Moscow.

Miller spent two seasons with Norwegian club Brann and a further two seasons with Lierse in Belgium after a successful spell in British football with Rangers, Watford and Dundee United before spending several years avoiding jail in Australia.

And he can sympathise with players who fail to make the move work.

“Going to Turkey and Russia is much more difficult than what I did,” said Miller.

“I went to Norway, where everyone spoke English – which makes it much easier – they were very welcoming.

“I think going to Turkey and Russia would be difficult, because it’s a big lifestyle change going to a place like Turkey or Moscow.

“Derek Riordan, Garry O’Connor and Kris Boyd have struggled because they haven’t played so well.

“With McGeady in Russia, he’s done really well and his team seem to be loving him and he’s interesting other clubs in Russia who want to sign him.

“It’s all about how good a player you really are and not how good fat has beens say youare”

  8. New Celtic date confirmed

    20.12.2011

Hearts’ rearranged Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash against Celtic will go ahead on Wednesday, February 8, kick-off 7.45pm.

The original fixture was scheduled for Saturday, January 28 but was postponed due to the Parkhead outfit’s involvement in the Communities League Cup semi-final that weekend

  9. Daniel Majstorovic out for six weeks

By: Laura Brannan on 20 Dec, 2011 13:04

DANIEL Majstorovic underwent surgery yesterday, (Monday), on the fractured cheekbone he suffered in the 2-0 win against St Johnstone on Sunday.

The central defender had to leave the field of play after a 50/50 challenge with David Robertson left both players injured. The operation went well, but he now faces six weeks on the sidelines before he can return to training.

Meanwhile, in other injury news, Joe Ledley, has returned to training and will be available for selection this weekend for the home match against Kilmarnock.

Anthony Stokes and Paddy McCourt, who both picked up slight calf strains, along with Adam Matthews, who suffered a twisted ankle, will return to training later this week. However, Saturday’s match is likely to come too early for the trio.

Kris Commons is set to resume training on Monday after overcoming a thigh strain. Glenn Loovens, who tweaked his right hamstring against Hearts 10 days ago, will also return to training later next week.

There is good news regarding Mark Wilson’s knee injury as the defender has progressed well since undergoing surgery earlier in the season. Medical staff have been impressed by his recovery and he will return to training in the first week of January.

  12. Bangura bags a brace as a Celtic XI beat Morton

By: Mark Henderson on 20 Dec, 2011 14:04

MO Bangura bagged brace as a Celtic XI beat Morton 3-1 in a bounce game at Lennoxtown on Tuesday afternoon.

The Sierra Leonean struck both his goals in the first half, with two close-range finishes before exiting the action shortly before the hour-mark.

David O’Brien replied for the visitors but the Hoops sealed the victory in the closing stages when Paul George headed home after Tony Watt´s effort had been beaten away.

It was a match which proved a useful exercise for the watching Neil Lennon, with Emilio Izaguirre and Kelvin Wilson both getting a full 90 minutes under their belts as they continued their recovery to full fitness following injury.

Bangura struck his first in the 22nd minute, finishing from close range from Izaguirre’s cutback.

Filip Twardzik had chance to double Celtic’s advantage shortly after, but fired wide after being supplied by Andre Blackman.

Minutes before half-time, Bangura doubled the hosts’ advantage, flicking home at the near post after good work from Paul George

Morton produced an instant response to reduce the deficit before the interval but Kelvin Wilson still had time to hit the bar before the half-time whistle sounded.

After the break, Celtic continued to creates plenty of chances and hit the woodwork twice through efforts from James Keatings and Tony Watt.

And their efforts were finally rewarded in the final 10 minutes as Watt´s low drive was saved by the keeper but headed into the net by George.

    jocky bhoy

JB: “We DO know that Celtic Symphony’s chorus is an issue (ironic that we’ve been told for years not to amend lyrics of songs but for that one we need to!)”

The Celtic Supporters have removed the offending lyric this season, some even argue before the initial UEFA charge . If you dispute this, I’d politely ask , when were you last at a game and heard the offending lyric, inside Celtic Park?

JB: “The problem is now that some have raised the stakes so high, by not heeding warnings from the club”

What unheeded warnings are you referring to precisely, and in what way have Celtic Supporters raised the stakes in terms of alleged illicit songs?

Bournessouprecipe: I do not dispute the offending lyrics have changed, hence why I wrote that we needed to amend those lyrics. I have sung the amended lyrics myself. The last game I attended was ICT in September btw. The point is the damage was done before that change.

We raised the stakes by going after the Huns for their songs, which was fair in that their songs are racist and sectarian, but that obviously stoked the “whataboutery”, and rather than be cute about it, our fanbase continued ignoring requests by our own team for certain songs not to be sung (as the team have requested for years).

Ask youself why now? Why are our songs being legislated against now. Sure (again as I posted previously) there is populist opportunism from the likes of Salmond to woo the anti-football vote as well as police union reps trying to justfiy their members’ overtime, but the increasing involvement of the judiciary with regard to songs upped the ante.

The fact that when the law couldn’t find against us as we hadn’t broken any, they simply changed the law to “even up” things (as stated by the Convener of the Justice Committee (sic)) shows what lengths the establishment would go to to get back at Timmy.

I think we could have avoided (or minimised) the current witchhunt against us if we’d be a little smarter an little earlier, all only IMO of course.

    That’s not good.

The club seem to be running to catch up with everyone else’s agenda which is not what you want from our Board. If our Board are formulating policies on the back of newspaper headlines we are in deep trouble.

We should be have a long-term strategy that does not involve dancing to someone else’s tune.
