Untrue, disgraceful and hearing what you want to hear

1818

People hear what they want to hear.  When Neil Lennon was asked at a media conference if he was able to spend £6m on one player, as he was last year, he gave the honest answer; “Yes”.  He was able to make this type of signing, but that’s not to say he would regard this as the best use of his very finite resources.

Some felt “cheated” when Celtic ultimately didn’t make a £6m signing, they perhaps only read headlines with promises to that effect, without drilling down to the actual quotes.  Nothing can be done about this.  Dave King is another story.

King desperately wants to do something positive for Newco Rangers, perhaps mindful of his role as a director when Original Rangers were consigned to liquidation.  He wants to believe that he can bring influence to bear on the collection of hedge funds and Respectable Local Businessmen who control Newco, but he appears to be indulging in a bit of ‘hearing what he wants to hear’.

Newco accused King of making “untrue” and “disgraceful” comments, which is perhaps polite for “glib and shameless liar”.  Based on their public comments, Newco are in the right.  After almost two years of over-promising and under-delivering, they have played clever.  Specifically, they did not publicly promise to reveal their forward budget plans for the club before season ticket renewal deadline.  Why would they?

King met the board and then told the world he won this assurance from them.  I’d be amazed if Graham Wallace was sufficiently malleable to be manipulated into making such a commitment to a man who led Oldco into liquidation.  Wallace’s 120 day review period was surely chosen not because it takes anything like this long to discover the blatantly obvious, but because it allowed him to kick all this trouble into the long grass of the close season.  Wallace’s entire strategy for this season is not to be drawn on discussing the long metaphoric winter that lies ahead.

A few weeks ago I described King as the Pied Piper of Govan.  In truth, I don’t expect many fans will sign up to his hair-brained “give me, not them, your money” plan.  It’s far more likely that thousands of would-be fans will simply tune out.  There are a million more things people can do than watch lower league football; maybe some could back the team their grandchildren will support, I hear they have Champions League qualifiers coming up.

The worst thing for King right now is for Salary McCoist to fluke a cup win today, allowing Newco to flood their support with season ticket renewal notices on Monday on a wave of positivity.  Acting on the eve of such a major game will surely have been a well-considered move.  Better all-round if United win, momentum is halted and those hedge funds and Respectable Local Businessmen are forced into a humiliating liquidation.

Don’t bet on it, though.  The current key holders will have contingency plans of their own.

Two prepared to call things out though Tom is a bit johnny come lately.

  3. Honest confession:

I have loved the misery that has visited Ibrox, the club, their fans .. The never ending circus has amused me no end. However I’m now BORED TO DEATH with it.

Admin 2 – are there are jokes left when that happens? No .

I actually now don’t care if they disappear or if they resurge.

I want a bit of meaningful competition. Ideally that would be Aberdeen as they are my local team but I don’t really care who it is as long as there is a team there to push Celtic on and give us a bit of competition.

  4. tamrabam,

Nevin has had plenty of opportunity to condemn such singing. He turns a deaf ear to it except when someone (alledgedly) tells him Celtic supporters are culpable. Disgraceful bigotted ignoramus. To think he was a good football player and he is reduced to lauding the deid team’s anti-football. You have to feel sorry for him.

By the bye, it is very very wild, wet and windy down here at the moment.

  5. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Kris Commons being linked with a move to The EPL it says he wants to play there I thought Kris was very happy at Celtic mind you at age 30 another big pay day would for him probably be welcome. We will have to be careful in the summer we cant afford to sell to many players or the CL qualifyers could become a real struggle.H.H.

  6. Good morning friends from a dry, brightish and calmer than of late East Kilbride.

Is today the day when ole Miguel Angel Jiminez will finally win a major? And does anyone else think that St Johnstone are in with a real shout today?

  7. My friends in Celtic,

Reading back with interest ref Cleator Moor Celtic and Scott Carson.

The actual area of Cleator Moor is like a throwback to the past and a wee enclave of Celticness in Cumbria. ( Is there such a word as Celticness )?

I loved my time there and the locals once they got to know you were fantastic. The club was founded by Irish immigrants and the people I met maintained a great fondness for Celtic.

However :- Carson of the Celtic doesn’t sound right.

    HH.

  8. Commons would be a signing of extreme desperation for any EPL team. Kris has all the skill in the world but lacks the speed or application required at EPL level. He is tailor made for SPL… I suspect he knows that.

I know someone who played with him at Derby and his talent was highly regarded but he struggled with producing consistent performance due to his laziness. SPL football has not made him fitter at the age of 30

The unseen fenian hand strikes again…….

  11. Cults…

    Agree re KC.

Clever player, good football brain, not quick and now (despite great goal return this season) reflexes slowing a bit.

Sounds harsh but suspect we’ve seen the best of him. I’ve loved him in a Celtic vest but think he’ll be more back up in future.

That might of course depend on who if any leave and who comes in!

  12. Hamiltontim is praying for Oscar on

Just my opinion but I’d say that Kris Commons pretty much carried the team for about 3 months of this season.

    He’ll be going absolutely nowhere.

  13. Marrakesh @ 9.10

Celtic are not Nevins club so there is no problem with him acting as an apologist for the Deid team because they did not swindle, cheat HIS club.

  14. Jobo & GCT..

A St J with today would not surprise me in the least. But Niall McGinn has his mojo back….

Anyway…a New Firm final would be a great climax, potentially the biggest cup final crowd for maybe 25 years and another poke in the eye to the Armageddon brigade!

  15. What did the sportscene panel make of the non award of a clearcut penalty to Dundee Utd ?

And did they explain the mysterious shrinking ibrox pitch?

  16. Morning all….just watched BBC highlights of Dundee Utd cup tie ,read fholks on here mention D U should have had a Penalty ..couldn’t have been that certain as they would

have shooorly shown it :O( as for the hun Law hitting the bar ,a bad cross into box.

  17. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

    Gearoid.

Hibs are nevin’s club. Just like every other club in Scotland, they were swindled and cheated by the Huns.

  18. Hamilton / art of war/ justafan

Commons is perfect for Scottish football. I think he’ll score a few more goals for Celtic in the next couple of seasons before joining the coaching squad as has been intimated by both Lenny and the player himself.

Commons and Stokes will be fighting it out to partner Griffiths IMO.

  19. So! That was the best performance EVER by a team losing 3-1 in a Scottish Cup Final?

I’ve never heard or read so much urine in all my life.

I was getting worried my bookie wouldent pay me out on some new technicality that thems where the better team so yer not getting.paid out.

There is OTT and there is OTT, but this way OTFT, do they honestly think that people are as daft as thems and we believe all this excreta that has been tossed at us since the final whistle yesterday? Not just by one or two, but by the whole of the SMSM.

The pain is obvious the bias was and always has been predictable, but! They do forget we have a tool now it’s called the internet and tha tool we use very well.

The biggest stick they had was paranoia, enter the internet? Now it’s obsessed, I honestly think they should put under obsessed in the dictionary “Celtic Supporters who protest against the cheating of a club playing in the SPFL, and the governing body who run the game in.scotland” when you sit back for a wee while and think about all that has happened since 1888, and what we have achieved over these years playing in this corrupt secret society establishment with no hand outs, no help, no secret agreements , there is no other club in the world who has raised the bar higher than my/your/our club, then again we’ve never played a team of the park and lost 3-1, and you know what? We never will, and neither will any one else, another world record for thems, stick another fag burn above the badge.

  20. 2nd semi on Bbc Shortbread tv

so those viewing should see any changes too pitch layout

    hail hail

  21. I thought Ibrokes looked diff. Yesterday, they really changed the dimensions of the playing surface? Any proof of that? Was it reported this had been done?

  22. Madden kept the game flowing? Well, mainly in one direction. And he certainly didn’t stop it when Dundee United should have had a penalty. But how many dodgy free kicks did he award the plucky lower league club in the Dundee United half?

Love the idea of The Rangers being sponsored by a betting site. It would only be funnier if it had been Greggs. Or a payday loan company.

  23. mornin’ – just reading back…

Pet Navan and Huge Kevin are not the story – its what causes them to have and hold prominence that is…Especially those that purport to work for a respected national organisation with a contracted responsibility to everyone.

As a supporter of this Dear Green Place I will trust that our Bhoys chase down the story…..

…and take it to its conclusion. ( progress on this should be addressed)

What might clog my gears is if we are seen to be just a

    …..”$h!7 Disturber”…..

….we all know that Shortie aint straight ……no story there.

Substantive proof needs to be forced home and out in the open with the perpetrators brought to book. Finish the job for the good of….all of us.

If Pet has openly contradicted himself, it might at least be worthwhile asking him the necessary questions as a follow-up. ( who knows, his headphones might have been screwed on to tight, or his apparently brainy napper a tad too big to hear properly…?)

So, for the avoidance of doubt follow up on Pet, follow up on the backstory and get a result we can all share in – the game is dutched enough, and the pitch has been narrowed for too long.

( …and there are very obvious and some sleekit blog bashers who are out to spoil the blog – that’s to be expected in any social medium, they’re not hard to spot)

    HH

  24. I went to Ibrox yesterday and have to say United didn’t play anywhere near the level they played against us last week and the memorable final of last year 4-3 AET.

The Bootleggers played well aided by the ref. However the game was littered with poor passing and lacked any real quality. It was exciting because as United went into a shell it could have went either way. United didn’t test the keeper enough for me. In the first half they had three chances 2 goals and a decent save. Second half they were poor and I feared Jackie’s young side wouldn’t see it through.

But the main point is compare last seasons semi

Celtic 4 Dundee United 3 AET

and the performance of the beaten semi finalist to yesterdays match and it’s night and day.

So Nevin and the BBC are talking total nonsense.

  25. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

    Home game

    Hand picked ref and assistants

    Dimensions of pitch altered

They were still thumped 3-1…, glorious in defeat …MSM are embarrassing

  26. I would really be embarrassed if Celtic narrowed the pitch, especially against an SPL side.

I might understand if we playing Real, Barca, Bayern etc but I’m sure UEFA would rightly stop it happening.

I’ll bet the pitch is it’s normal size again.

Sevco should go the whole hog and not cut the grass or roll the pitch.

  27. Until the chairmen of the top teams, Lawwell, Milne, Thomson (who seen it with his own eyes yesterday) demand no Scottish officials for games involving Rangers* then this cheating will continue unabated for ever.

There are too many Rangers* supporters in the upper echelons of the SFA and refereeing fraternity to be anything other than loaded dice for the other 41 teams.

It was proven in 2010 just how easy and how good referees from other nations are, this of course would be a huge admission of failure and would be opposed by every panty wetting (as MWD would put it) blazer, MIB and exMIB media apologist.

Until then the clubs can have no complaint, as the power is within them.

  28. Sleekit to go with FFin’ dignity:

“Let’s give McCoist the handshake and dignity he deserves

The man has been immense in probably the most trying conditions a Rangers manager has ever encountered…. the pressure must have been huge to ensure promotion from these past two seasons which he has achieved with distinction…[but]we haven’t progressed the way we should’ve as a footballing ethos

Once king is in hopefully in the next month or so, I say we give McCoist a good handshake, he deserves to be paid the remainder of his contract nobody can deny him that , and then give him a role similar to what John Grieg had at Ibrox…… this change has to be handled with dignity for him- some of the anise he’s taken has been well OTT …..Hold your head high ally you’ve done more than anyone for our club it won’t be forgotten”

    ——

“Ally doesn’t need our cash: cash that is desperately required for rebuilding our football club…. If anything I’d like to see him buy into a new shoe issue”

    ——

“Ally will take us to the top league and show that he is made of the right material” [Thrice yes!]

    ——

“give him a new role as statesman. He deserves that much”

    ——

“He’s earned the right to be paid his contract and leave with dignity….Look at how club legends are treated at other clubs? Eusebio at benfica, maradona at boca , Maldini and so on”

    ——
