Untrue, disgraceful and hearing what you want to hear

1818

People hear what they want to hear.  When Neil Lennon was asked at a media conference if he was able to spend £6m on one player, as he was last year, he gave the honest answer; “Yes”.  He was able to make this type of signing, but that’s not to say he would regard this as the best use of his very finite resources.

Some felt “cheated” when Celtic ultimately didn’t make a £6m signing, they perhaps only read headlines with promises to that effect, without drilling down to the actual quotes.  Nothing can be done about this.  Dave King is another story.

King desperately wants to do something positive for Newco Rangers, perhaps mindful of his role as a director when Original Rangers were consigned to liquidation.  He wants to believe that he can bring influence to bear on the collection of hedge funds and Respectable Local Businessmen who control Newco, but he appears to be indulging in a bit of ‘hearing what he wants to hear’.

Newco accused King of making “untrue” and “disgraceful” comments, which is perhaps polite for “glib and shameless liar”.  Based on their public comments, Newco are in the right.  After almost two years of over-promising and under-delivering, they have played clever.  Specifically, they did not publicly promise to reveal their forward budget plans for the club before season ticket renewal deadline.  Why would they?

King met the board and then told the world he won this assurance from them.  I’d be amazed if Graham Wallace was sufficiently malleable to be manipulated into making such a commitment to a man who led Oldco into liquidation.  Wallace’s 120 day review period was surely chosen not because it takes anything like this long to discover the blatantly obvious, but because it allowed him to kick all this trouble into the long grass of the close season.  Wallace’s entire strategy for this season is not to be drawn on discussing the long metaphoric winter that lies ahead.

A few weeks ago I described King as the Pied Piper of Govan.  In truth, I don’t expect many fans will sign up to his hair-brained “give me, not them, your money” plan.  It’s far more likely that thousands of would-be fans will simply tune out.  There are a million more things people can do than watch lower league football; maybe some could back the team their grandchildren will support, I hear they have Champions League qualifiers coming up.

The worst thing for King right now is for Salary McCoist to fluke a cup win today, allowing Newco to flood their support with season ticket renewal notices on Monday on a wave of positivity.  Acting on the eve of such a major game will surely have been a well-considered move.  Better all-round if United win, momentum is halted and those hedge funds and Respectable Local Businessmen are forced into a humiliating liquidation.

Don’t bet on it, though.  The current key holders will have contingency plans of their own.

Someone posted a video yesterday interviewing DU fans as they left the midden. Half of them said the referee was a disgrace.

Watched the full game yesterday. First time I’ve done that with TRIFC. Armstrong and Robertson are future Scotland starters for sure. Should Celtic consider a bit of the increasingly popular buy to loan caper?

A few English Championship/League one clubs would lap them up for a season or two, after which they are ready for the Celtic first team or ready to be sold.

Totally agree Meansong…..neither of them would cost more than 1m. Probably get both for 1.5m!!

For most of them, King’s recent court conviction in South Africa for illegal tax affairs is an irrelevance, a non-story. King is reputedly rolling in it and his moral background in business doesn’t enter the equation. These supporters want his money, pure and simple.

Slightly conflicted as to who I would like to win. Liverpool for the romance but heart says City.

Switched on the telly in time to catch the winner of the men’s race cross the line in the marathon. The roll n skwer in my hand was but one of the reasons he didn’t need to fear me in the home straight!

Right. Time to do my visit scotland routine. Just back from a week in a wee fishing village called Gardenstown near Macduff. Stunning wee place built all higgledly piggeldly (apols I’m no engineer!) onto the cliff side.

Zero reception which – apart from a dearth of CQN – was a great thing. And a fab wee restaurant run by a lady called Moira right at the wee harbour. But you need to book ahead cos it’s tiny and popular and rightly so.

And so tomorrow back to work with only the Jobo Balde weather observation to get me through the commute!

Still when the holiday started there was still the danger of an Orc cup double. Now there is none.

If I’m honest I thought Madden did ok.

he could and should have awarded the penalty. But I was pleased he applied the rules at the first goal. Super Salary was seething at him not calling offside. That is the type of decision they usually get.

last week I expected Clancy to determine the outcome. He looked like a rabbit in the headlights early on. But after r a shaky start I thought he had a good game.

  17. Very interesting piece by Alan Pattullo in today’s SoS. It’s about Duncan Ferguson’s head-butt on John McStay twenty years ago. Now, the ref, Clarke, didn’t see it and W Smith didn’t see it. At the post-match press conference not a single hack mentioned it. McCoist – to this day – is convinced that there was no contact.

McStay was shunned by his club after the butt. His career was over. Ferguson is now a coach at Everton.

After the game Polish commentators told about strong connections between Liverpool and Celtic. They underlined that it was Celtic who organized first charity funds game for the victims.

  22. Good afternoon friends.

28 years ago yesterday we had a very fine 1-0 away win at Pittodrie to continue our pursuit of Hearts in what was to become a thrilling finale at Love Street a month later. And 28 years ago tonight Jack Niclaus became the older ever winner of The Masters. And how do I know this? Well let’s go back a couple of days more to Friday 11 April 1986.

WEnt to the ole Centre 1 FC Annual Football Dance on the Friday night and around 10.30 or so had my first ever conversation with my wife to be. After a few dances I was brave enough to ask her out for a drink the following evening and returned to my mates to proudly announce that I had a date the following night. “Eh, no you don’t” mentioned my mate Gerry, “we’re at Pittodrie tomorrow!”.

Big decision for Jobo and of course there was only one winner. Went back over to the lady and said I’d need to cancel our plans but’d be happy to see her on Sunday. “Tell you what” she said “phone me on Sunday and I’ll think about it”.Thought then that I’d blown my chances but all worked out in the end.

A few drinks out on the Sunday evening and the rest is history, Back home around 10-ish (I remember she was working early the next day) and sat home to see my £2 ‘sympathy’ bet on ole Jack turn into an £80 profit.

    My own ‘Carlsberg’ weekend.

And as a final postscript – first date 13/4/06, firth house bought 13/5/88, married on 13/8/88, daughter born at 9.13pm, So yes, 13 is indeed an unlucky number! ;-)
