Untrue, disgraceful and hearing what you want to hear

1818

People hear what they want to hear.  When Neil Lennon was asked at a media conference if he was able to spend £6m on one player, as he was last year, he gave the honest answer; “Yes”.  He was able to make this type of signing, but that’s not to say he would regard this as the best use of his very finite resources.

Some felt “cheated” when Celtic ultimately didn’t make a £6m signing, they perhaps only read headlines with promises to that effect, without drilling down to the actual quotes.  Nothing can be done about this.  Dave King is another story.

King desperately wants to do something positive for Newco Rangers, perhaps mindful of his role as a director when Original Rangers were consigned to liquidation.  He wants to believe that he can bring influence to bear on the collection of hedge funds and Respectable Local Businessmen who control Newco, but he appears to be indulging in a bit of ‘hearing what he wants to hear’.

Newco accused King of making “untrue” and “disgraceful” comments, which is perhaps polite for “glib and shameless liar”.  Based on their public comments, Newco are in the right.  After almost two years of over-promising and under-delivering, they have played clever.  Specifically, they did not publicly promise to reveal their forward budget plans for the club before season ticket renewal deadline.  Why would they?

King met the board and then told the world he won this assurance from them.  I’d be amazed if Graham Wallace was sufficiently malleable to be manipulated into making such a commitment to a man who led Oldco into liquidation.  Wallace’s 120 day review period was surely chosen not because it takes anything like this long to discover the blatantly obvious, but because it allowed him to kick all this trouble into the long grass of the close season.  Wallace’s entire strategy for this season is not to be drawn on discussing the long metaphoric winter that lies ahead.

A few weeks ago I described King as the Pied Piper of Govan.  In truth, I don’t expect many fans will sign up to his hair-brained “give me, not them, your money” plan.  It’s far more likely that thousands of would-be fans will simply tune out.  There are a million more things people can do than watch lower league football; maybe some could back the team their grandchildren will support, I hear they have Champions League qualifiers coming up.

The worst thing for King right now is for Salary McCoist to fluke a cup win today, allowing Newco to flood their support with season ticket renewal notices on Monday on a wave of positivity.  Acting on the eve of such a major game will surely have been a well-considered move.  Better all-round if United win, momentum is halted and those hedge funds and Respectable Local Businessmen are forced into a humiliating liquidation.

Don’t bet on it, though.  The current key holders will have contingency plans of their own.

Organised by the Fans Against Criminalisation group, protesters held aloft banners urging the Scottish Government to “Axe The Act” and reportedly sang “SS SNP” in reference to the paramilitary organisation linked to the Nazi party in Germany.

Police Scotland confirmed that restrictions on the protest had been enforced under Section 12 of Public Order Act at around 2pm. The order gives officers powers to constrain the route of a procession or prevent it from entering a public place. It has been claimed protesters were barred from entering a nearby McDonald’s restaurant as a result.

Labour MSP Michael McMahon, an arch critic of the legislation, said the heavy-handed police approach exemplified both the judiciary and SNP’s attitude towards football fans, who were “assumed to be criminals”.

He said: “Protesting is part of the democratic process and should take place at conferences. At the last Labour conference, there were Yes campaigners as well as a group complaining about a closure. There was no need for the police to get involved and, from what I hear, the protestors were served a notice as soon as they stepped off the bus.

“Police officers should respond to any activity that is not acceptable; the very fact they didn’t even wait to see if there was trouble emphasises the point fans were trying to make.”

Looks like the spineless corrupt SFA yet again turn a blind eye to the Huns wearing a jersey with 1872 on it.

And to think they freely booted out some wee highland league team for filling in the teamsheets with ‘wrong information’ (one signature instead of two).

  17. Yesterdays game was competitive, and competitive games are usually a good watch. There wasn’t much quality, what there was I thought came from United, who were below their normal standards.

Rangers seem to me to be without a single player who has the quality to be part of a top flight title challneging team. The defence was dreadul, the midfield grafted and put themselves about but showed precious little quality. Daly & Shiels were awful up front.

The game was competitive in my view because Rangers put in a shift, and because the referee allowed them a latitude at times that took the breath away. For the avoidance of doubt, i don’t go along with the theory that referees set out to assist Rangers. I have seen instances where the performance has been so one sided the only conclusion that coild reasonably be drawn is bias. McCurry against Dundee Utd under Levein was a classic example, Dougie McDonald in a couple of games against Celtic.

The entire season when Mowbray was Celtic manager was littered with decisions that were so one sided in Rangers favour it was outrageous. The stakes that season were such that if Rangers did not get the automatic place in the CL , the lights may have gone out before Craig Whyte turned up to take the blame and so that Murray’s poodles in the media could point the finger away from him.

I also accept , that Celtic have had some questionable decisions in their favour, but then so have all clubs. The point of this wander into refereeing history is that yesterday Madden seemed to me to give everything to Rangers. His refusal to protect United players by booking or sending off Rangers players was obvious. The only chance Rangers had yesterday was if United were bullied out of their normal game, and that would only happen if there was no fear of appropriate punishment . Madden’s one eyed performance yesterday provided Rangers with the opportunity , their lack of quality then blew that opportunity.

It is a worry though that United had to endure such a refereeing performance. Scottish Football is going to be in a very bad place if we see a return to the refereeing standards of 2009-10 just because Rangers survival depends on them winning trophies their lack of talent would otherwise deprive them of.

  18. Hoop hoop Hooray on

So according to wee Pat it was such a great game because bobby madden did a great job in letting the game flow. Had he applied the laws of the game the zombies would have finished with 8 men and the arabs would have been awarded a stonewall penalty.

More satisfying however to beat 12 men rather than 8.

I think we all know what’s coming when a zombie teams reaches the top division. Emboldened by the lack of accountability and protected by the media, the Mowbray years will pale into insignificance. We better start taking it on the chin.

All of this will indeed happen because most clubs , including ours won’t stand up to the cheats at the SFA .

What would happen if all clubs joined together and told the SFA that they were no longer prepared to put up with the breaking of rules to suit one club and that the NEW club should be recognised as that – a NEW club .
