Virtuoso Elyounoussi as Laxalt keeps Motherwell at bay

220

This morning we have the luxury of being concerned at the volume of chances Motherwell passed by before briefly pegging Celtic back in yesterday’s encounter at Fir Park.  Before kick-off, all that mattered were the three points that necessary to keep our title challenge on track.  We got what we wanted.

Virtuoso performances by Mohamed Elyounoussi and, to a lesser extent, Tom Rogic, meant the win was eventually secured in some style.  Motherwell threatened repeatedly from halftime until they eventually scored on 72 minutes, better teams would have done more with the chances, but stout defending, by Diego Laxalt in particular, kept them at bay.

Elyounoussi’s potent ability to time his arrival into the danger perfectly brought his first hat-trick as a Celtic player.  He described the first, a rebound from Albian Ajeti shot off the post, as lucky, but he was the fastest ‘lucky’ player to make the follow-in run.  His second, from Rogic’s cutback, made the most of tight space inside the Motherwell area.  The salmon leap-like header for the third goal was a delight.  On this form, Mohamed will have a big influence on the season.

Shane Duffy and Odsonne Edouard were rested, with the returning Kristoffer Ajer and Ajeti preferred.  Both did well.  Ajer’s early retirement through a recurrence of his groin injury is a concern, I don’t think we will see the best from Celtic until he and Christopher Jullien are paired together at the back.

  1. Only fundamental difference on Sunday from Thursday is that Mutthers are several levels below Sparta , Ferencvaros etc. Simply put we have too many tanner ba players who find it difficult to play in a more defensive mode when faced with the choice …. against any decent team we cannot hold our shape for more than 70 minutes …

  6. Gene – yes, that would certainly cover a good span of a Celtic Supporter – and the average age of a CQN member.

Yes, that is the fella’s name…………..The Books are called Disappearing Ireland., and they feature portaiture and stories behind loads of oul’ wans from the country. It’s a fabulous pictorial memoir of people and places fast vanishing from the cultural landscape here. Ask Santa!

Anyone know why Motherwell play ‘Bela Ciao’ before their home games?

I’d imagine that’s the background most of our people had, not only were they labourers they were day labourers meaning each day you waited at a crossroads or town street and you would be picked up for a day’s work. Image quite literally living from day to day for you and your family? What I find striking when these old photos are colourised is their just the same as you and me, I know that sounds daft but often in black and white old photos just look ‘other’, different. Also you get to see the details of their clothes they are dirt poor their sole possessions they are wearing.

Unfortunately so many people in 2020 live those self same way, so sad.

  10. New fly on the wall documentary following Hearts during the 2019-20 season starts tonight, 9pm BBC1 Scotland. Could be a fun series 😁

  11. Maybe I’m an idealist, maybe, a pragmatist, who knows?

I fully accept Rangers have improved dramatically, but I have watched a few of their games on highlights etc, and I feel their confidence is going to be their downfall and become arrogance. It’s happened before and soon someone will give them a doing. On the other hand we are not at our sparkling best, but hey , player for player, who in the hun lot would you have playing for us. Tavernier, yes and maybe the haircut,Kent, but that is all.

Winning breed confidence, but I personally feel they will be found wanting after Xmas.

No, not fantasy dreaming on my part, just we need a few breaks.

We are better than them, and we must believe we are and soon we will be on our way again.

Off out to peel a grape for the missus

  12. Why don’t the club hierarchy call out these cheating refs before one of our players gets crippled?

Nay baws suits, the lot of them!

Been said on here a few times recently that Dallas junior does not have the qualifications to referee in the SPFL.

The club should be making serious enquiries.

    But they are not!

    WHY NOT??????????/

  13. Just a quick comment about the number roasters who come on here to spread their latest facebook nugget or youtube sensation regarding CoViD19 or JB.

There are one born every minute sorry second for all the tripe that gets spread far and wide by closet fascists / Russian cybernet trolls / professional wind up merchants to get the hard of thinking upset about something.

JB videos on youtube showing that he is not safe with other people’s children — funny that they only mention it now 5 years after the event. All that was missing was the pizza restaurant and hooky land deals in Arkansas.

Aussie cops — countryside traffic department no less — who can string three thousand words together mentioning every right wing CoViD19 gripe known to man and a few anti immigrant tropes thrown in for for goodwill.

The one good thing about all this nonsense is it starts to show what people really think — social and societal norms plus a lack of vocabulary mean that too many obviously think it but can’t or won’t say it. All it seems to take is a facebook or twitter like to show what their real viewpoints are.

The support for CFC is and should always be a very broad church — just a case that it is starting to get a bit too broad as people stop thinking for themselves and let the internet do it for them.

Aussie cops — get a grip.

Joe and the Pizza restaurant — STFU.

  14. I can imagine Lawwell seeing wee Frimpers gettin’ clugged and saying, well he’ll be out for a few weeks but he was playing shite anyway.

I am getting to a point where I really don’t like our board of directors.

In fact I don’t like them a lot.

What do SPFL have on these guys that they won’t defend our club and players?

    Shysters unworthy of their role.

  15. Gene,

    I missed that post, sorry

I’m currently looking at my family tree and 2 strands come from Armagh and Mayo – those pictures focus on the lives they lived as farm labourers in the early and mid 1800s.

whatever you find out if you want feel free to share, I love all that stuff, anyone’s history fascinates me.

I know the “who do you think you are” programme drives a lot of interest, and the stars sell the show but I wish they would do the same for “ordinary people”.

There is a programme in scotland , i think called something like “life in a frame”, that does just that with an old family picture, it is fascinating

  16. if it was up to me I would be back in for big Fraser during the Christmas transfer window 6 months on loan for the rest of the season.

  17. AD had it turned up to 11 yesterday with able help from the touchline.

Every time we went neat them it was a foul against us.

The ninja tackle on JF was a shocker but nothing done.

You get the impression some of our players are carrying a bounty on their heads.

Not a case of chocolate bar gymnastics but a case that their are rewards for robust play against some of our players — seemingly it was all the rage in late 80’s NFL.

They are giving it a real go this season.

Everybody knows what has to be done.

Not a conspiracy just a networked community doing what it can.

To afford Forster we’d need to offload Turnbull and Soro.

I’m ok with that because they don’t get a game for us.

  19. PHILBHOY,

I am beginning to wonder too about our Board’s lack of criticism of the MIBs and failure to even question why Dallas junior gets to ref so many of our games and those of the deid team.

It’s now 20 years this month since Neil Lennon signed for Celtic. Instrumental in Celtic’s huge success since then as player, captain, coach and twice as manager. How young does Martin O’Neill look in this too ?
