Where did it all go wrong for Ronny?

624

So where did it all go wrong for Ronny Delia?  First of all, it didn’t all go wrong.  He won two leagues, and if you think it was impossible to lose those, just think back to a team in last season’s Championship, who enjoyed an equally superior income over their competitors, but lost the league to Hearts by the length of the M8.

It was just as possible for Aberdeen to win the league this season or last, as it was Hearts (reeling only months after going into administration) to win the Championship last season.  Ronny delivered the primary requirement each season – the league title, but he failed on the second tier requirement – qualify for the Champions League.

Soon after the Legia Warsaw debacles Ronny reflected on the question about whether it was right to ask his new team to adopt his tactics, instead of waiting until he’d recruited players to fit his system.

Two years on we are still remarkably short of players to play his system.  Innumerable wide midfield players have come and gone, with many still lingering in the stands.  We have an enviable list of creative mids in the squad, yet none have been able to dislodge Stefan Johansen, who by his own admission is having a disappointing season.

Then there’s the striker roles.  Leigh Griffiths has been a significant reason why we’ll be crowned champions again over the next few weeks, but he’s pretty much on his own.  No one has been able to put pressure on him.  For a while Leigh had to wait until John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic dropped out of the picture, but you’ll struggle to recall this season’s striker arrivals, Carlton Cole and Colin Kazim-Richards, three years from now.

For these reasons, we can say recruitment is where it all went wrong for Ronny.  It’s not about 4-2-3-1, half the top teams in Europe play with that formation, nor is it (the now abandoned) zonal marking system, also the dominant top-level defensive system.

We’ve simply recruited the wrong players for creative midfield and striker positions.  It’s also subtler than to just say we’ve not recruited good enough players.  Some who have escaped Celtic Park after arriving in the last 22 months have done pretty well elsewhere.  Guidetti and Scepovic are La Liga strikers, while Jo Inge Berget also made it to the Bernabeu this season.

None of them are great, but I suspect we made them look poorer than they are.  Kazim-Richards is unlikely to trouble Sergio Ramos next season, but there’s more to him that what we’ve seen, or will see.  We’ve been a place careers diminish disproportionately.

On the positive side, Ronny brought the best out of Leigh Griffiths.  He moved the disintegrating Emilio Izaguirre aside for 18-year-old sensation, Kieran Tierney, (the biggest winner on Sunday).  And he finally resolved some of the least-organised set-piece defending known to man with the recruitment of Erik Sviatchenko (on this point, you cannot over-estimate the value of adding one good player to a team).

One thought crossed my mind several times this season: If he hadn’t spent so much money fruitlessly trying to make one system work, would he have acknowledge he was on the wrong road and changed tactics?

He backed himself into a corner so stuck with the same faltering policy at Celtic, but surely, surely, if he walks into another job soon, unhindered by that wasteful use of budget, he’d not follow the same tactical strategy which failed him?

  1. There seems to be a fair amount of speculation that the board a big problem and to some they seem the main reason for our failure and ultimately for Ronnie leaving.

There was similar speculation around the time Neil Lennon left, he was fed up with the board, they picked the players, no investment, etc…

If Neil was so fed up with Celtic and the board are so bad I’m surprised he seems so keen to come back. Maybe he wasn’t, maybe they weren’t.

    Just a thought.

By the bye, I do agree that we shouldn’t be claiming to have won the league before we have done so.

    Hilarious, Right?

Small potatoes considering we been chanting ‘ 10 in a row, here we go’ for the past 36 months.

CQN is a conservative (with small c) website. KDS, Etims are far more scathing and demanding iof the club. Honestly, the dissent here is nothing compared to elsewhere.

I think it’s up to P67 what his content is and rightly so. He has given us a platform and we’ve been glad of it, all of us reading it in place of the daily Hun. It’s free. It’s interesting. There’s new content every day. It will involve over 10 hours a week work for p67 in all likelihood. It’s allowed cranky old men a bit of company, kept the old brains sharper. We should be glad of it.

In fact..why dont we have a group statue of the board cast in Gold and placed directly in front of Celtic Park.

Oh i am not worthy…let me bow down at the altar of the board.

4 years of hubris summed up in that moment.

I dont see anything changing soon.

Celtic are run by people who refuse to learn from their mistakes, and who repeatedly attempt to qualify for the CL, laughably, with no transfer budget and a rookie manager.

That is absurd….and has been shown to be a failure.

What is required,…and even a fool shoulkd be able to grasp this….is a decent manager and decent players….its not some great unfathomable question….its common sense.

  17. Greenman and Cultsbhoy(?) Must have the best working day, unless they are on annual leave. They seem to be 24/7 perennial negative posts How many times can Peter Law well be disemboweled? Oh, and they don’t go to Celtic Park, …. no time because on CQN 24/7.

  18. Where did it go wrong for Ronny?

    Lost me…

I didn’t think it had. He got a chance to run a major European Club, which was way above his resume credentials, he worked it to the best of his ability and could end up with two Scottish Championships to add to his Norwegan success.

No, looking at his ability and experience the guy has over-achieved.

    Here’s a MUCH more relevent question…

Where did it go wrong for Celtic!?!?!?

    Hail Hail

  19. Ronnie’s admission that we have not improved was honest.

He said some players won’t miss him and thats telling.

All coaches have their trusted circle of players.

It’s how this is managed that keeps resentment from the others festering and then undermining them.

The coach and his assistant have a responsibility to stop this happening.

Could it be they failed in this area?

Players respond to certain things in coaches.

    1-A proven track record.

    2- A system that works.

    3-Personal improvement

4-An understanding of role they are assigned.

Mourinho at Chelsea had 1 and 2 of above in spades.

Was 3 and 4 the problem?

Players are like most humans and are self centred so self sacrifice is not an option.

Once individuals switched off Chelsea were no longer a team.

No matter how much individual talent a club has unless they are blended into a team success will be hard to come by.

I would be that guy you mention. You’re dead right, back to back league cups. Have to admit I checked up on you. How could I forget we beat Thistle 3-0 in ’56? Still 2 LC in over 10 years was no threat to old Rangers’ supremacy. Big Jock was the man.

*I recall hearing we had won the LC after a replay, it was a daytime game and my da didnae bother taking time off tae go tae it.

Tae me at the time it was akin tae winning the Glasgow or Charity Cup. It was only the following season it gained any significance to us Tims. We didnae win it again for another 8 years, against the same club tae.

  28. Understand your frustration, reminds me of a technical guy who worked in the office, his negativity was getting everyone down. Took him ohut to Archibald Simpsons, told him I needed a specialist to fly out to a rig, he was that man. He loved it! He asked if he could leave office and work on rig, result! He did really well. It was the office environment that made him unhappy. Hope that Jim Murphy rumour is just that bring back Maxwell!!

  29. I have to say I am gobsmacked, I find at absolutely incredulous that people seem to think that a manager being given a list of signing candidates and choosing from the list is anything other than standard for 99% of football clubs of any size worldwide.

In any top sport where a manager signs players they give a remit to the scouts for the type of player they are looking for who then report back with options. The manager would then have a say (their say holding different weights in different sports and different clubs and different countries around the world) on who from that list would be targetted as a priority. There would be nothing stopping them making their own suggestions but if we are going to employ a network of scounts what is the point in not using them? PL should not be the one choosing candidates but that’s not really what a lot people are complaining about here.

You can’t make out that not scouting out the players yourself is somehow being a weak or poor manager. That is just management in this day and age.

  33. Good press conference from Ronny. Clearing up a few questions that people wanted answers to. Whether people believe the answers or not is another matter but I have no reason not to believe him.

As honest a leaving press conference as I have ever heard.

I would have preferred if certain players are happy he is going that he put his jacket on and walked out the front door with pride. His leaving gambit should have been.

I have failed here but the players owe it to the fans to go and win this league. They played sub standard for me but I hope they will do it for my coaches, they owe the fans that much at least. Good bye.

As for anyone asking why JC & JK have not indicated they are leaving yet. Someone will have to train the players if the new man is not in place for the first day of preseason training.
