Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

  1. We invest financially and emotionally in our club to a level that DD PL and the rest of the torys on our board could never comprehend. Our so called custodians are nothing but a bunch of imposters. It’s time to make Celtic a supporter run club and to hell with the consequences. Rather die on my feet than on my knees.

  2. I remember walking out of Celtic Park one night in November 1995 after watching Celtic getting beat 3-0 by PSG. We were totally outclassed that night and as we left the comments were along the lines of “that’s what we should be aiming for” “that’s the style of play we want at Celtic”. There was little condemnation of the players as they tried, worked hard but were up against a better team.

I am angry after last night, not because we got beat. I’ve seen Celtic beaten by worse teams than Molde and I probably will again. What made me angry last night was watching a team that barely forced the opposition keeper to make a save, we didn’t put more than 2 decent balls into the box and we passed to the opposition under no pressure several times through the match.

I don’t have the insight to lay the blame on the manager’s tactics, the players or Peter Lawwell, but last night was abysmal and for a Celtic team to look defeated after losing an early goal says there are serious problems that need to be resolved… and resolved quickly

  3. I keep reading that 4-2-3-1 is the only way to go and that modern teams don’t play 2 up front. Really? I watched PSG play Real Madrid a couple of nights ago. PSG played Ibrahimovic and Cavani up front.

With 7 points from 3 CL games, PSG seem to be doing fine, thank you very much.

Understand your comments, however it’s well past 10pm and if my language ( which I did warn was “rich”). Was well outside of what children could hear at that hour from television, fair enough. Consider me chastised… I do not use strong language on any website, however in this instance I will cut myself some slack.

One I picked up on, Any one watch Swansea under Laudrup and Weighorst ? A very attractive team to watch, with the management team picking up players through their own network, I believe

    ———————

Laudrop was apparently very unpopular with the Swansea players and at Mallorca, though I agree Swansea were very attractive to watch.

Though their team/squad/style was based on a football director buying in the players.

Cavani doesn’t play up front, and he’s been moaning about it for the past 2 seasons.

Real Madrid play 1 up front as well, so do Chelsea, City, Bayern, Man U etc

Are you a ‘Supporter’ or whit?? No one NO ONE anything other than gutted at last night and some of our other performances this season and last… But feeding the rags and chip wrappers does nothing for our Club and only fuels those with an agenda against us.

What do we do.. walk away after every poor performance and rotten result??

Jeez, we’ve been up against it since time began, lets stop supporting our enemys and dig in behind the Bhoys.. Does anyone think there is a single person at Celtic Park not feeling the pain right now??

Agree … and find it odd … great players come and sign for big clubs and look poor in the briitish game … for example, Di Maria … genuinely struggle to understand it.

Part of the problem? Me ?? Any idea how long I’ve had a season book?? I take it that’s you finished then with the Team?? Never be back.. scarf onto the running track..

Your choice… I’ll be there on Sunday.

    You ask

I would say yes. Ronny for one. He has a dream job, the biggest job he will ever have in football, and although he is totally out his depth he will not be sacked. Yes he will win plenty of games in Scotland but he is clueless in Europe.

    Still people defend him.

The players don’t understand his fast attacking system because they are hooked on beer and pizza

  12. The Huddle

I didn’t hear or know that about Laudrup, but I did read about him bringing in players from Spain he was aware of through his time there ?

Have to say, I also like Liverpool style of play under Brendan Rogers, until he lost his top players, and a committee got his new ones :-)

BRTH, how come your target keeps moving, trying to get long johns (HT and Minx are a bad couple :-)))

  13. The one great redeeming feature of our club is our supporters. We will come through this as we always do but we are much more wiser to the machinations of our board.

  16. It is funny how we all deal with our anger, disappointment and hurt in different ways when Celtic lose. Really there’s no right or wrong so long as it’s genuine.

    Saturday 10th April 2010.

    Celtic v Ross County

Scottish Cup semi final at Hampden Park

    “F=== sake Celtic!”

    “Lennon you’re a clueless d—!”

    “Ross County! F===in’ Ross County!”

The father and son looked at each other as they walked the steps of the old stadium and listened to the abuse. They disagreed on whether the shouts were deserving or not but both had been watching Celtic long enough to know that inside the stadium wasn’t where you criticised the team.

    “You’re a f===in’ embarrassment Celtic!”

It was at this point that the father couldn’t take any more.

He was in his 60’s, thin as a rake with prominent cheek bones and had an uncanny resemblance to Hank Marvin from The Shadows.

The shout had come from the stairs parallel, one section along. The lad, probably in his mid 20s was tall and well made with short spiky hair. His short sleeved, hooped jersey barely concealed the tattoos on his broad upper arms. An Irish flag appeared briefly as his arm lifted in gesture to shout once more.

“I’m fuckin’ embarrassed watchin’ that ya lazy w===ers!”

At this point the son was struggling to keep up with his father as he knocked fellow supporters out of the way like skittles in a bowling alley as he moved his way past the rows of seats. Predictably. like an expectant tsunami, other supporters quickly moved aside.

Within seconds David (for that was his name) met Goliath.

The father looked up and pointed his finger at the abuser. By now his son had given up trying to hold back the tide and was by his father’s side.

“Embarrassed!? Embarrassed!? To be a Celtic supporter? You’re embarrassed to be a Celtic supporter son, is that right?”

The abuser was thrown, he hadn’t expected to be confronted at all let alone by an oul git that looked like some sort of ageing hippy. His forearms flexed and he moved towards the seemingly frail man before him. From behind him four of the younger man’s friends edged forward.

“Who you talkin’ to ya oul d===?!”

It wasn’t a question in the real sense.

At this point the son forced his way in front of his father but quickly noticed several other men making their way down the the stair case in their direction. But before they could get there his father started.

“When I first started watching Celtic we could only dream of getting to a semi final! We were bereft of talent, bereft of decent players and without any sort of guidance on or off the park. We sat in the shadow of the Huns and were told that that was our place. We had referees who clearly despised us and we were opposed in any form we made of progression on or off the football pitch. Any expression of our Celtic ethos was met with hostility and downright hatred. The faith of our founders is derided and mocked and our Irish heritage is sullied at every turn. We’ve beaten cheated in Liverpool in ’66 and here at Hampden in ’87. I know son I was there and you were still shiting green. Today was a setback and yes things may need to change but always remember who you are, where you came from and how you present that to others!”

    Suddenly, there was a pause.

Those who’d come down the stairs were friends of the son and were ready for action if required.

“Fair play auld yin. Nae offence. Up the Ra!”

Calm was restored and handshakes were offered all round.

The troops on both sides were stood down.

As the father band son left the stadium the old man turned to his son.

“By God we were pish the day!”

    ————————————

That was my last game with my da. He died four years ago today. I’m proud to be the son and I’m so proud he was the father.

If you’re standing still you’re going backwards.

If you’re going backwards you’re falling off a precipice.

It’s only when you attack the things that stand in you’re way that you can stop the decline.

    Who are our obstacles?

    1) An absentee landlord

    2) An absentee landlord’s puppet

    3) An absentee landlord’s puppet’s neophyte

These are the causal relations that directly impact on our footballing decline, consistently realised over a very long time.

We have been witnesses to the rape of our club.

Besides, sipsini shouldnt be wasting his time on here anyway. He’s got a walking stick to sort oot for hiz new burd.

  19. I have said this on numerous occasions over the last year or so. Who is the ‘football man’ at our club upstairs for an inexperienced management team to refer to or indeed report to?

RONNY has come from a tiny wee team in Norway straight into the manager’s job at Parkhead. I spent some time with Davie Hay last year working on Caesar & The Assassin ( the follow up is The Winds of Change is out soon!) and discussed this with him.

RONNY has literally no-one to turn to and is making mistakes at crucial times – repeatedly.

Are the players coming in his signings? If they are it’s not exactly overwhelming is it?

If they aren’t then we are surely making a mess of things.

Davie Hay has been there, done it all and has an eye for a player. He also told us to get out of Scotland due to the cheating masons with whistles. How things would be different if we’d listened.

Collins and Kennedy are also, with due respect, punching above their weights in getting their current gig. So we have three gambles in there and none have the savvy it would seem to learn from the mistakes.

Remember the substitution at Hampden in the semi- final bringing on Tonev who hadn’t played for months? Last night’s substitution was just as bad.

Ronny told us to judge him in a year late last summer. Before his time runs out he could do worse than seek the assistance of someone like Davie Hay who could assist him in dealing with the suits and also offer words of wisdom on what it means to manage Celtic, playing in European competition and basically setting his team out better.

Davie Hay would be cheap (!) and would make a great director of football.
