Partick Thistle 0-2 Celtic

172

Kris Commons’ goal was outrageous. It wasn’t so much a chance as a hopeful ball into the box. Kris jumped to cushion the ball on his chest, from them, Thistle had no chance. He let the ball drop before scooping it over the onrushing goalkeeper into the net.

No one else at Celtic could have scored this goal. Kris possesses the rarest of talents: the ability to create a chance out of nothing, and he’s better than anyone else we’ve got at converting chances too.

After playing 88 minutes yesterday Kris will be feeling it this morning as he’s a few weeks behind his team-mates as a result of his broken toe injury. It’s a big ask for him to be ready for the Champions League play-off round but I’d make an exception for him.

Loved Tom Rogic’s goal.

  1. I don’t get a chance to post much but I read nearly every comment.

I see our multi moniker trolls are back, nowhere to be seen in the aftermath of the Qarabag win . One described them as fourth tier English quality now another or is it the same one tells us Thistle have players not good enough for the sixth tier English game.

We were, however, entitled to be confident of progressing.Surely.

I only have time for a quick reply.

We were entitled to hope to qualify but confident- Nah! Not if you had seen the Legia matches. Not if you had seen Maribor knock out a strong(-ish) Rangers team. Not if you had seen the first season records of previous managers in Europe (MON knocked out by Bordeaux; WGS by Artmedia; NFL by Braga, Utrecht and Sion). WHy would you be confident that a first season manager would manage CL qualification when WGS and NFL did not and MON and NFL could not manage UEFA/Europa qualification either.

Ronny has admitted his errors .His mea culpa.

He has but the man who never made mistakes never made anything. What you have not seen is an admission that, If it had not been for me and my errors, Celtic would have sailed qualification last year. Is it just a Mea Culpa or should the culpability be spread?

We lost our lifeline in the Maribor game to a late-ish goal when we had an away goal advantage. Was Ronny really responsible for that error? Maribor had knocked out a Bosnian and Israeli team that season.

Now he needs a firm purpose of amendment ie. qualification.

How many chances should he be given?

Are we going to have the same conversation in a years time?

You cannot amend to make a promise never to get it wrong. You and I get it wrong every day and sometimes on several occasions daily. Is he getting more right than wrong is the way the question should be framed? is his long-term strategy worth the price of short-term vulnerability? Or are we bound to accept and never resist the short-sighted, knee-jerk approach that a CL qualification failure, regardless of domestic results, squad cohesion, and style of play, is a sacking offence. Do we have to play along with a mythologically based truism?

    The players are good enough.

Questionable. If they were, they would not need managed and coached. If they were, they would be qualifying every year- they don’t and never have.

    Is Ronny?

Don’t know? What criteria do we use? Yours is solely that 2 CL qualification failures justifies sacking. That, to me, strongly suggests you believe we are entitled to get to group stages. The actual achievement record shows that this is not an annual achievement.

We both know that 2 CL quali failures will hurt Celtic but, we have settled for UEFA/ Europa before and Ronny has already got us into the Europa competition. European football to Xmas has been secured already. Getting to play it at CL is a bonus that will see our “good enough” players exposed. If Ronny wanted fewer failures, he should be trying to ensure our loss to Malmo as he will pick up more plaudits and co-efficient points from a Europa campaign than from a CL one but he is bigger and braver than just looking out for his own skin.

I noted your reply to skyislandfill, where you said Celtic should not employ a European rookie. Which of the previous managers we had would not have been a European rookie. Big Jock and MON had very limited experience of the arena- no way can they be portrayed as either veterans or experienced when they came to Celtic.

    Work calls

  4. Good morning, im wondering if Jim Craigan (the ex dob who captained. Motherwell) got any sleep last night after that penalty call, and a ridiculous one it was, he was in a right tizzy, my god they showed the incident more times than the engerland 1966 goal, he was upset, am I right in thinking he holds the record for the most OGs in the SPFL, and four of them where to his favoured club, THEMS?

    Enough said .

Obviously I’d prefer a bigger lead, but would take the 1-0.

The defence has only lost one goal in the last 9 hours of football, including no concession to Qarabag over 2 legs, though I accept the general weakness of the opposition in the other matches.

Still, That gives me some confidence about our ability to make a 1-0 first leg lead a good result.

No full backs bombing forward, remember, in those circumstances. (At least, I hope not!)

  7. Hi Paul67,

Great result for the unbeatable Glasgow Celtic – Totally agree, Tom Rogic took his goal supremely well.

    Hail Hail

  8. I’d typed quite a lengthy post about Ronny’s Celtic team in Europe but it’s disappeared! Gggrrrr.

The gist of it is that the Qarabag tie has given an indication that Ronny is learning to adapt for European football.

We lost a very high number of goals last season in Europe and often as a result of playing this open, expansive style of football that is very susceptible to teams who counter attack quickly or can make long passes accurately out of defence.

Against Qarabag be kept it tight at Parkhead and came away with a result that gave us the advantage going into the second leg.

Unlike Maribor last year we were far more compact in the second leg and consequently we achieved the required result to progress to the next round.

    That’s a real positive.

I expect Malmö to be a step up from Qarabag and will certainly pose more of a goal threat.

I’d take 1-0 in the first leg right noo!

  9. BT – profiteering seems the simplest explanation. Recently bought tickets for a game on line and was offered the opportunity to have them posted out for £7.50!! OR print them myself at a cost of £1.50 – I’m assuming they send the ink!!

Even EasyJEt don’t charge you for printing your own boarding passes!!

Does this happen when buying tickets for concerts etc? I’m sure it does – it shouldn’t.

No I did see that. I still expect Malmö to be a more difficult proposition than Qarabag but I’m optimistic that we can get the required result.

  15. Progress being made in Europe, add in a couple of league wins and you have a decent start to the season. We’re not firing on all cylinders yet, but I’m content with where we are.

Another striker coming in would be nice though.

  16. Bonjour,

Quick question – Just leaving to do a 5 week offshore stint in Congo. Have stocked up the Kindle with the usual range of diverse material (Fitba, Classical, Contemporary, THriller) reading material. Anybody got any “must read” recommendations for books which have come out in the past year or so?

Re ten team league, John Collins told us to relegate a couple of diddy teams! He said no one would miss them as they’re crap etc. Seriously this is a good example of how little regard that Scottish football is held in south of the border. I had to chase the ad agency to remind them that the Scottish season had started last week and if we were going to display the league table it should at least show this season and not the last one. Will have words.

I see the meeja have given up trying to trip Ronny up, or find flaw with him, so are now playing the negativity card on John Collins who is simply telling the truth …… anything anti-Celtic will do, eh lads ….. Bless every single one of you …….. Luvin’ it … Meanwhile Celtic just keep getting better week-on-week …. and the Glasgow Celtic will be there. …..(second week of my leave, so back home and away now for a wee swim, then take the dog for a LONG walk…..oh, the stress of it all….hehe)

  26. Why all the fuss about what John Collins has said?

The Aberdeen manager had this to say without a word spoken

McInnes said: “We always knew if we scored what they would require would be too much and at half-time we were pleased with what the players had given us.

“No-one will test our discipline domestically like that and their movement and swiftness of their play was excellent.

  27. Just back from a week in Portugal, and adding through meaningless work e-mails:-).

Great to see to Celtic play a very professional away game in Europe. It looked like a lot of meticulous preparation and professionalism at play from management, backroom staff and players.

Good to see positive comments about Boyata. Personal observation is not always reliable but he did seem a man lacking in confidence. I thought the two goals he scored would do wonders for him . It seems that this might be the case and I am beginning to be hopeful that we have another, excellent central defender in our team. So important. He is certainly superb in the air and that might be a handy asset against Malmo.

    Cheerio for now,

If no team can test your side’s discipline like Riejka did – why aren’t your team the Champions?
