Spectre of Celtic and wincing at financial realities

1141

I winced slightly reading that Deliotte’s suggested Celtic were a ‘top 40’ club in terms of turnover.  The days we featured in their annual Top 20 report are long gone, lost in the raft of TV deals which flooded into England, France and elsewhere.

This is a problem for Celtic but at least we have a decent shot at Champions League income each year.  Others in Scottish football have been left to wither on the vine (phrase of the week), as the likes of AFC Bournemouth cherry-pick their talent.

Celtic need a solution to help them compete with their peer-group of European heavy-weights but the solution has to accommodate the other top Premiership clubs.  Dundee United have the ability to produce remarkable talent, if only they had the TV deal to allow them to retain it long enough to build a team.  The same could be said for Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Inverness and Ross County.

Scottish football would benefit enormously by federating with a neighbour.

You would think after administration and liquidation those who look to Ibrox for their football fix would, to adopt a popular phrase around those parts, have suffered enough from financial ‘ambition’.  Not a bit of it, it seems.  Not when the spectre of “being battered” by Celtic looms like an enormous green and white tidal wave.

For the last 12 years of its existence, Dave King was one of the non-executive directors of Rangers, paid to ensure that financial controls and risk management [role of non-execs defined by government 2003 Higgs Report]were in place.  I am not being glib or shameless when I say he did a remarkable job.

With Newco appearing to be in some financial distress, King told the Daily Mail he opposes planned cutbacks: ‘If we cut the club back to a level that’s just enough to win the League One or the Championship then that’s fine. But the gap between ourselves and Celtic when we get to the Premiership will be obvious.

“But I don’t feel the club should respond by cutting the costs to the point of saying ‘we only have to do what is necessary to beat East Fife or whoever.

“Because if you do that Celtic will build up to 10-in-a-row and we could be so far behind them that even when we are back in the Premiership we are  not in a position to catch up.

“We cannot risk going to Celtic Park and being battered 6-0.”

Those trying to keep Newco Rangers afloat will not welcome suggestions that current shareholders don’t have the “appetite or willingness to invest”, a few months before they will ask fans to buy season tickets.

Learn your lesson, there is no shame in losing 6-0 to Celtic, this is sport, bad results can happen, but there is enormous shame in failing to live within your means.

I’m off to contemplate 10-in-a-row for a while. To hyphenate or not?

  1. Lots of shares been traded again this week and a few that were large quantities…..a million in 1 transaction and 2 million in another if i am correct?

    Even at 20p a share the 1 million fetches a cool £200,000.

Considering these characters were “investing” a penny for every share its quite a tidy sum to take with ya as you get the hell out of there :)

IF of course Stockbridge traded any.

I know what my money would be on.

Of course the spin is that he didn’t get a pay-off!

Didn’t need it more like and anyway……was there anything left!?

  2. Kevbhoy

Just heard Stockbridge left sevco was there not talk on one of the charlotte fakes he would leave and one of the murrays would come in makes sense would keep there fans happy for season tickets no?

    I thought P Murray was banned ?

  3. Eddie 18:18 – One you missed from your list of “A board who….”

A board who gave no finacial assistance to the GB to fund the magnificent 125 TiFo for the Barca CL game, but were happy to profit from sales of the photos.

Or is that one just an Urban Myth?

Tooting Tim 18:32 – Cheers mate. I usually get a lotta ma “shoite” from the local sites here. Unfortunately, these are (with the exception of Tim Vickery and Andy Downie)Portugese lingo based.

  4. 79caps (19.03), you beat me to it. I was just typing this:

With our strikers apparently on strike this season, we could do worse than sign a combative, attack minded, goal scoring midfielder. This will also help provide some insurance should wonder Bhoy Kris Commons get injured. How about this guy, who looks like he has a bit of class:

I particularly like the effort (from) 1m55s.

Surely he wouldn’t cost us too much?

Winning Captains (18.55)… You forgot to mention that €215 of that was on beer. The other €1.25 was the cost of the postcard (including stamp) home to the wife and weans.

Andy Downie? I used to be his manager when he played Sunday football in Edinburgh late 80s. Massive Hibbie- good centre forward. Translated the biography of Garrincha that came out about a decade ago. Great read

Interesting that Clyde are already reporting that Stockbridge has left with no payment when the statement clearly says that no “ex gratia “payment has been paid.

Who knows what his contract may have stipulated in the event of dismissal?

The Bhoy seems to have an eye for goal and a slick left

this Bhoy goes forward at pace, not afraid to take on an opponent

and most important has a pop at goal rather than a square pass.

I see his loan is extended to the end of the season.

Hopefully Celtic will get the benefit next season.

    Not financial. Just game time.

RE: “Is CQN rapidly becoming the Celtic cyberspace equivalent of the Daily mail??”

I think the accusation is a wee bit over the top. CQN has always been a wee bit more board-friendly (or board-neutral), finance savvy, and a wee bit more middle class and elderly than other sites. But, it was never the Daily Mail or Pravda or any other inappropriate comparison. I don’t frequent a lot of the other Celtic boards regularly but everyone of them would be hard to sum up with a comparison to a daily newspaper.

The Huddleboard is anarchic, technically savvy, and much more inventive in the invective department. It contains posters who are better informed, funnier and more original than many on CQN but it also has a lot of wind-up eejits who just like to rant and rave and insult fellow Celtic fans. It has a style unique to itself and cannot be compared with a newspaper or an equivalent Sevco site.

Kerrydale Street seems remarkably similar to CQN and contains a full gamut of opinions from a largely middle class and, let’s be kind, more mature demographic.

    Likewise Celtic Minded.

There is more linking the sites than dividing them. They have got slightly differing styles but many of the posters here manage to negotiate the other sites with ease.

“However over the previous 6 months or so I would say there has been a lurch to the right, or to put another way, a tendancy to come out in support of the board and the position of the PLC as opposed to supporting a group of fans.”

I don’t see much change in that 6 month period. The major divide on CQN for me was the summer of 2012. Before then, Paul took a lot of flak for his GOD predictions and was being tasked for the perceived failure of Rangers to go as bust as was predicted. Since 2012, though many have not changed their “speculate to accumulate” mantra, there has been less tilting at Paul for his failures in prophesying. You may be exaggerating the influence of tony donnelly, who is one of the few who matches the accusations you make in this post. He’s just one guy, fairly untypical of CQN views. Macjay has always thought as he has thought. 67Heaven has not changed his views but they have both been here a lot longer than 6 months.

For me, there has been a welcome reduction in right wing garbage these past 6 months since Kojo and TSD are much less frequent contributors. Long may that continue but, before they start any thin skin whining, I am not advocating Paul ban them.

“It would appear that many on here have fallen for the “we’re working in the background to find a way of joining the EPL”. This is never going to happen, we’re a Scottish club and any solution to our problem has to be one that involves our future participation in Scottish football.”

Never say never. Nobody predicted the Berlin Wall fall or the Bosman ruling. Events change and the elite clubs chasing the financing structure to service their debts, will create circumstances from which our club might better its lot.

You may have a preference for staying in Scotland and taking your chances there. And fair play for that. But many of us would prefer to tilt our lance at the top tournaments than huddle round for warmth in the poverty of the Scottish League because, though it is hard to predict the future, there are very few who are predicting that Scotland will be rich enough in finance or talent to be nurturing football clubs, in this competitive environment, who could compete at Euro level, any time soon. Just look at the Euro achievements of Motherwell and other Scottish qualifiers recently.

“Those that want us to get an invite to English football seem to think it will depend on us dropping our association with any form of “extremism” within our support, this extremism to them is anything that represents overt support for Irish Nationalism.”

Kitalba, who does not want this outcome, is keen that we reduce the “wind up” use of “the rebs” too. There are very few who want us to drop all reference to our origins and allegiances. Even if there were more of them, it would not work. I am in favour of reducing the wall to wall rebs which have really only emerged since the 80s at CP and, to be honest, they are already withering at our library. I want the GB back as they provided the colour and singing that was half the attraction that bound me to this club. I don’t want our association with Ireland or Irish Nationalism dropped and the day it is proscribed is the day I walk away. However, a call to not tilt at UEFA’s politics ban at Euro nights, does not equate to that.

“they now have a majority of supporters in agreement that political expression and free speech is not something that should be endorsed at Celtic, rather it should lead to the banning of any supporter with the teremity to dare upset the bigots within this dear country.”

Most supporters have said to the GB “Keep singing and producing banners but do not get us fined and banned”. Politics are personal and not an espoused value of the club. In short, the spectator has freedom to express himself as he wishes, within the boundaries of the law and stadium regulations, but the club has no overtly espoused politics. I am ok with that distinction.

We are not all left wing, we are not all pro-independence, we are not all free market, we are not all pro-Cuba or anti-US. There are tendencies within our support because of where we came from, and long may that continue, but we are not all as one on anything but support for Celtic.

The Board have made huge mistakes in their handling of GB issues. A fair sized proportion of the Celtic support believe that. And a fair sized proportion of CQN still believes that too.
