Spectre of Celtic and wincing at financial realities

1141

I winced slightly reading that Deliotte’s suggested Celtic were a ‘top 40’ club in terms of turnover.  The days we featured in their annual Top 20 report are long gone, lost in the raft of TV deals which flooded into England, France and elsewhere.

This is a problem for Celtic but at least we have a decent shot at Champions League income each year.  Others in Scottish football have been left to wither on the vine (phrase of the week), as the likes of AFC Bournemouth cherry-pick their talent.

Celtic need a solution to help them compete with their peer-group of European heavy-weights but the solution has to accommodate the other top Premiership clubs.  Dundee United have the ability to produce remarkable talent, if only they had the TV deal to allow them to retain it long enough to build a team.  The same could be said for Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Inverness and Ross County.

Scottish football would benefit enormously by federating with a neighbour.

You would think after administration and liquidation those who look to Ibrox for their football fix would, to adopt a popular phrase around those parts, have suffered enough from financial ‘ambition’.  Not a bit of it, it seems.  Not when the spectre of “being battered” by Celtic looms like an enormous green and white tidal wave.

For the last 12 years of its existence, Dave King was one of the non-executive directors of Rangers, paid to ensure that financial controls and risk management [role of non-execs defined by government 2003 Higgs Report]were in place.  I am not being glib or shameless when I say he did a remarkable job.

With Newco appearing to be in some financial distress, King told the Daily Mail he opposes planned cutbacks: ‘If we cut the club back to a level that’s just enough to win the League One or the Championship then that’s fine. But the gap between ourselves and Celtic when we get to the Premiership will be obvious.

“But I don’t feel the club should respond by cutting the costs to the point of saying ‘we only have to do what is necessary to beat East Fife or whoever.

“Because if you do that Celtic will build up to 10-in-a-row and we could be so far behind them that even when we are back in the Premiership we are  not in a position to catch up.

“We cannot risk going to Celtic Park and being battered 6-0.”

Those trying to keep Newco Rangers afloat will not welcome suggestions that current shareholders don’t have the “appetite or willingness to invest”, a few months before they will ask fans to buy season tickets.

Learn your lesson, there is no shame in losing 6-0 to Celtic, this is sport, bad results can happen, but there is enormous shame in failing to live within your means.

I’m off to contemplate 10-in-a-row for a while. To hyphenate or not?

Agreed but it also occurs to me that it might be BS himself who’s keen to get that message out for fear of , ahem , “civil unrest”.

Given the abuse he took at the AGM and the look of utter terror on his face that wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

  2. angelgabriel – there’s a first time for everything! I agree, from that video Callum looks a smashing player with his finishes and skills taking on opponents. I would have him back next season and pushing for the first team.

  3. setting free the bears @19:38,

Measured, balanced and well constructed post.

The tone you strike symbolises everything you are trying to say about this blog.

Excellent post mate, not really looking for an argument, merely spouting off after a bad day.

I agree with a lot of your points and to be fair some of mine were a bit OTT, just one thing, I can’t really remember the last time(if ever) I heard wall to wall rebs at Celtic Park.

Apart from that I don’t think our veiws are to far apart. As I said just ranting after a particulary bad bit news.

  6. Hamilton Tim- Sorry I missed you earlier, as BSR mentioned (and thanks to him in my absence) I’m not sorted yet for Sunday, so if you can help in any way I’d be very grateful.

Let me know and I will get my contact details to you.

    Many thanks!

  7. Brian Stockbridge

Under a Scottish law agreement signed on 17 September 2012 (but effective from 1 September 2012), RFCL employed Brian Stockbridge as Finance Director of RFCL for a salary of £200,000 per annum (plus benefits and expenses). Mr Stockbridge is also entitled to a non-contractual bonus of 100 per cent. gross salary if the Club wins promotion from the SFL, share options, in the event that the Group’s shares are listed on any recognised exchange, with a value equivalent to two and a half times Mr Stockbridge’s annual salary. The agreement is terminable by RFCL either for causes or on 6 month’s notice and by Mr Stockbridge on 3 month’s notice. Following termination, Mr Stockbridge is restricted for 9 months from, without consent, directly or indirectly being employed by any football club in the top division in Scotland as a chief executive or similar role, soliciting any director/senior employee/player/youth player to leave RFCL or employing a director/senior employee/player/youth player who was employed within the 12 months preceding the date of termination.

With the greatest of respect : absolute rubbish.

To think that many of the people on here have fallen for any party / board line is well —-plain daft.

This blog represents a broad church; the only common denominator that unites us is our support of Celtic. From the many eloquent posters I read on here, equating that with inability to make up their own minds is again plain daft.

You want change yet endorse more of the failing status quo. You vilify those of us who see our club in a setting more befitting of our status and urge our board to do what is in the best interests of Celtic.

I personally want our board to do everything possible rather than wait on “competition” from a dysfunctional club.

I and the majority on here were attending Parkhead long before the concept of the GB and God willing will be there when they are a distinct memory.

The Celtic family have given to charity long before the concept of the GB and will continue giving long after they are a distant memory.

I suggest you check what Celtic have done for the east end regeneration programme and the disabled to bring a bit of equality to your post.

As for the living wage, yes I agree, however for the people I know who work at CP it is a second job and not their main income. Boris Johnston pays his staff a minimum of the living wage, are you suggesting————

    HH, always in Celtic.

PS : Apologies for any interruption as I only have 5 minutes. Nothing personal as I just read you have had a bad day.

  10. Reilly1926

I wonder if Finance Director Stockbridge will be used as a scapegoat for the up and coming administration. “We didn’t know how bad it was.”

It’s all about opinions, I agree about the east end stuff but to say that it’s ok to pay people min wage as it’s their 2nd job totally misses the point IMO.

My post was essentially about the board and our support, I have few concerns over the boards stategic aims re the Celtic corridor but that is I suppose one of my gripes, they seem to put more effort into getting good deals on land purchases than defending innocent fans who are being criminalised for merely expressing support for an suppport for a political ideal.

Anyway, the quiz is starting soon and as I said it was just a rant, if I’d reread it before posting it I would have changed some of it. Just goes to show you should always leave the rants a while before posting them lol

  14. I guess it must be getting near to season ticket renewal time down at the Bigotdome.

Easy way to get the Orcs onside , sack Stickbridge.

  16. Any thoughts on Leigh Griffiths out there this evening or has it already been debated ?

Read some judgemental nonsense on various platforms today. Clearly a bit of a moonman at times but he has the natural ability, undoubtedly.
