A kind of transubstantiation

840

Bobby Clark was the first Aberdeen goalkeeper I knew.  He was thought of highly, until Jim Leighton and colleagues stepped the performance levels up a pace at Aberdeen.  He has two places in the history books, one for the longest period not to concede a goal in Scottish league football, which when established in 1971 was also the European record.  He was also the first goalkeeper in European competition to face a penalty in a penalty kick competition.

Back in the dark days of the late 90s I had a Celtic mug with the message ‘Records can be broken but history can never be changed: Celtic, first British team to win the European Cup, 1967’.  Bobby Clark lost his European record within months and at Tynecastle next week Fraser Forster can break his Scottish record.  Bobby’s place as first to face a penalty competition is his in perpetuity.

Records are harder to break than they should be.  People get nervous when they approach, but it will be enormously satisfying if Celtic can sail through 31 minutes at Tynecastle without conceding.

Back in 2011 and early 2012 practically the entire CQN community was discussing Rangers impending insolvency event as an absolute certainty, but we’ve never been the most impartial community.  It was not until Daily Record journos stopped applying to Our Hero for a job and suggested ‘this excrement is about to get real’ that the penny dropped in many places.

This included portions of the Celtic support, who responded to the ‘news’ with a Congo line at Inverness, at the same time forever changing the substance of jelly and ice cream; a kind of transubstantiation, if you like.  This was no longer a sweet, it is nourishment for the ages.

Now the same newspaper has been authorised to run a story that there is doubt over this month’s payroll – would they dare suggest as much without authorisation?  When your friends are telling you they can hear the bell toll, you know where this is heading.

The SFL wants any takeover to be completed by the early part of next week or they will invite applicants to replace the stricken club.

A consortium is known to be interested in the club, but it is not expected to complete a deal in time.

“That remains to be seen,” said SFL chief executive David Longmuir.

“But we and the SFL had to make sure we protected the integrity of our league.”

To understand the killings at Kingsmill, you need to have some understanding of what it was like to be a catholic or nationalist living in the north at that time.

The midseventies was a time of real fear and terror, people were being killed going or coming from work,at street corners, eating their dinner and sleeping in bed almost on a daily basis and many of these attacks were multiple killings.

The sheer feeling of terror in nationalist communities was tangible. You had the UDA,UVF Shankill butchers,UDR,British army and the RUC all attacking our people and the pressure on the IRA to act was great. Our next door neighbour was found with his throat cut in the boot of a car where he had been lying for days,no one went anywhere at night.Socialing was restricted to your own area in shebeens and social clubs.

The killings at Kingsmill were most certainly carried out by the IRA in response to the pressure from the communities who were under attack.Being a member of the IRA at the time I know that they were loathe to engage in tit for tat sectarian killing

Even though it was denied by the IRA,no one else had the capacity to carry out such a large scale operation with up to a dozen people taking part, the only other active organisation at the time was the INLA who were to claim the Darkly gospel hall killings.

The only transparent link to the IRA and Kingsmill was that Raymond Mc Creesh was caught with one of the weapons that was used there. Raymond was a close friend of mine,a man of substance and great courage.IRA weapons passed through many Vols hands over the course of time and his demonization and the unsubstanciated connection to Kingsmill by some Unionists and journalists are disgraceful.

The ambush at Kingsmill was,for the IRA,a calculated political action to halt the onslaught on our people and it worked, for it to have the desired effect it had to be shocking and it was and IMO it was justifiable.

I have not seen the article john o;neil talks about, nor do I have any wish to,but anyone with a titter of wit would understand that reference to Raymond and Kingsmill with the ROH is an attempt to curb the popularity of the campaign from getting as far as it can.

Finally, I have great sympathy for ALL the families who have lost loved ones in the war(including my own).

This is a belter. Who do you think said this?:

“The SFA, the SFL, the SPL will need to look very closely at these aspects of how the game is structured and financed.”

“Unfortunately, the problem with Gretna was their success was down to the money of one person and there was no stability behind it because of that.

“That’s something that maybe lessons have to be learned about, the stability in the game.

“If someone is putting a lot of money into a team and it’s getting a bit of success for a while, is there any future for that team if that one person pulls out?

“I think all of us in Scottish football need to look at that, all the bodies, everybody involved in the game.”

    ———————————————–

None other than the then SFA chief executive and all-round guru, Gordon Smith.

And nearly four years later they were running around like blue-arsed flies when Rangers were going bust.

What happened to the lessons that were going to be learned?

And where was Smith at the time? Wasn’t he working at a club that was being run by “one person” (Craig Whyte)?

Oh, and does anyone remember him complaining about one-person-clubs, success and stability when Murray was at Rangers? No, me neither……

  13. Big Bones,

Your post was not surprisingly quite upsetting to read at times. The honesty was also refreshing in contrast to some of the earlier posts made about this subject. Contrary to what you may have read earlier, I didn’t make any specific points about that incident other than to state the obvious: it was a brutal act. Personally, I cannot see any justification for such evil. It was no different to the cold sectarian slaughter which inflicted your community. Of course, having never experienced such conflict, I appreciate that that renders it more difficult for outsiders to comprehend much of what went on then.

I think it is time this bhoy decided if he wants to be a writer or a Celtic winger. If he put the same effort into his fitness and attitude that he puts into his epistles, I’d be happy.

John O Neill, Reprisal killing has gone on for centuries. The Brits have practiced it in Ireland for many many years. It was inevitable that the Irish would eventually respond and use it as well. It happened in the War of Independence in the twenties and the Kingsmill massacre is a more modern example. I am not trying to excuse it just trying to explain it. All killings are dreadful and in particular killings of innocent people whether Protestant or Catholic. Thankfully the war is over and we do need peace and reconciliation. This presents a dilemma, can you continue to honour and remember your own war dead whilst pursuing a peaceful agenda. I can understand the view that holding commemorations and singing songs of remembrance can be hurtful to victims from the other side. However neither side have a monopoly on hurt and suffering. If you are genuinely interested in this debate I would recommend that you read “One Day in My Life” by Bobby Sands. Both Big Bones and macanbheatha of CQN were inmates of the H Blocks and have first hand experience of the suffering and torture inflicted on Republican prisoners. If you read this book you might understand why we Republicans will always remember and honour these men.

Or perhaps the question is what or who is so powerful that not one man from 12 top teams will take the SFA on,is the gravy train that good ?? There can’t be that much money that everyone will sell out and watch this farce continue??
