A very personal Celtic

629

After I mentioned the Overseas Season Ticket holders last week, Auldheid (an overseas supporter) pulled some thoughts together on what his relationship with our club is all about.  Here it is, well worth kicking back for five minutes and reading:

“The phrase “BeCeltic” intrigued me somewhat as we all have different ideas of what that might mean. For me there is something about being a Celtic supporter that goes way beyond football. Every Celtic supporter everywhere feels it to some degree or other and every Celtic supporter demonstrates it to some degree or other according to their circumstances and their life experience.

You meet a stranger in a pub and if he is a fellow Tim he is no longer a stranger. If he is a fellow CQNer he was already your pal even though you had never met before. This feeling of belonging to something greater than self… it ranges from a distant almost spiritual connection to the club and what it stands for, to attendance with fellow supporters at every game the team plays, home and away.

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to BeCeltic (as I saw it) last season when I signed up for an Overseas Season Ticket.  You can read more about the genesis (and CQN’s part in it) here on Celtic Underground.

The concept on which the OST is based for me anyway reflects the Celtic ethos which manifests itself in the way we support not only the team but each other both in the official charitable work carried out by the Celtic Foundation and as everyday supporters doing mad stuff like a huddle on top of Ben Nevis for heavens sake!!! In support of our own deserving causes, like the Kano Foundation, which is but just one great example of the caring heart of the support.

The impact such work can have on people’s lives can never be fully appreciated until you meet someone, as I did whilst sitting outside a pub in Spain,  overwhelmed by the difference it made to their wellbeing.

Buying an Overseas Season Ticket was almost an act of faith in that I did not know if I had internet connectivity at my Spanish destination to watch Celtic TV. Initially I did not, but “God works” etc and a charitable neighbour gave me WiFi access that enabled me to watch ALL games home and away on TV, via connecting HDMI cable to the laptop, from the comfort of my flat overlooking the beach. (Hence the term life is a beach).

Even better, I had the option of watching games not televised by Sky or ESPN in local bars via WiFi on my mobile phone if the wife dragged me out for lunch in game time. (Bad stuff happens to good guys too you know).

Not all performances were great but both 4-3 victories over Aberdeen and Dundee Utd in the Scottish Cup were truly memorable. Luckily I returned home in time to attend the title winning game v ICT using one of my 4 OST match day tickets, which this season has become FIVE along with a £50 price reduction.

I was also very pleased to get a letter from the Celtic Foundation saying that my seat had been used in my absence by local organisations and as a Calton man I was delighted to see folk from organisations in my old stomping ground amongst the beneficiaries.

Personally I see last season’s OST initiative as simply another indication, along with the recent appointment of a Supporter Liaison and Service Officer, that progress is being made in an ongoing process of bringing the Celtic support even closer together using the wonderful communication tools we now have. I find that something to be excited about as a force for spreading good in a world where ethics (which is derived from ethos) seem to have been forgotten.

But lofty thoughts apart J : At  a very practical level the OST is a very good value for money way, especially at £250 for a Season Ticket with the ability to view all games on Celtic TV and attend up to five games when at home, given due notice, of not only being a Celtic supporter but of sharing the load of supporting Celtic across the full spectrum of the support wherever we are. From the Auldheids with grey or no hair to the younger gentlemen with too much and the Celtic ladies of all ages whom I find are even more passionate in their support (if you met my sister you would know what I mean).

So I have already renewed and if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford as well as able to make full or partial use of an OST, I would encourage you to do so via BeCeltic overseas season ticket.”

With fans like Auldheid, we’re in good hands. Trying hard to insist I’m not worried about preseason games……

  1. Another 400 police officers are due in Northern Ireland following hours of serious rioting in Belfast.

Chief Constable Matt Baggott described the trouble, which injured 32 police officers and an MP, as “shameful and disgraceful”.

Clashes developed when police enforced a ban on an Orange Order march and trouble flared in the Ardoyne area of the city.

  2. I think Commons is our best player, sure shocking fitness but he’s the only player that makes things happen up front for us.

And you’ve got to throw in Sammi cos well he can win us games out of nothing.

Right …. Ireland is now officially off my list of tropical diving vacation spots!

Kayal…. I’m really not sure. I’m generally of the opinion, unlike a few posters, that these friendlies don’t matter. However Kayals performance against Furth was awful. Couldn’t get the tempo of a training match. Which is a worry. id have been happy if he’d jogged about, won a few tackles, made a couple good passes. But he was throwing himself into tackles that he was struggling to win and getting caught on the ball numerous times. Not a good sign.

Fair point,so who would you chose in front of Joe?

And who would do his job bearing in mind we are only allowed eleven men on the park.

He scores from midfield,he creates from midfield, and he destroys in midfield.

Not a bad return for a dud.

  6. Just got a Tweet saying that walter smith named as worst manager in the history of the champions league.

    pmsl if true.

  7. EDB, in the championship i think,

as i thought – i would prefer Makay Stephen as he can pick defences and has good skill from what i’ve seen.

We are at a catch 22 , we played young promising players in germany and great they got experience but not results. So if we buy the finished article we can’t afford them. Which means our new policy is risky, and for it to succeed sales of players aside, we need a core group of players and experience with a disciplined losing of no more than 2 first team players a season.

Its a tough ask, last year has raised our expectation levels sky high and it will be a massive come down to even be in Europa League group stages. I would like to see us attract more finished articles at the right age from spain, germany, scandanavia etc on a bosman. The last i looked we had a wage bill of £30m + so as much as we have to defer to EPL our lower levels of debt make us lean & mean in terms of those markets.

Kayal in my opinion we can leave out of mid-field he is to rash and gives so many daft free kicks away.I thought when we first signed him he was the real deal but he hasnt improved and may even have gone backwords. H.H.

Good to hear Stokes was in good form last night.

Has he signed a new deal yet?

If not real of respect from Lawwell and especially NL.

If Hooper is set to be the next player to leave then the club better watch out Stokes doesn’t get a good offer from elsewhere as PL & NL have not signed a decent striker since……….Hooper & Stokes!

Kenyan Premier League side Nairobi City

Stars and JMJ Academy are set to reap big

    from Harambee Stars captain Victor

    Wanyama’s move to Southampton.

City Stars pocketed Sh0.5 million as

development fee in the a transfer that cost

Celtic Sh118.8 million (£900,000). City Stars

and JMJ Academy will each be entitled to

about Sh8 million (£60,000) in the latest

deal. Wanyama turned out for JMJ Academy

between 2006 – 2008 during the same time

that he also turned out for Nairobi City

    Stars.

JMJ has over the years churned out many

    talented footballers. City Stars chairman

Peter Jabuya said that they were looking

towards getting their share of the pie once

all the modalities have been worked out.

“Fifa laws are very clear. As one of the

clubs that nurtured him, we are entitled to

five per cent of the 10 per cent of the total

transfer fee. This is because our club played

a crucial part in his development and the

name of our club is inscribed in his trade

    license.

With the new season almost upon us, I am nervous about the next six weeks.

Losing pre- season friendliest isn’t over concerning.

But, losing our best player ( IMHO ) and potentially hooper, one of our top players, plus another 3 / 4 starters carrying knocks ( Brown, Ledley, Adam, Mulgrew, Forrest) is a big concern.

That is 5/6 out of last season’s first 11. Add to that the loss of Rogne and McCourt who did a job 4 or 5 times next season and my worry grows.

Over the course of a season, we could cope with those knocks, because we hope that the new guys will come good, and it looks like Irvine and Rogic are ready to make a bigger contribution.

However, time is not on our side.

In the next 7 weeks we will (hopefully) have 6 games which could make or break our season.

If we get to the CL group, then recent injuries and losses will quickly be forgotten.

If we don’t, the season will start on a downer , as we watch other teams and think what might have been.

Given the importance of winning through to the CL group, I think we should deviate ( short term only) from our current transfer strategy and bring in a couple of guys to help us out, over the very short term.

It might be we even release these guys at Xmas.

I am thinking the job that Alan Rough, Billy Stark did in late 80s , or even Paul Telfer.

Very short term signings – guys who know our league, know our club, don’t have to worry about moving house, getting a visa etc. they hit the ground running.

The ones I am thinking about are McFadden, and possibly, Kevin Thomson ?

Don’t expect all to agree, but just my thoughts on the importance of next 6/7 weeks.

I think mackay Steven falls into the same bracket though. Much harder playing against a packed defence.

Players like mark de vries (sp) and Michael higedon amongst others have scored goals in the SPL but I would’ve never dreamed of signing them.

I would think mackay Steven would be at the same level as Dylan if not worse off.

    Just for you.

I got great news yesterday my wee collie dug is going to be okay (slowly).

Last week in a freak accident as he chased a bird in the garden he run into the fence resulting in seemingly very bad spinal injuries.

After a week of rest (tramadol) and steriods, further tests and a lot of care and attention he has started to recover and is now walking about,

another six weeks rest is advised then plenty short walks, I know its not football related but I know it will cheer you up on a slow night.

  27. I thought Dylan & Twarzeck did well earlier in the season with Watt and then the tap seemed to get turned off in terms of appearances.

If you look at the over reaction to us losing in Germany and even those games in the SPL last year, NL hasn’t got that much goodwill to survive a few bad results with a full senior team, never mind the patience of the fans when playing youth players.

We are finding it difficult to find the right ingredients with this new strategy, i was never a fan of the youth setup as I don’t think it has been enormously fruitful and advocate buying the best Scottish talent from other clubs its probably cheaper.

I think McFadden is worth the money, Charlie Austin, like the look of Harris from Hibs.
