A very personal Celtic

629

After I mentioned the Overseas Season Ticket holders last week, Auldheid (an overseas supporter) pulled some thoughts together on what his relationship with our club is all about.  Here it is, well worth kicking back for five minutes and reading:

“The phrase “BeCeltic” intrigued me somewhat as we all have different ideas of what that might mean. For me there is something about being a Celtic supporter that goes way beyond football. Every Celtic supporter everywhere feels it to some degree or other and every Celtic supporter demonstrates it to some degree or other according to their circumstances and their life experience.

You meet a stranger in a pub and if he is a fellow Tim he is no longer a stranger. If he is a fellow CQNer he was already your pal even though you had never met before. This feeling of belonging to something greater than self… it ranges from a distant almost spiritual connection to the club and what it stands for, to attendance with fellow supporters at every game the team plays, home and away.

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to BeCeltic (as I saw it) last season when I signed up for an Overseas Season Ticket.  You can read more about the genesis (and CQN’s part in it) here on Celtic Underground.

The concept on which the OST is based for me anyway reflects the Celtic ethos which manifests itself in the way we support not only the team but each other both in the official charitable work carried out by the Celtic Foundation and as everyday supporters doing mad stuff like a huddle on top of Ben Nevis for heavens sake!!! In support of our own deserving causes, like the Kano Foundation, which is but just one great example of the caring heart of the support.

The impact such work can have on people’s lives can never be fully appreciated until you meet someone, as I did whilst sitting outside a pub in Spain,  overwhelmed by the difference it made to their wellbeing.

Buying an Overseas Season Ticket was almost an act of faith in that I did not know if I had internet connectivity at my Spanish destination to watch Celtic TV. Initially I did not, but “God works” etc and a charitable neighbour gave me WiFi access that enabled me to watch ALL games home and away on TV, via connecting HDMI cable to the laptop, from the comfort of my flat overlooking the beach. (Hence the term life is a beach).

Even better, I had the option of watching games not televised by Sky or ESPN in local bars via WiFi on my mobile phone if the wife dragged me out for lunch in game time. (Bad stuff happens to good guys too you know).

Not all performances were great but both 4-3 victories over Aberdeen and Dundee Utd in the Scottish Cup were truly memorable. Luckily I returned home in time to attend the title winning game v ICT using one of my 4 OST match day tickets, which this season has become FIVE along with a £50 price reduction.

I was also very pleased to get a letter from the Celtic Foundation saying that my seat had been used in my absence by local organisations and as a Calton man I was delighted to see folk from organisations in my old stomping ground amongst the beneficiaries.

Personally I see last season’s OST initiative as simply another indication, along with the recent appointment of a Supporter Liaison and Service Officer, that progress is being made in an ongoing process of bringing the Celtic support even closer together using the wonderful communication tools we now have. I find that something to be excited about as a force for spreading good in a world where ethics (which is derived from ethos) seem to have been forgotten.

But lofty thoughts apart J : At  a very practical level the OST is a very good value for money way, especially at £250 for a Season Ticket with the ability to view all games on Celtic TV and attend up to five games when at home, given due notice, of not only being a Celtic supporter but of sharing the load of supporting Celtic across the full spectrum of the support wherever we are. From the Auldheids with grey or no hair to the younger gentlemen with too much and the Celtic ladies of all ages whom I find are even more passionate in their support (if you met my sister you would know what I mean).

So I have already renewed and if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford as well as able to make full or partial use of an OST, I would encourage you to do so via BeCeltic overseas season ticket.”

With fans like Auldheid, we’re in good hands. Trying hard to insist I’m not worried about preseason games……

There was a CQNer on here a while ago that lived there, round about the time f be Aalburgs games, hopefully he reads this.

I’m booked up for a few places via airbnb.com next week, have you used it before? I’ve no worries but would be good to hear if anybody else has used it. I think it’s brilliant from what I’ve seen.

Not seen much of Harris apart for the cup semi final when he started to run the game against a tiring and shell shocked Falkirk.

I think we have maybe fallen into the trap of expecting someone like Aiden to be produced every year by the youth system and walking into the first team. It’s not gonna happen. I think the only place it might do is Barcelona and I remember reading somewhere they set up their current structure in 93.

Yes I’ve used it once before. The missus was kind enough to buy flights for me and her to New York for my birthday and we stayed in Brooklyn for a week. Great location and about a third of the price of a hotel.

Can anyone out there explain to me the incremental change in Celtic’s share allocation changes over one year or do I have to ask on other Celtic Blogs?

There are 27, 000 Celtic share-holders. So far canamalar1 has around 50 pledges to join his proposal. Quite a bit off 35%. ;) It’s even a bit off the 100 target.

Sooooo……It is important anybody with shares joins to this group. Every single person who does will help considerably.

I see there’s a new Celtic strip out. Apart from the extreme ghastliness of the design I was surprised to see that it now sells also in “extra medium”. Must be for all you CQN’rs.

  7. Thank God the pre season tour is over and we can stop griping about meaningless friendly results and resume griping about games that count.

I have to rack my tiny brain to come up with an extensive lists of positives, especially as I come from an era when we thrashed the likes of Manchester United who had a smattering of the 1966 World Cup winners and George Best in the side.

Match fitness I suppose after the break.

A couple of youngsters showing promise and ensuring that when called upon they can hold their end up alongside some regulars.

Rogic who will undubitqlly be a future star.

Sammi who seems to have retained his God like qualities.

Sure there are a few issues and I hope Neil and Johan work them out before we play the next qualification round. In fact I’m sure they will.

Otherwise I am disappointed that the likes of Dyalan and James F have not kicked on. Sure they have some nice touches but they both seem to pack the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck and turn it around. A trait enjoyed by the Greek Adonis and the sadly departed VW.

So has the 12 million already been spent on the newcomers and improved comtracts, or can we anticipate a marquee signing? Your guess is as good as mine.

Here’s to Wednesday and the first win of the season. I hope it’s a thrashing that puts the return at CP beyond any doubt.

My point is neither would be a starter, unless, the injuries got worse.

However, put yourself in the position that we are playing a Steau Bucharest type team in 3 rd stage of Qualifiers.

We lost 2v1 away, and we are up 1 nil at home with 20 to go and Ledley / Brown / Kayal etc get injured, who do we bring on.

In those circumstances, I would rather an experienced player than a promising maybe.

I realise this is very short term, but, the above scenario isn’t totally unrealistic.

So any suggestions on how to destroy the hun ascendancy infrastructure that is being reborn? The one that done Scottish clubs out of at least 22 trophies fairly and has done irreparable damage to Scottish football in a bigoted effort to obliterate the history of Jock Stein. Unless a New Firm thing is your thing of course.

Ha, I was introduced to it a few weeks ago, since booked places to stay in Miami and Brooklyn, your right much better deal than hotels. I love the look of where we are going, but there’s a wee bit of doubt about the person your renting off. Yeah that was a little concern of mine, we got a really good deal on out apartment because it was being redecorated so there was no photos. The girl/lady that was renting the apartment had at least half a dozen good reviews which put my mind at rest. To be honest the amount of time we actually spent there it wouldn’t have really mattered.

  18. Good evening CQN.

Joe Ledley is the best footballer at Celtic currently, he reads the game extremely well, keeps it simple, but effective and scores a few per season, he must be one of the first names on the team sheet. How many games did he miss last season? Not many from my, poor, recollection.

A small caveat to that is if Adam Matthews comes back from injury and can rediscover his form and how he was progressing he will soon over take Joe.

Put the pre season behind us, we will forget it soon enough, beat Cliftonville comprehensively and onwards to the new season.

  19. Joe Fillippis haircut – totally agree about tried and trusted in defence – I am currently trying to reassure myself that the long list of defeats and the nature of them in the friendlies will get the boys geed up but that could change early in the game with efe style cock-ups. Not to mention the fact they’re good players.

Now I have to take some cognisance of what is reported in in the press because its not if Neil Lennon is in the habit of giving interviews to footballing blogs. So it somewhat perturbs me to read him quoted today comments of which reading between the lines leads me to believe there is a severe lack of communication between himself and the powers to be.

It is the case that the plc part of the company is now the tail wagging the dog.

It appears to me that the manager has no input as to who is bought and sold and is now having players foisted upon him not of his choosing. I firmly believe that the scouting part of the company now reports directly to the commercial department on the possible future value of their recommendations and the players deemed to be worth the risk are given to the footballing department wether they approve of them or not.

It also appears to me that Plc have cashed in their Champions League Insurance policy and part of the £12m will only be released to the manager on qualification for the group stages of the Champions League

  25. CowieBhoy, haven’t seen enough of Harris yet, but he certainly has potential, maybe after another season. I don’t really think Macky-Steven is any better than what we have, and I’m not very disappointed to loose Russell, Stokes will step up, IMO.

Yeah that was my first visit to NYC and after speaking to a few friends that had been before hotels seemed like a bit of a waste.

I work in bars and restaurants so a lot of my days were planned around that sort of thing and the usual tourist things. Couple of my favourite places to eat were spotted pig in Chelsea and there a seafood market in Chelsea market called lobster place (I think). Lobster rolls and sushi were amazing and the high line is less than a block away. So grab something there for a takeaway lunch and sit in the sun.

Drinks wise I went to some amazing cocktails bars but I don’t know if that’s what you’re after. Dead rabbit, attaboy and Raines law room are firmly in the top 5 of my fav bars.
