Admiration for both Southend and Henrik

146

The business between Southend United and Henrik Larsson has been fascinating and reflects well on both of them.  After a run of six defeats, Kevin Bond resigned as Southend manager six weeks ago.  Since then the third tier club have resisted the greatest urge in football – appointing a manager.  They sit second bottom of the table, above only Bolton, who are on minus 8 points following administration.

Speaking to Henrik was an outrageously ambitious play for a club that looks destined for the bottom tier of English football.  They wanted Henrik, but not at any cost, they wanted him to have the necessary support to be a success in the job.

That support included recruiting someone with a knowledge of their league to act as chief scout.  Henrik’s former Celtic team-mate, Tommy Johnson, agreed to be that man, but with contracts all in place and Larsson set to fly in with Johan Mjallby as his assistant, Johnson had a last minute change of mind.

Lots of managers and clubs would proceed as planned and hope to recruit a suitable head of recruitment at a later date, but Southend chairman, Ron Martin and Henrik believed this part of their jigsaw was critically important and without it the picture would not work.

Feeling betrayed, Henrik insisted Martin did not up his offer to Johnson and they agreed not to conclude contracts.

Having waited during summer weeks for a managerial appointment, I cannot imagine how Southend fans are coping.  Without a permanent manager, the club is rudderless and no recovery is likely, but you have to admire Southend.  Better to wait and get it right, even now, seven points adrift from safety, than plough straight into a bad appointment.

But still, can you imagine if it was Celtic sitting on the pot for this time?  They will probably go down, but I hope the delay works out in the long term for Southend.

Point taken about Ryan’s nickname. Even though I never for one second meant it to come across as anything other than a play on words due to his surname, I’ll refrain from now on. In exchange, though, you must cpontinue to send your game by votes for our best 3 performers……. a wee relaunch post will be out tonight… ;-)

    SFTB,

He is a left back, Boli is no, in fact Boli is a poor attacking midfielder and is still preferred over more experienced players for the left back position in both Taylor and Hayes. Hayes is preferred over him, no one has been hung, however if he did there is a cover up, which is obviously more appealing to your sense of justice.

As for should players be charged, of course they else you are suggesting players should be treated differently to supporters? The club do not tolerate it from supporters, they back the police without question and are happy to ban supporters on the word of police for sectarian offenses. They do not suggest second chances or education.

  11. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION on 18TH OCTOBER 2019 9:18 AM

Taylor’s absence from the first 11, this one is easy, recent rumor has it Taylor called the Griff fenian b’stard during a training session, the clubs lack of provided opportunity appear to support the rumor as true and if this is the case he should be charged with sectarian abuse and sold at first opportunity

    wow

  12. I find that Taylor rumor hard to believe. He was inured early season & Cup Tied for League Cup where you would normally expect him to make a debut. My take is that Lenny wants to give Boli a good run of games & sees Jonny as a reliable back up.

If by any chance it is true I would concur with Ron & boot him out, There are plenty of Griff rumors out there as well so maybe just a case of holding off & see what happens.

  13. Corkcelt – totally agree.

If it has happened, the club are in a conundrum, if they make it public and put him on transfer list clubs will low ball us.

If it has happened I would fine him big time and then move him on, say nothing to anyone, but I can see how that would upset supporters. If supporters get jailed etc then why should these guys be insulated from all that.

Having played football at different levels I doubt if it’s true, there is normally a good team spirit. Sure there is rivalry because everyone wants in that team and things do get heated but I have never heard of any player saying something like that. Again they will slag each other, argue and fight but I have never heard that.

I think it’s a load of old tosh.

Same as this post of mine😂

Ah well, that was a low key day to finish the Holiday. Another stunning day, and just watched a lovely sunset from the apartment balcony. Nothing to do now, but finish the beers (somebody has to :-)). Oh and pack, we have a taxi booked at 9 tomorrow morning to the airport, and all being well should be home by teatime tomorrow. Might have to listen to “open all mikes” on the car radio, to find out about the game. Oh heaven spare us a Livi goal… don’t want to hear a shortie commentator squealing with excitement when I’m trapped in the car.

    🍀⚽️

  15. HAG – A Livi goal? It’s Ross County we are playing😂

  16. Arlene Foster is touring the countryside in her Chauffeur driven car.

Suddenly a cow jumps out into the road. They hit it full on and the car comes to a stop.

Arlene in her usual charming manner, says to the chauffeur…….

“You get out and check – you were driving.”

The chauffeur gets out, checks and reports that the animal is dead. “You were driving; go and tell the farmer,” says Arlene

Five hours later the chauffeur returns totally plastered, his hair ruffled and with a big grin on his face.

“My God, what happened to you?” asks Arlene .

The chauffeur replies: “When I got there, the farmer opened his best bottle of malt whisky, the wife gave me a slap-up meal and the daughter made love to me.”

“What on earth did you say?” asks Arlene

“I knocked on the door and when it was answered, I said to them….

“I’m Arlene Foster’s chauffeur and I’ve just killed the cow.”

  17. SAINT STIVS,

That’s the first Record article I have read in years. Imo, Bobby Murdoch is the finest Celtic player ever, certainly the finest I have had the privilege to watch.

  18. Canamalar

The one point of my post that you did not address was the most important one.

Is there any reliability or truth to the rumour?

And, if so, what were the circumstances? Joking or aggressive? Out of the blue or whilst in pain from a tackle.

These are important cirrcumstantial considerations. It is not in the same ball park as a supporter shouting “sectarian” abuse from the terraces with little provocation.

Too much of modern Scotland is about banning, closing, stopping, no platform etc; It is the same quick fix mentality that gave rise to the OBaF Act? WHy not help people rise above their bigotries and prejudice via education rather than risk embedding them in resentent by sacking a player or banning a supporter.

Tosh McKinlay fought with Henrik Larsson. He was not the first or last to fight at training with a colleague.

The more serious physical assaults do not need to lead to the ending of a career with a club, then neither should the less serious matter of name calling.

We pride ourselves in having taken many players who were childhood or teenage Rangers supporters and many of our best had that in their background. If twitter were around would we have ended our interest in a Dalglish, McGrain, or Brown if they had an FTP on their twitter account as a 16 year old? How would we have dealt with that old joke about the RC Celtic player who complained to his team mate that the crowd was calling him a Fenian Bassa only to be told by the non-RC colleague that “At least you are one- they’re calling me that too!”. Which one of that pair should get sacked or transferrred?

  19. glendalystonsils on

The Greg Taylor ‘rumour’ has jolted me out of lurking to comment. If it was said at all (which I seriously doubt) it might have been jokingly between him and Griff . Proper banter , not hun type ‘banter’.

Can you imagine a Catholic player at Sevco calling one of them a dirty orange bassa and meaning it?

Naw , me neither. If Taylor was a bigot why would he sign for Celtic. The answer to that question BTW is not money .

  20. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    SFTB,

Just like you only addressed one point in the original post. As for reliability I did say it was rumor thought that might be a clue. As I said if true he should be treated in exactly the same manner as any supporter is treated.

But you have made quite a few telling statements regards your own standards and support of double standards. Your vignettes are poor, you think calling someone a fenian b’stard is just banter when players do it but supporters never have an excuse it can only be vile sectarianism yet there are loads of excuses for players aye well done. Then a wee tangent onto violence just to obfuscate a bit more.

It’s either zero tolerance or it’s not, tolerate it from players but not supporters is not something I can support you with.

I did respond to more than one point in your original post- I even numbered them.

I cannot support zero tolerance in this situation. We would all have fallen foul of that at some time.

Also, if it is an unsubstantiated rumour- it can only weaken the point to name the players involved. The ethical dilemma could have been discussed without tarring players unjustly.

Do you remember when Scott Brown was alleged to have a King Billy tattoo?
