Ange, Martin and Brendan. Breaking new ground and good endings

241

If you were around 20 years ago, you lived through an era when every time a manager in the English topflight came under pressure, we had to endure speculation Martin O’Neill would leave us to move back south.  We even had the Tory party leader urge Liverpool to appoint Martin!

These days., Ange Postecoglou’s name is sure to appear on betting lists whenever a vacancy appears.  The issue is also put into the public domain on occasions like yesterday, when Ange is back home in Australia and was asked about moving to England.

Ange responded correctly, “Celtic play in front of 60,000 people, we have the opportunity to win trophies and we’re in the Champions League. It’s a massive football club.”  I expect it would take an incredible offer to move him now (maybe something like Liverpool), specifically because he thinks – he thinks, not I think – he has only scratched the surface of what he could achieve at Celtic.

There is a glass ceiling here.  We are never going to win the Champions League without huge environment change.  It is possible, however, to go deeper into the tournament that we have gone before in its current guise.

Martin’s name will forever be sacred around these parts.  While Wim Jansen won the league for Celtic two years before he arrived, it was Martin who truly put us back on top.  Since then, we have never been the underdogs we were even at the start of this first season.  Five years into the job, Martin’s race was run at Celtic in every respect and he left for personal reasons, without an enticement from elsewhere.

There are two requirements necessary to achieve enduring legendary status: break new ground and when you leave, do so on good terms.  Four years ago, Brendan Rodgers had us eating out of his hand, but his abrupt departure means he would not be considered appropriate to make the Paradise Windfall Draw these days.

If Ange remains as successful as he is, someone will eventually put a £10m/yr offer in front of him and that will be the end of this era.  He has work to do to justify anything like that, as he said on Australian TV yesterday, “I keep saying to [the players]if they do what they do well then all this other stuff takes care of itself, whatever their ambitions or my ambitions may be.”  Within a couple of years, I believe Ange can do something very special here.

Martin is at Dalziel Park Hotel, Motherwell, this Saturday, 24 September, for a brunch, a Q&A and photos.  Tickets are £50 and available from Alan, 07970 716422.  Kick off 11:45am.

  1. It’s not all about turnover

“Manchester United have announced a net loss of £115.5m for the 2021-22 season even though revenues rose by 18% to £583.2m.

Figures released incorporating the end of their financial year in June showed losses rose by £23.3m compared to 2021.

The club’s debt also went up, from £419.5m in 2021 to £514.9m this year – an increase of more than 22%.”

So debt not far short of annual revenue, FFP ?

    Must be some mistake.

After all Scotland has moved beyond sectarianism.

Well at least according to a Tory cooncillor and the cult members on here it has.

  3. Not getting into the debate about McGinn as no one from either side will change their opinion.

I was speaking to Villan yesterday who said we could take him away for free as he hasn’t kicked a ball for them for over a year, was surprised as thought that he was getting good reviews

Such is the growth of the Vinyl market then of course some BigWig would try and make something from it, probably in the short term though, por cierto

  5. Before McGinn’s goal last night I thought he was very very wasteful all over the park, but, especially in the final third, not for me anymore, nor I would think Angeball! por cierto

  6. I cannot be the only one on here who finds it strange that a poster can find the Oath given and signed by King Charles, at St James Palace, (preserve the Settlement of the true Protestant Religion…..in Scotland etc,) meaningless, and yet rarely fails to mention sectarianism in every other post. Strangely strange and yet oddly normal. Is it possible that there are more than one of him? Or is cognitive dissonance making a comeback on Paul’s Sainted blog?

  7. Bit of good news

Just heard from tui they’re paying £350 each for the 5 hour flight delay returning from Mallorca

I find it strange Cmac,Ernie for e.g,even after watching the last 2 weeks of Big Kult ceremonies reaffirming it as the source of anti Catholicism on these isles that anti Catholicism is sourced in Scotland.wrong

  10. an tearmann

To be fair to Ernie I think he has always stated that ‘sectarianism’ in Scotland predates Act of Settlement/Union etc, which is accurate in the sense that the John Knox Reformation took place around 1560, and was written into Scots Law. But that is not the end of the story, as, and I have pointed out before, the Stewarts, from Mary onwards were not always in synch with the Calvinist reformers, neither was Cromwell funnily enough, and it was the coup d’etat of 1688-9, (or Glorious Revolution according to Lindsay Hoyle in King Charles presence) which under Billy which re-established the primacy (supremacy) of the Presbytarian Church in Scotland in 1690, the Act of Succession 1701 ruling out a Catholic monarch, and its’ subsequent incorporation, (after Billy’s death) into the Act of Union itself 1707. What that is not, in 2022, is meaningless. And when you think about it how can we expect the SNP to restrict the actions of the Orange Lodge in Scotland when Nicola Sturgeon followed Charles in signing the same oath on the same day? Rooted in 1560, re-established 1690, institutionalised in 1701 and 1707. And confirmed in 2022. Nothing meaningless about that.

  11. Celtic Mac

As far as I understand it he act of settlement has been amended so that the first born whether male or female is the heir and that the monarch is free to marry a Catholic. Why it can’t be further amended I have no Idea. In this mainly secular society most people aren’t interested.

  12. Mad Hatter,

Whichever.Guaranteed games,or EPL wages.Something that Rogers nor PL would give.Quite rightly. No idea how that affects the true facts of the matter.

Mc Ginn could have chose Celtic. He chose Villa.

    I know the P L haters don’t like it.At least you tried.

  13. THE QUIET MAN

So we could have had Queen Anne 2 and not king Charles 3 had the amendment been done sooner.

That makes no sense. Charles was born before Anne.

  14. Knox returned to Scotland in 1559, and he again deployed his formidable preaching skills to increase Protestant militancy. Within days of his arrival, he preached a violent sermon at Perth against Catholic “idolatry,” causing a riot. Altars were demolished, images smashed, and religious houses destroyed.

In June, Knox was elected the minister of the Edinburgh church, where he continued to exhort and inspire. In his sermons, Knox typically spent half an hour calmly exegeting a biblical passage. Then as he applied the text to the Scottish situation, he became “active and vigorous” and would violently pound the pulpit. Said one note taker, “he made me so to grew [quake] and tremble, that I could not hold pen to write.”

The Lords of the Congregation militarily occupied more and more cities, so that finally, in the 1560 Treaty of Berwick, the English and French agreed to leave Scotland. (The English, now under Protestant Elizabeth I, had come to the aid of the Protestant Scots; the French were aiding the Catholic party). The future of Protestantism in Scotland was assured.

The Parliament ordered Knox and five colleagues to write a Confession of Faith, the First Book of Discipline, and The Book of Common Order—all of which cast the Protestant faith of Scotland in a distinctly Calvinist and Presbyterian mode.

Knox finished out his years as preacher of the Edinburgh church, helping shape the developing Protestantism in Scotland. During this time, he wrote his History of the Reformation of Religion in Scotland.

Though he remains a paradox to many, Knox was clearly a man of great courage: one man standing before Knox’s open grave said, “Here lies a man who neither flattered nor feared any flesh.” Knox’s legacy is large: his spiritual progeny includes some 750,000 Presbyterians in Scotland, 3 million in the United States, and many millions more worldwide.

  15. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

“Altars were demolished, images smashed, and religious houses destroyed”

In other words they were intolerant to Catholicism.

I’m glad I didn’t live in Scotland 450 years ago.

PL little stratagem has been written up by many to suggest that we matched the wages on offer to JMcG from AV — the positive write up of this arrangement has stretched all the way to CQN on occasion.

However the headline is not supported by the article and PL was trying to be cute:

While covering his other cheek with the support / showy attempts to get things done.

That he would try and do such bare faced un-truth shows his mettle better than any jibe I can come up with.
