Ange, Martin and Brendan. Breaking new ground and good endings

241

If you were around 20 years ago, you lived through an era when every time a manager in the English topflight came under pressure, we had to endure speculation Martin O’Neill would leave us to move back south.  We even had the Tory party leader urge Liverpool to appoint Martin!

These days., Ange Postecoglou’s name is sure to appear on betting lists whenever a vacancy appears.  The issue is also put into the public domain on occasions like yesterday, when Ange is back home in Australia and was asked about moving to England.

Ange responded correctly, “Celtic play in front of 60,000 people, we have the opportunity to win trophies and we’re in the Champions League. It’s a massive football club.”  I expect it would take an incredible offer to move him now (maybe something like Liverpool), specifically because he thinks – he thinks, not I think – he has only scratched the surface of what he could achieve at Celtic.

There is a glass ceiling here.  We are never going to win the Champions League without huge environment change.  It is possible, however, to go deeper into the tournament that we have gone before in its current guise.

Martin’s name will forever be sacred around these parts.  While Wim Jansen won the league for Celtic two years before he arrived, it was Martin who truly put us back on top.  Since then, we have never been the underdogs we were even at the start of this first season.  Five years into the job, Martin’s race was run at Celtic in every respect and he left for personal reasons, without an enticement from elsewhere.

There are two requirements necessary to achieve enduring legendary status: break new ground and when you leave, do so on good terms.  Four years ago, Brendan Rodgers had us eating out of his hand, but his abrupt departure means he would not be considered appropriate to make the Paradise Windfall Draw these days.

If Ange remains as successful as he is, someone will eventually put a £10m/yr offer in front of him and that will be the end of this era.  He has work to do to justify anything like that, as he said on Australian TV yesterday, “I keep saying to [the players]if they do what they do well then all this other stuff takes care of itself, whatever their ambitions or my ambitions may be.”  Within a couple of years, I believe Ange can do something very special here.

Martin is at Dalziel Park Hotel, Motherwell, this Saturday, 24 September, for a brunch, a Q&A and photos.  Tickets are £50 and available from Alan, 07970 716422.  Kick off 11:45am.

Ah, the wonders of the internet. You’re now an expert on Scottish independence. Not so long ago you’d never heard of Arthur Donaldson, and then doubled down on your ignorance by claiming he was an obscure and irrelevant figure within the independence movement.

  2. So, who is going to tell them?

Established in 2018, Call It Out campaigns against anti-Irish racism and anti-Catholic bigotry.

‘We are a coordinated voice for the multi-generational Irish community in Scotland – highlighting prejudice, challenging stereotypes, and interacting with the Scottish government at all levels as an effective representative of the Irish diaspora.’

  3. Yip, Mark McNally it is.

“I was a big Celtic fan as a kid and it was a dream to be able to play for my boyhood heroes — no one can take it away from me. Yes, it would have been nice to have played when there was a bit more stability but it wasn’t to be and I’m just grateful for what was.”

How many “Call it out” meetings/protests have you attended Ernie?

I helped out with the silent protests outside of St Mary’s and St Alphonsus as the OO went past.

Now you wouldn’t be using that organisation as a cheap point-scoring exercise on the blog, you would never do such a thing

  5. Who would win in a fight between Mad Mitch and Mad Mitch?

    Harvey the invisible rabbit

BTW There is more of a chance that Harvey will be attending CQN corner

Are you the eejit that campaigned against the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012 and then voted for the SNP, who went on to do do everything in their power to prevent the Act being repealed?

Dear oh dear. Can’t believe you’re still falling for that one. Just how gullible are you? Got to be the longest pisstake in the history of CQN.

  10. Paul67,

I think Ange is gonnae do something really Special too for this Club.

I just hope Callum isnae overplayed by SC in these Scotland games, he is an incredible Capitano for Celtic already.

Somehow I think Ange would knock back £20M+, £30M+, a year this year and next.

We have an Elite Manager methinks, Ange is a real Leader in so many ways. Why?

He is just being so Honest!!!!!

I think it’s obvious who has hijacked MadMitch’s user name, he really really doesn’t like him,

Its well out of order, a definite punch below the belt,

  13. So taking a wee break during the internationals and headed over to Italy.

First time in a long time in the north. Lovely day in Milan bringing back a memory or two of CL games and some good times. The time we lost in the final game but still qualified ahead of Shakhtar and Benfica. We couldn’t get a point even although Milan had already secured first place. A happy ending though. Similar in Madrid would do this year. We lost to Barca in the last 16 that season. I hope and believe we could go better this year. The World Cup occupying the minds of all the worlds finest until the end of December can work for us. Our guys invovled will all be home early with points to prove I reckon.

Anyway I love all parts of Italy, it’s a special country and very diverse. I enjoy the company and friendship of lots of Italians. I met one tonight who was a total knob however. A ticket collector on the train from Milan to the beautiful Stresa. We were rushing with luggage to catch the train and forgot to activate the ticket which we had just purchased. Of course they do expect these to be activated. We jumped on he train and our £20 tickets suddenly became illegal documents. Documents which meant the smiling assassin of a ticket collector grabbed his chance and charged us a £90 fine for this crime. Annoying in the extreme as there is no way we could reuse these or in any way be trying to buck the system. For £20 it was hardly worth it. We were obv tourists and obv ignorant of the rules. We had literally just purchased a ticket which had an expiry date of 5 hours hence.

His laughing face completely without empathy was hideous. A sad little man but a tale which reminded me that we get such small men who are so driven by their Javert type positions in all countries across all parts of the world.

My wife even said I bet you have some on CQN ?? I couldn’t possibly comment on that was my response.

Hope everyone is enjoying the International break. We are still on top of the league looking down on the Rangers.

    Interview with Bernie (Jan 2007)

I played all my boys club football with Celtic boys club, and have my late Father Joe to thank for driving me from Denny all that time. I signed s form at the age 14, then provisional for one year being farmed out to Boness. In 1977 I was ‘called up’ and spent the next two years as a full time pro. Celtic Football Club is much more than a football Club. Its a family, and that family extends to all who embrace it. I had the honour to play with, and rub shoulders with people like Tommy Burns,Bobby Lennox,Charlie Nicholas, and play under Jock Stein, Billy McNeill and John Clark.

Such is the culture at Celtic, You not only get an education in football, you gain an education in life. I was a player who was involved for 5 or 6 years and never ‘made it’ but always felt apart of it.And I will always be thankfull that I was given the chance to live my dream. I can honestly say with my hand on my heart, that I never once walked through the front door in Kerrydale Street when I never had

‘butterflies’ It evokes that much emotion! Willie Wallace ( Lisbon Lion ) signed me in 1982 for an Australian National League side and I have been in Sydney ever since, finishing my professional career in 1994.

  16. Paul 67,

“Four years ago, Brendan Rodgers had us eating out of his hand, but his abrupt departure means he would not be considered appropriate to make the Paradise Windfall Draw these days.”

    ———–

    Are we really that shallow?

His abrupt departure enhanced our balance sheet . Prolonged departure would have benefited nobody.

I for one will always be grateful for Brendan’ s tenture.

Interesting stuff — textbook method of how not to deliver a ferry / revitalise an industry.

The Holyrood angle / Auld Reekie civil service element is particularly bad.

More money seems to deliver a worse service.

    Only half the story.

Calmac and its campervans is the stuff of Monty Python.

  18. Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson says the Ibrox club will only get close to earning a touted £40m bonus from reaching the Champions League group stage if they perform really well and reach the last eight, with £30m being a more realistic figure. (Rangers Review)

Rangers were 24 hours away from having to shut Ibrox Stadium when safety issues were flagged up in 2015 after part of the cladding on the roof became detached during a match against Dumbarton, managing director Stewart Robertson has revealed as he stressed how heavily the club has invested in the arena since.
