Anti-Celtic story parcelled up by Police spokesman

1077

The Daily Record won credit for scooping the off-field story of the week, multiple investigations into singing by Celtic fans, but others are beginning to ask who gave the newspaper details of a police investigation.

The stories broke in an unusual manner, with SFA referee and policeman, Eddie Smith, named as the person who reported Celtic fans to Uefa and the SPL.  The officer made what looks like an inexplicable decision after some confrontations inside Celtic Park, without mentioning a word of his concerns to the Celtic security people during the game – the normal procedure for such incidents.

Smith, who has Celtic supporting credentials, was named, providing the perfect foil to deflect accusations that this was some sort of Masonic conspiracy, which it was not.  The entire episode is a classic internecine dispute among Celtic supporters, but with the comments made to Uefa, the story was parcelled up for the Record by a Strathclyde Police spokesman.

The Daily Record reported, “A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said: “For Eddie [Smith] to speak to the delegate after the match is nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, it is standard practice””. This is completely irrelevant.

Celtic’s retort in the same article got to the heart of the issue – why the police are speaking to Uefa and the media but not speaking to the club: “This is quite unprecedented as no issues were raised to the club during the match and the police didn’t inform us directly about their concerns.”

Control over media communications from Strathclyde Police falls to Director of Communications, Rob Shorthouse, (pictured on the left).  Shorthouse, whose own favourite team have taken a reputational battering from Uefa in recent seasons, despite silence from the police, should be concerned that the force have given newspapers material for three days of screaming headlines instead of addressing the key concern about departure from established procedure.  This has only inflamed a volatile situation between Celtic fans and officers on the ground. Shorthouse, who held a similar position at the SFA until two years ago, will be familiar with the sensitivities of football issues.

Perhaps a Freedom of Information request will reveal who leaked a story that laid out details which reflected so badly on Celtic.  All we want is equal treatment, as a former chairman once commented.

Think UEFA have good reason to be worried about the way ahead.

The big Euro clubs are now openly flexing their muscles. They ain’t going to accept anything less than their demands.

There can only be one winner in this fight and it will be the clubs.

  4. Mullet & Co,

You sound like the voice of reason. But you don’t make any reasoned sense to me. I am on record here as saying that we should not be singing pro-IRA chants at Celtic Park. But, the point is not whether or not I am offended by it or whether the Club has asked that it stopped. The Scottish Establishment, or that part of it of a rangers persuasion, have decided that they are going to punish Celtic by any means they can. Making law of what is offensive is a nonsense but it is the only way they can get at us. Every other party in Scotland has attacked this bill and rightly. That is it supported by the likes of MacAskill and Campbell Corrigan, who were effusive in their praise of the sectarian bile that poured forth from the rangers “support” after the League Cup Final has ended any respect I might have for their opinion.

As for those who think ‘they’ will come after us again, there would be a resistance to any further criminilisation as it would not be reasonable.

What else could be criminialised? The Fields? Let the People Sing? A reasonable person would not allow this. All that is being asked is to stop the IRA stuff.

    —————————————————————————————————————————

that is exactly what they will do. chanting against the crown. offensive behavior timmy. how about the celtic song ? we dont care what the animals say ? hey thats offensive timmy. book them dano

this is the point that is lost in all of this. the rebel stuff, can’t be dropped into the sectarian argument because, well they are not. they are just offensive ( subjective by the way ). they offend some, just in the same manner that the fields does, and the celtic song. illegal they are not. out of place at celtic park ? some say yae, some say nay.

this entire step form the government, police and the crown office, will fall flat, otherwise the police will be able to lift anyone on their personal dislikes. that is uneforcable. the law has to act without emotion or prejudices.

  6. goggybhoy- thanks .

badabing-I thought the film was brilliant, very emotive, there is a scene where Bobby Sands & a priest have a potent discussion about the hunger strike,

It is time for CST, CSA and GB to get together and agree what we will sing. Draw a line in the sand and defend that. We must stop them chopping away at our ability to support our team.

Club should back this stance and do so vocally.

    ————————-

I suggested that last night but with a twist of saying what we will not sing but before we do anything, challenge the Rangers support to take the same steps.

That way the focus goes back on them to say what is unacceptable to them. The advantages of self policing whilst seeking equality of treatment are self evident.

I think the CSA had already mentioned our support getting togther, but the wee twist could end this nonsense once and for all, without daft legislation.

  12. Heard Mr Corrigan on snyde, going on about pro IRA songs.

He later mentioned hate filled songs. The only time I hear hate filled songs at CP is when we get a visit from THEM.

  13. Let’s not forget DJ, when people ‘phoned in to say that they found the racist abuse of Didier Agathe, especially at corners, his response? ‘ They’re (rangers fans) making that Ooh-Ooh noise to put the player off when he’s taking a corner kick.

Whatever happens the laptop loyal will blame Celtic, supporters up and down the country make offensive chants, Alex Ferguson makes it very clear that he thinks that Man Utd supporters should refrain from abusing Arsene Wenger, they don’t. Any reports to UEFA?

I think Platini’s FFP thing will effectivly split the football world in two, the big clubs will not relinquish what they have, hence their demands for total change allowing them to keep what they have or are indebited.

Money is talking louder than ever these days and Celtic have money, or the potential to make money, the big clubs know that, through TV we are as big a draw than anybody else due to our WW fanbase, and as I have been saying for some time now, people do not invest serious money chasing a rainbow, as far as I can gather licences are being negoatied WW as we type.

It will happen, though I must admit it’s taking longer than I thought it would, about two years behind schedule as I understand.

What I learned from attending the FAC meeting on Saturday, which the huns gate crashed is that they are unwilling or incapable of differentiating between what is acceptable or not.

They genuinely feel they should be allowed to sing what they want.

To hold that position is to allow fear to stop us doing what we think is right. If we do the right thing because it is right we have nothing to fear. 120 odd years and still going in spite of anything they have thrown at us and likely to be around a lot longer than them by the look o things.
