Ashely hates conflict

725

We’ve often talked about the only real danger to a football club: internecine strife:

Internecine, def: pertaining to conflict within a group, mutually destructive.

In football, your enemies can’t inflict permanent harm, that can only come from within.  This morning’s media cover threats from Sevconians to boycott (clearly in homage to Irish tradition) club/company products.  More power to their elbows, they should boycott every piece of tat Newco’s disparate IP rights holders churn out, apart from the occasional novelty duck.

Here’s the thing, before you turn the tanks inwards, you’d better be sure you’ve got the ‘What happens next?’ question sorted.  If you don’t, you’re playing a real life version of Lemmings.

Threatening Mike Ashley?  Aye sure, that’ll work, knock yourself out.  I’m sure Ashley’s known as a big pussy, he hasn’t got the money to face down the malcontents, either.  I bet he’s already writing his capitulation letter, “Dear Sevconians, by noticing that I can’t handle conflict you’ve outsmarted me.  The game’s up.”

What was it Charles Green told John Brown he would do to Ibrox?  Hmmm.

Blame the SFA, SPL, BBC, Celtic, Her Majesty’s lawyers, the Daily Record and Raith Rovers but you need to be on the inside to wreak havoc like this.

Interesting front opened by the English Premier League today on the copycat use of pyrotechnics at football games.  “Someone could get killed”, said policing minister Damian Green.  You’re 20 years out of date, Mr Green.

Here’s the problem: it’s possible to discharge one of these devices in a crowded area without accepting the safety/reputational/fine consequences.  Enormously invasive searches of unconnected people would be required to prevent pyros being taken into a stadium which is just not possible, eradication requires everyone to decide not to participate.

The only practical method I can see of stopping the use of pyrotechnics in Scottish football is to give Sports Direct exclusive distribution rights.  Who’d buy them then?

    jackiemac, ipaddy,

I’ve been writing about Japanese football on various platforms for a while now, the level is extraordinary.

Would it surprise you to know with one game left to play in the J-league Naka is overwhelming favourite for player of the year, and will probably captain Yokohama F Marinos to their first title in nine years on Saturday.

At 35, I would say he is actually getting better. Genius

    TJ

Tommy have you been following the Japanese national team? They have had some incredible recent results drawing with Holland and beating Belgium (both in Europe). There are surely some good players over there for us. Without having seen much of him play I reckon Yuya Osako would be a good signing for us. 19 goals in J League…..3 goals in 5 games for Japan including a goal and an assist in the Holland game. There is another player (Kakatani?) but he has been linked with the really big European clubs (Arsenal, Dortmund etc.).

  14. I have to say the Groningen link up looks like it would be a fantastic deal….if we could find a way for it to work properly for both clubs.

We have had link ups before without much success. The Ujpest link up didn’t prove to be any use as they were not playing at a high enough standard to make it worthwhile loaning out our players (and they weren’t producing any players worth buying). Not sure what we are getting from the Santos Laguna link up either.

However, Groningen have a great reputation for bringing through players (Van Diyk, Bacuna, Adam Matsz, Marcus Berg, Luis Suarez, Dusan Tadic etc.)….would be great to think we could have first refusal on their players….but at the end of the day I guess they will also want to get as much as possible for players.

It would also be great to send young players to the Dutch League on loan. Chelsea have 5 or 6 players playing with Vitesse this season and they are in the top 3…..it’s obviously been pretty beneficial to Vitesse. There are definitely young players on the fringes of the first team who would benefit from playing regularly for 3-6 months at a high level (Rogic, Balde, Fridjohsson, Irvine, McGregor, Herron, George, Twardzik when he’s fit etc.). Now some of these probably wouldn’t be able to walk into the Grongingen team (they are 6th in the table) but a couple might.

This could be massive for us if we can figure out how to make it work.

  15. skyisalandfill c'mon wee Oscar on

jeez. Bjorn again’s record winning run even a makes it to R4 today programme.

Read all the Bobo stuff thru nightshift and while Bobo did not rip off the club or brak any part of his contract, it seems to me that it was a sad story in which both parties lost out.

I thought I once heard, and maybe it was just MSM flatulance, about Bobo getting an offer at Middlesburgh that was to all intents the same as his Celtic deal? I reckon that for his own career he should have moved on.

    Like I said, sad.

  17. Morning all from a still dry, still mild chilled Chilterns…

Not one to start the day on a negative but think this is worth saying….

The Palace – West Ham game was on Five Live last evening, I listened in for a bit – Barry Bannen seemed to have a good game btw, but to the point.

Yesterday morning I commented on the posts regarding OC vs NC and suggested the SFA should be robustly challenged on the Five-way agreement.

Now there were several posts with many pertinent points during the day, although I was lurking I didn’t find the time to expand on my views.

Yet there I was listening to Britain’s main Footballing Radio outlet….

Nigel Spackman was the pundit, his contributions included the best striker he’d ever played with…

Ian Rush – hard working, defended from the front but got the goals – fair enuff..

~ Beware the following is NOT for the squeamish ~

    Score from Ibrox – Newco 6 – 1 Forfar

Commentator – You played with some great strikers at Rangers…

    N. Spackman – Yes, McCoist, Hateley, Maurice Johnstone

Commentator – They seem to have a new one in Nicky Clark ….. blah, blah, blah

Now all those who read CQN will be well aware that Rangers Football Club is in liquidation.

Other Scottish Football fans as well as Celtic supporters will know facts.

And it’s oft quoted on here…

“Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth. M.Ghandi

But in my opinion – unless the lie is nailed the 1872 Continuation BS will become the default in Football.

  21. Not sure about this. Thought he was ‘tidy’ (lots of sideways and backward passes) in the Hearts game but no more than that. Then again, he was part of a standout midfield, so wouldn’t change it for Motherwell:

NIR BITON has been backed by former boss Guy Luzon to become Celtic’s next major star.

And the Standard Liege manager has even urged Parkhead counterpart Neil Lennon to build his new-look team around the midfield talents of the Israeli youngster.

With the Hoops now out of the Champions League qualification race, Lennon has admitted he’s ready to start rebuilding a fresh side with an eye on next term’s European assault.

Biton, signed for £700,000 in the summer from FC Ashdod, looks like having a big part to play.

The 22-year-old is being lined up to fill the yawning gap in the squad left by Victor Wanyama’s £12million switch to Southampton and he gave a glimpse of his undoubted potential with a terrific display in Sunday’s 7-0 Scottish Cup hammering of Hearts.

Coming hard on the heels of a positive show in the 4-1 destruction of Ross County in his previous start, Biton is settling into his new surroundings.

Luzon took a keen interest in both initial performances.

Before taking over at Liege in the summer, he was the coach of the Israel Under-21 side and shaped the rise in Biton’s career, taking him into his set-up, making him skipper and helping him to earn his six senior caps for the country.

The talented coach and former Israel international believes his protege is now ready to take the next step.

And he has no doubt Lennon could build his group around him and watch Biton become just as important to the team as the likes of Wanyama before following the Kenyan to bigger things.

Luzon told Record Sport: “I am absolutely sure that Nir will become the next star of Celtic.

“For this reason I am not in the slightest bit surprised he has managed to take his initial opportunities in the first team and make a good impression on people.

“If it is being said the Celtic manager is now looking to start building a new team for the future. Nir could be in it.

“It is not for me to tell any manager his job. It is not my business but what I can say is that Nir has all the talent and ability to have a team built around him or with him central in it.

“I was the manager of the Israel Under-21 team for three years and, from coming into the set-up for the first time, Nir quickly developed into our captain.

“It did not come as a surprise that he made the move to a big club such as Celtic and I’m sure this will prove to be a clever move for both player and club.

“Given time, I am positive he will develop into one of the best players at the club.

“I have seen that Celtic players have moved to clubs in England for big transfer fees after making a very good impression during their time in Scotland.

“That has also been down to their displays in the Champions League and I am sure Nir has the talent and ability to be playing at that level.

“At some time in the future he could go down that same path but that is not for now. Now is about making himself important to Celtic and it’s my opinion he is ready.”

Luzon’s confidence in Biton is built on two bases.

Firstly, he believes the youngster has all the attributes on the park to be a top-class operator.

Secondly, he’s seen a maturity within the kid way beyond his years. Luzon said: “Nir’s biggest asset is his intelligence.

“Not just as a football player, but in life in general.

“As a footballer he is very smart in terms of the way he plays the game.

“Nir has the quality to organise a midfield and his range of passing, long and short, is very good.

“He is comfortable keeping his positional discipline at the base of the midfield.

“But he is also capable of making quick passes into dangerous areas further up the pitch when his team are playing on the counter attack or when they are in charge of possession and deep in the territory of opponents.

“Off the pitch, his common sense is an asset, too. He is the ultimate professional with a fantastic attitude.

“Other things surrounding him do not interest him. It is all about the football.

“In modern football, it is important for younger players to have the right character.

“Myself and many other coaches and supporters have seen young players come into the game with talent but they are lost because of the wrong attitude or approach. Nir was never going to fall into that category. His character and approach is centred around being the best he can be as a player. Nothing else matters.”

Lennon will be looking to see how his signing “projects” develop over the coming months with the likes of Tom Rogic and Amido Balde still needing to find their feet.

But with Wanyama gone and Joe Ledley’s future in the balance due to the Welshman being out of contract next summer, the Celtic boss also needs a new face to emerge in the middle of the park to join Scott Brown and Charlie Mulgrew.

However, as far as Luzon is concerned, Lennon already came up with the solution for the future when he plundered Ashdod in August.

He added: “With his character, his professionalism, his attitude and his skills on the pitch, Nir can become one of the best at Celtic. If that happens, he will also become one of the best for Israel and I feel he has goals within him.”

It was unfortunate in the extreme what happened but what should not be forgotten it was MOM who engineered his whopping £28.000 p/w deal when he needed him.
