Barca will be no better prepared, how the news works

817

I don’t subscribe to the ‘Would rather face them with Messi’ world view.  I’ve seen Lionel Messi a couple of times, it’s a bit like standing atop the Eiffel Tower, a breath-taking experience, but I don’t need to visit Paris every month to reinforce the view.  Tomorrow will be an almighty challenge against one of the sport’s all-time great teams.  Having pushed Barcelona to their absolute limits twice last season, we have no right to expect a second consecutive New Firm victory, but this is a home game at Celtic Park, we hope for a win.

The omission of Joe Ledley is a worry.  Celtic need mobility and positional awareness in all positions tomorrow, Joe brings both elements to the party, how Neil Lennon compensates for his enforced absence in central midfield will be a key decision.

I also don’t subscribe to the view that, unlike a year ago, Barca will know what to expect this time.  Celtic’s 2-1 victory last season came after they took Barca to added time at the Camp Nou before Barca got their winner.  Barcelona knew exactly what to expect, they just didn’t know what to do about it.  I see no reason why they will be any better tutored this time.  Unless they’ve figured out a way of making wee guys jump higher than big guys.

We are fast, we’re tall, we defend when necessary and we run all game.  Unless Barca decide to play for a point and defend deep, which they won’t, they will play exactly as they did last season.

On seeing an X Factor item on the news I complained, “That’s not news”, but I was challenged, “If that’s not news, what makes football news?”  Sporting and entertainment events are news if those who produce the news determine it to be so, which places considerable authority on news editors.

Charlotte Fakes revelations have shown us how news professionals, keen to distract attention from a disaster zone of a club, tried to create negative ‘news’ stories concerning Celtic.

Three years ago the Green Brigade displayed a banner at Celtic Park which went largely uncommented upon for several days.  Four days after the event, the banner became a nationwide news story, TV news reported it and it made a Radio 5 Live morning discussion programme.

The delay in the item becoming ‘news’ was the most important part of the story.  It wasn’t news until the news editors had been convinced otherwise.  The damage to Celtic’s reputation was considerable.

Today news editors who ran that story three years ago have an interesting dilemma.  Do they run a story about an alarming message being displayed at a football ground, or without being lobbied, is that not a story?

Celtic don’t spend money trying to get negative stories about other clubs in the newspapers, but this is surely not exclusively the way the ‘news’ industry works.

We shouldn’t have to wait on a whistle-blower to shine a light on what happened three years ago, journalists know when they have been lobbied, and that’s the real story, which is not dependent on unfathomable leaks.

  1. It started on or just before 20th July.

Paul67 says he will check the exact date once he isnt driving.

  2. Messi is a unique talent and any team would be weaker without him. But when you look at the forwards they will line up with we still have a formidable task on our hands.

It’s a great opportunity for us though. Everyone knows we beat Barce last year. To do it two years in a row would be a phenomenal achievement that would raise our stock throughout Europe instantly.

Imagine the talented young players who will be looking for a move come January or next summer watching the hoops play against another of the world’s great teams in front of a packed Celtic Park crowd and dreaming …

  3. I just watched the Sunderland v Liverpool game and i was reminded of an old topic of mine. How is it that whenever a player leaves Celtic to join the EPL they become so much fitter and their body shape changes. Ki in this game was an example, but have a look at Boruc, Maloney, Caldwell and now Ki. The only one i can remember to show improved fitness at Celtic was McGeady. It is a worry that we are not getting the most out of players. Commins is a terrific player for Celtic but if he were at Arsenal would his body shape be the same? Don’t think so.

  4. As long as the blog did start on the 12th July 2004 anyone care to think how we could mark the occasion next year?

  5. NL: Like last year we didn’t budget for anything out of the Barcelona games, but if we do get something it would be huge going forward.

Having qualified last year from an exceptionally difficult group I don’t think that our stock could be much higher.

Despite this Neil Lennon has stated how problematic it has been to persuade players to come and play for Celtic in the SPFL.

I can’t see that changing any time soon unfortunately.

  7. Imagine if we had done something like a ‘Support the NHS’ celebration.

The sneering would be overpowering along with comments that if we felt so strongly, we shouldn’t claim for any allowances against Corporation Tax.

  8. NL: You need luck if you want to get something off Barca, and a good goalkeeper, and with Forster I have one of the best in the competition.

I have been a regular reader since 2004 and a very occasional contributor. The only interaction I have ever had – as as as I know – with any poster on CQN is when I spoke to Paul’s dad on the phone when contacted the call centre I worked in. Still with the same company but no longer on the phones thankfully!

This is the place I first read about amortisation, where the Seville money went and over the years have loved reading all the various opinions on here.

Thanks to TET I am now trying to persuade my wife that retiring to Spain and living in a cave house is something we should do when the time comes. TET it sounds like an amazing home by the way!

  23. Letter off to the papers for what it is worth.

In a media frenzy following a verbal tiff between the managers of Celtic and Rangers in 2011 a top level government/police summit was hastily called and spawned the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act, about which our Community Safety Minister Roseanna Cunningham proclaimed: “Football is our national game – millions of people are passionate about it. But we really can’t tolerate the complete corruption of that passion into hate – whether it is mass sectarian chanting or bullets and bombs in the post, we all know that it must stop.”

With great urgency and fanfare the Act was fast-tracked into law, on a vote which saw 100% backing by SNP MSPs and 100% opposition by MSPs of all other parties. Thereon a new police unit, FoCUS was set up to police football matches and zealously prosecute offenders against the new crime of causing offence at a football match.

I will be writing to Mrs Cunningham to tell her of the offense the scenes at Ibrox Park on Saturday caused me. Soldiers, sailors and airmen dancing, clapping, cavorting, and apparently joining in with the fans in singing “Derry’s Walls”, “The Sash” and “A Father’s Advice” a UVF anthem that mocks the death of Bobby Sands MP is offensive to most decent people and has no place anywhere let alone a football match in 21st century.

The FoCUS group police, officers whose job it is to stop this sort of thing were conspicuous by their absence! They are not normally so shy, and recently “kettled” a group of Celtic fans in Glasgow city centre, in crowd control tactics that would not be out of place in North Korea.

And where are the reports of this in the Scottish media? The Guardian and Channel 4 TV have reported it in all of its tawdry and sectarian detail, but whither our mainstream media?

It is not as if there is no story to report, the irony of Newco Rangers using soldiers in uniform to jingoisticaly promote their brand, while the Oldco Rangers FC, which is currently being liquidated as a result of withholding taxes from HMRC, which if paid might have provided the armed forces with adequate protection on the battlefield, is an obvious one!

No summit, no police, no politicians, no press demanding action? Why not?

  24. When times are hard —-.

Last night , Milan stated that El Shaaraway was fit and would travel to Amsterdam this afternoon .

He isn’t going , he broke a toe on his left foot whilst training this morning.

  25. For what it is worth this is the text of an e-mail I have just sent to Philip Hammond, Secretary of State for Defence.

    Sir,

I address you in your capacity as Secretary of State for Defence.

The following is a link to website on which the attached photograph was published earlier today.

    http://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2013/09/29/on-parade/

The photograph was allegedly taken at a forces related event held at a Ibrox, a well known Glasgow football ground on 28th of September.

    http://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2013/09/29/on-parade/

If the photograph is a forgery it represents a scandalous slur on our service personnel.

However, should it be genuine, it raises a couple of questions.

The first of these being, given that the soldiers in question allegedly represent, and are paid for by all sections of society, regardless of race, colour or creed, does the photograph depict behaviour befitting wearers of the Queen’s Uniform?

The second question is. Exactly who sanctioned members of all three services participating in the event at a Glasgow football ground where the chances of such a photograph being taken was not only possible, but highly probable?

Being charitable, as a West of Scotland Catholic, with relatives holding the same religious beliefs living in Northern Ireland, I can only conclude that some of the service personnel in question, unwittingly, or even unwillingly , found themselves involved in what has become a rather tasteless annual display of pseudo patriotism at the football ground in question.

I look forward to hearing your views on the above.

    Respectfully
