Best to Ledley, Goals Griffiths and Perpetual Movement Stefan

567

I read some discourse heading in the direction of Joe Ledley last night, which I can’t quite figure.  Joe had initially seemed keen to sign the contract which had been in his hands for several months.  Celtic wanted to get the deal done but it became clear this week that it wasn’t going to happen, and that Joe would leave under freedom of contract in the summer, if not this week.

This is the player’s absolute right.  He committed fully to the cause until full time on Wednesday, and when Celtic decided to accept a bid reportedly close to £1m, rather than let him run down his contract – most probably from the stand, he agreed to join Crystal Palace, who were almost certainly not top of his desired destinations.  Although he clearly pushed Palace all the way on the contract.

Joe could have just as easily free-wheeled for four months while continuing to collect his wages and shopping around for a new club, which would have suited him far more than Celtic.

Best wishes to Joe, I’m sure he’ll keep Palace up this season.

A formal welcome to Celtic to Leigh Griffiths.  His interview on Celtic TV last night betrayed an irresistible focus.  ‘What will you bring to Celtic?’  ‘Goals’.  That’s what it’s all about Leigh, score goals, lots of them.  Then score some more.

I was pleased Stefan Johansen got some game-time on Wednesday after 45 minutes for the youths on Tuesday; really hope we see him tomorrow.  Did you notice his movement on Wednesday?  Every time he passed the ball he sprinted into space.  Hope he gets a start tomorrow but most of all, let’s break a record.

    Hope your wrong.

But he wouldn’t be the first player to lose mobility in our cautious system.

Hopefully as our coaches gain experience we will be allowed a more expansive and creative style.

There are signs that the midfielders are finally being allowed to attack the last 3rd.

So perhaps the advent of a proactive style is upon us.

We can’t force big sammi to sign a new contract can’t understand why some people can’t get that through there heads

First off I am not exactly a Sammi fan. Blows hot and cold too often for my liking.

However, whilst like anyone else he cannot be forced to sign a contract, he can probably be persuaded. The problem being that the ‘persuasion’ may involve PL breaching Celtic’s salary and player acquisition policies. Policies which the recent transfer window has demonstrated to be set in stone even when there is relatively an availability about the place.

  6. Paul 67 et al,

I thought your last comment in your article was very poignant ” lets break a record”

A hypothetical scenario was debated the other day for a bit of fun. :- Would you rather win 1-0 ugly or have a high scoring entertaining scoreline of 8-2 ( Or similar ).

Going against all my principles of flair and entertaining football I chose the former scenario.

When we debate on this fine blog in the years to come statistics will be the only hard currency.

The great TB’s teams were a perfect example of this. Unfortunately the record books will only record the hard facts with statistics not the flair and entertainment we witnessed..

Even as we were leaving the ground on Wednesday, FF’s clean sheet stats was announced over the tannoy system.

Yes statistics matter, as ultimately they will be the only thing on record.

Ideally the most desirable option is to maintain the record breaking while playing the Glasgow Celtic way of flair and style.

    HH, always in Celtic

Sorry to see Joe Ledley go – can’t understand his thought process going to a team which is fairly certain to be in the relegation zone. It’s all about the money, I guess.

Anybody got a good recommendation of somewhere to stay in Tenerife late April for a week (from 25th)? Looking for a pure chill out All Inclusive, with easy access to a Tim friendly establishment for essential viewing as required. Thanks in anticipation.

    Afternoon folks,

Welcome Leigh to parardise. Hope your bad days off the park are behind you and your best days on the park are ahead of you.

I think Leigh will score a barrowload for us in the Premiership, but for Europe we will have to see how it pans out. Jury still out on that one for me at the moment, time will tell.

Goodbye Joe and thanks for the memories, you were a fine player for us and gave us some good moments, wish you all the best in your future career.

Big Sammi, think his best days in a Celtic jersey are through. At his best he is a fine individual player who is at times up there with the best. But for me his inconsistency and lack of team play has let him down far too many times. Our best spell this season in the League was when he was out of the team, and I don’t think it was any coincidence we played fast paced, flowing football that blew the opposition away, especially the thrashing of Hearts. When he came back in to the team the flowing football floundered, as the ball went to him he would mostly try to beat that extra man and the move would be lost, or he would pass sideways or backwards, or take too long to pass the ball to the man ahead of him. A very frustrating player to watch at times, but if he moves in the summer I will wish him well for all the good times he has given us.

  14. Ledley must be on a cut of the £1m fee received. It’s the only explanation for his change of heart. Even if it’s £250k it’s good business for Celtic.

Leigh Griffiths is effectively a freebie thanks to Joe. I know who I’d rather have. I’m happy

  15. IF Sammy stays I hope it’s for the same offer that was on the table before the window closes, I am sure PL WILL stick to his guns, on his take it or leave it offer, and that’s the way the club should be ran, no one player should hold us to ransom, better players have been here and gone, and we all moved on, .

Take your points re stats – they are a great argument settler on many occasions. However I should point out that in Tommy Burns middle season when we played the most entertaining football of his time and which was, arguably, the last consistently good Celtic team to watch we only lost one league game all season and only 5 in all competitions albeit nothing was won.

And I actually think people remember the great players for what they did not their stats or the honours the teams they played in won. Truly legendary players such as McGrory, Tully, Evans, Fernie, Peacock and Crerand won relatively little in their careers with us and yet are as fondly remembered as players from more successful eras. Records are nice, and stats are important but in 20 years time when I am even more boring than I am now I’ll remember guys like Broony, Sammi, Kris Commons and, hopefully, big Virgil ( and others) because of the impression they’ve made on me. Agree though it’ll be nice to point the trophies they won to back my arguments!

    Kind regards

UVF boss was killed at Ibrox; LOYALIST MYSTERY # Witness claims murder was covered up # He tells of attack on stadium staircase.

    Link to this page

    Byline: RUSSELL FINDLAY

A SHOCKED eyewitness has described how a leading UVF loyalist was murdered at Ibrox Stadium – and his death covered up.

William Taube’s head was smashed against the marble floor of the Edmiston suite inside Rangers’ ground.

In a sworn statement which has been passed to the Crown Office, the witness claimed he had been pressured to tell police it was an accident.

The witness – who is terrified of retribution – only spoke out as he could no longer live with the knowledge he had witnessed a murder.

He also wants to discover what happened to Taube’s mystery attacker, who he fears was killed in a revenge attack.

Unmarried dad-of-four Taube, 42, was co-hosting a Blue Mist function on a Sunday night in April, 1999.

Guests included several Loyalist prisoners recently released from the Maze.

Security was provided by Taube’s friends, including a leading member of the UVF in Glasgow.

Just after midnight, Taube, of Balornock, Glasgow, challenged an unknown man who was pestering female guests.

The witness, who The Sunday Mail has chosen not to name, says the man lunged toward Taube and headbutted him, causing the two men to fall down the stairs.

As he began punching Taube, he was attacked by a gang of Taube’s friends.

The pair then began fighting again and fell down a second flight of stairs.

This time Taube landed on his back with the man on top of him, cracking his head on the tiled floor.

An ambulance was called and Taube’s assailant was beaten up in the car park before fleeing.

Taube died of head injuries at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital. His devastated family buried him in the city’s Riddrie Park cemetery.

The witness last saw Taube’s attacker being chased down Edmiston Drive by up to 10 of his associates.

The witness said: ‘One of them told me, ‘He’s a dead man.’ I’ve no idea what happened to him.

‘I was told to say Taube had too much to drink and had fallen down the stairs.

‘I objected but two ex-prisoners at the top table threatened to kneecap me if I didn’t do as I was told.’

During his first police interview, the witness told disbelieving officers it had been a drunken accident.

He said: ‘They knew I was lying because they kept asking if I was under pressure and if I wanted to change my story.’

Several days later, police quizzed him again. This time he claims to have been threatened by an officer.

He said: ‘As I was placed in the holding cell, one said that if I didn’t say it was an accident, Taube’s pals would be told I was holding up the release of his body.’ Following the incident, the witness received death threats and his marriage hit the rocks.

He believes Taube’s UVF pals were told he had changed his statement.

Last night, Taube’s heartbroken mother, Isabella Wallace, revealed she knew his violent death had been covered up.

Most of Taube’s family were not there on that fateful night, although his son William Jnr, 25, and Taube’s common-law wife were present.

Isabella and Taube’s brothers Thomas, 45, and David, 43, believe secrets have been kept from them.

She said: ‘I said there was a cover up at the time and still believe it. William’s death wasn’t an accident.

‘I haven’t spoken to his partner since and I think she knows more than she’s telling us.

‘I even fell out with the police and told one in particular he was telling us a pack of lies – he seemed determined to get it out of the way quickly.

‘I went to the procurator fiscal’s office several months after William’s death and the woman couldn’t get me out of there quick enough.

‘I insisted on a post-mortem but the fiscal said it was only a head injury and that was all there was to it.

‘Even when he got to hospital they left him sitting in A&E for two hours.

‘I don’t know if that’s because they thought he was just a drunk who had been in a fight but I wonder whether they could have saved him.’

Isabella added: ‘Nothing will bring him back but there was more to it.

‘I don’t even have a picture of my boy. I wanted one to put in a necklace but he didn’t like having his picture taken.’ At the time, Strathclyde Police did not release details and officially decided it was a fall.

The fact Taube died as a result of head injuries sustained inside Ibrox Park remains undisputed.

The man in charge of the enquiry into Taube’s death was detective inspector Alan Kyle, now retired.

He said: ‘I remember Taube fell down the stairs from the cloakroom area towards the front door.

‘The circumstances were as we obtained them from witnesses at the time and reported to the fiscal.

‘As for the allegations about a police officer, I had no knowledge of them. If I had been aware, I can assure you I would have investigated it.’

Last night, the Crown Office said: ‘Any new evidence relating to this case would certainly be looked at by the procurator fiscal.’
