Best to Ledley, Goals Griffiths and Perpetual Movement Stefan

567

I read some discourse heading in the direction of Joe Ledley last night, which I can’t quite figure.  Joe had initially seemed keen to sign the contract which had been in his hands for several months.  Celtic wanted to get the deal done but it became clear this week that it wasn’t going to happen, and that Joe would leave under freedom of contract in the summer, if not this week.

This is the player’s absolute right.  He committed fully to the cause until full time on Wednesday, and when Celtic decided to accept a bid reportedly close to £1m, rather than let him run down his contract – most probably from the stand, he agreed to join Crystal Palace, who were almost certainly not top of his desired destinations.  Although he clearly pushed Palace all the way on the contract.

Joe could have just as easily free-wheeled for four months while continuing to collect his wages and shopping around for a new club, which would have suited him far more than Celtic.

Best wishes to Joe, I’m sure he’ll keep Palace up this season.

A formal welcome to Celtic to Leigh Griffiths.  His interview on Celtic TV last night betrayed an irresistible focus.  ‘What will you bring to Celtic?’  ‘Goals’.  That’s what it’s all about Leigh, score goals, lots of them.  Then score some more.

I was pleased Stefan Johansen got some game-time on Wednesday after 45 minutes for the youths on Tuesday; really hope we see him tomorrow.  Did you notice his movement on Wednesday?  Every time he passed the ball he sprinted into space.  Hope he gets a start tomorrow but most of all, let’s break a record.

  1. I posted on last thread. Great piece of business getting Joe to Palace. £1M in fee and saved wages between now and June.

My worry now is young Adam Mathews has lost his best mate in Glasgow.

Our midfield needs more creativity. I think we are all agreed on that. Ledley leaving frees up a space. Good luck to him. Joe is from Cardiff and is moving from Glasgow to live in London. A beautiful exciting city. He is 27 and served us well. He will be playing in a much more competitive league and is probably secure for life now with his deal. Is there anyone out there who would refuse such an offer in their own line of work?

Absolutely agree with you, and the example you give is spot on.

Just heard Dalziel saying if he won some prize of 20 grand on SSB he’d buy Balde at the end of the season. Cue laughter from Wishart and Delahunt. I hope Celtic are listening and ban the lot of them.

I was unfortunate to be listening at the same time as I was picking up my better half from work, reminded me of why I stopped listening to Snyde, bunch of sevco apologists the lot of them.

Shocking remark about a professional player in their own country.

    Kim Kallstrom update

“New Arsenal signing Kim Kallstom is set for a spell on the sidelines with a back injury that was discovered in the medical before he signed on loan from Spartak Moscow.

“The 31-year-old Sweden midfielder sustained the problem on Tuesday while playing football on a beach during Spartak’s pre-season tour in Abu Dhabi.

“He informed Arsenal of discomfort upon arriving at the club on Friday but, despite an MRI scan showing no damage, a CT scan found an issue with his back.

“The Arsenal medical team provided manager Arsene Wenger with the prognosis, but it was decided Kallstrom would still join and undergo his rehabilitation with the Gunners.

“He is expected to miss at least Arsenal’s next six games, in which they face Crystal Palace, Liverpool twice, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Sunderland.

“Kallstrom did not train with his new team-mates on Friday or Saturday and will briefly return to Sweden and Russia before moving to London and beginning a course of treatment.

“The former Lyon player, Arsenal’s only signing in the January transfer window, joined on loan until the end of the season to provide cover for injured midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, plus the suspended Mathieu Flamini

  9. Re idiots lampooning young Balde.

They wouldn’t do it to his face.

They are pandering to a lowest common denominator audience who know nothing about nurturing and developing athletes and pro sports performers. The AMA half wits who slaughtered VW and GS.

These sad former Huns have to deflect from their shambolic relic of a supremacist institution

They should be shown the basic stats that Balde has a 3 x better scoring record in the too league in Scotland than dalzeil had right now. In goals per time on the park.

  10. Best wishes Joe, going the same way as Yogie and Wispy all those years ago, I´ll always remember that header against Rangers in December 2011 which was the final nail in a football coffin. A vital goal, for which he will be part of Celtic folklore forever. Here´s hoping Leigh Griffiths has the hunger to write his own paragraphs in that history.

This is not directly to do with Celtic, but inevitably if it´s about football we play a part.

A Madrid man passed away early this morning at the age of 75.

He didn´t play in the first leg of the European cup semi final against us in Glasgow in 1974 but he played in the return leg. He also opened the scoring in the final against Bayern Munich with a free kick, only for Bayern to equalise in the 119th minute, which admittedly as a young lad I celebrated, as the antics of Atlético in that first leg had sickened us all.

The “first” time that I heard of him was as the caretaker manager of FC Barcelona, post Terry Venables, when he managed to win the Copa Del Rey and therefore qualify Barça for European competition, which maintained a record of that club playing in Europe every consecutive season until now.

Despite support for him to stay on as boss, destiny was to intervene in the shape of Johann Cruyff. He continued as a manager however and would train Atletico, Betis, Español, Seville, Valencia, Oviedo and Mallorca during his career and he surpassed the legendary Miguel Muñoz having been in charge of around 1,000 games for Spanish teams, including the national team.

When national manager, he called for a similar feeling of passion and pride in playing for one´s country as Argentina and Italy, as examples to follow. He even chose Scotland as Spain´s opponents in his first match as national manager as he felt there was a passion about us. It was a rocky road to ultimate success in the euros of 2008. He entered that tourney knowing he was for the off but steered his team to success in some very choppy waters. The Madrid media had castigated him for not playing the star from the city´s establishment club and crucified him for his remarks on a training ground when he was trying to motivate Jose Reyes by referring to the colour of Thiery Henry´s skin.

This man was known in his city as “El Sabio de Hortaleza”. Translated as “The wise man of the Milk”, if we were referring to a district in Glasgow. He was also called “Zapatones” referring to the size of his boots, “zapatos”, and like so many footballers in Spain he was always referred to by his first name, Luis and that would have been the name on his jersey. When the Vicente Calderon stadium was inaugurated he scored the first goal, he took over, a la Billy McNeil, as manager of the club when his playing days ended. Later in his long managerial career he had something resembling a nervous breakdown when he was a manager at Betis. In his swansong he managed the Turkish side Fenerbahçe and he saw out his last season. He went where football took him and I remember hoping he would go to Celtic, before Neil got the job a few years ago.

Madrid has lost one of its children, the indefatigable Luis Aragonés. Football has lost one of its own too, someone who brought beauty onto the field with the wee men of Spain running rings around opponents wherever they played. Not since the great Brazilian teams had we seen such flair. But the greatest loss is to our societies because he showed that when you are in a position, that if you are true to what you believe in, it can happen, regardless of what anyone says.

Spain is mad about football and there are many here who have called Luis Aragones “un loco” a crazy guy, such was his devotion and dedication to the game. But he also had a great family with many grandchildren and that meant as much to him I think.

    All the best Luis.

Thoughts and prayers with Raemonn´s family today, his legacy lives on.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has had to leave Tynecastle Stadium early after fans began throwing coins and spitting on him.

Lennon was along watching the semi-final between Aberdeen and St Johnstone when the incident took place.

This is the second time that he has been targeted at Tynecastle, he was attacked in May 2011 when Celtic played Hearts.

One witness said “It disgusting, the guy was just along to watch the game and gets targeted by so called football fans. This should not happen in this day and age, I was at the game for the duration and didn’t even know he was there.”

A current CFC player being disparaged live on air by a failed ex-manager, aided and abetted by others who always take the opportunity of putting a negative spin on anything to do with the club.
