Brilliant Oranje, notorious Franz

2184

Absolutely delighted the Dutch injected some swagger into the World Cup last night.  Diego Costa continued the pattern this week of Brazilian born players profiting from a tumble inside the box, gifting Spain an early lead from the penalty spot, but the Dutch were irresistible.

Exactly how they managed to improve their performance against Spain, four years after losing the World Cup Final with the imperious Edson Braafheid, is a mystery of the modern game.

Netherlands scored all those goals and created even more chances with a meagre 36% possession.  If they were German, we would be reverting to the national stereotype that they were the epitome of ‘efficiency’.

Speaking of the Germans, I’ve always had a lot of time for Franz Beckenbauer, but to find himself banned from football for coming up short in a matter with the words “Fifa” and “ethics” in it, must make him the most notorious German since, erm, well, in quite a long time.  With his former Bayern Munich teammate Uli Honess due to be jailed this month for financial maleficence, it’s better to assume no one in the game is above sticking his snout in the trough.

The soul of football depends on the outcome of this Fifa investigation; no one should be above its reach.  Beckenbauer’s provisional ban should be verified.  Kick him out the game.

Fantastic stuff on the blog yesterday from Bertie Auld; what an honour to have these great guys among us.  I’m heading to the Celtic Shop on Argyle St today where Bertie, Tommy Gemmell and John Hughes will be signing books between 13:00 and 16:00.  If you’re in town I’ll see you there.

The Big Cup’s going to be there, so bring a camera.

  1. The “off the ball” comedians are featuring all things about Scotlands 1978 Argentina fiasco . Archie Gemmel goal excluded.

I am a bit baffled by the lack of mention of Willie Johnston being sent home for drug taking. Surely the biggest story that came out of that misadventure.

Does this episode fall into the rewriting of history of any negative Ranglers related scandals. Of course he wasnt a rangler then .WBA I think.

I have met huns who honestly are unaware of any riot and european ban following their ECW 72 final win.

On cup final day I was meeting a few pals in the merchant city ( utd fans) then heading to the match.

I drove down London rd towards town to pick them up but the traffic was held up by the Neanderthals walking from Glasgow green to Bridgeton cross two hrs before the national cup final

My utd friends could not believe Glasgow district council would permit this

if they want to march, then tell them to hire a race circuit for the day, knockhill for example

it has a couple of miles of tarmac so they can march round and round til they drop

and theres plenty of grassy areas at the side for the drunken rags who follow them to shout their bile, fight with each other then collapse onto the deck

Why did Tony Blair (aka War Criminal) feel the need to wait until he was out of office before becoming a Catholic? It is not only Scottish politics that has an issue with Catholicism but UK politics as a whole.

You would think the way you bang on about Scotland and Catholicism that the UK was a religiously acceptable utopia were Catholics, Jews, Muslims etc. would be afforded a free path to govern the nation.

Ernie,I could not give a flying f about the SNP,or Salmond or Cunningham. How many Catholics they have.I care about my country being independent.

At the first election,Scotland will revert to type, and we will have a Scottish Labour Govt.,answerable to the people of Scotland.

    I don’t know.

Any notion that it was because he couldn’t or wouldn’t be accepted because he was a Catholic would make you wonder why the Tories chose a Catholic to be their leader.

Would they not have had the same concerns?

  14. I’m just pleased that an Independent Scotland will become a vicious dictatorship were voting will be outlawed, Alex Salmond will be crowned King, locking up all Catholics in cages will be the way forward were they will be afforded 8 hours a day out to mend pot holes in our roads and paid in potatoes which they will have the choice to eat boiled, mashed or roasted.

All one in the same selective amnesia. They’ve made quite a habit of rioting even when they won, the media happily recall the European Cup Winners Cup ironically defunct the same as the club that won it.

They hold a genuine world record for having a riot at the beamback of Manchester to Mordor.

Their supporters invading the pitch, before the game had ended in 1972 is another forgotten disgraceful factor, in the never mentioned European ban.

Some of the ‘media’ don’t even recognize that Sevco are banned from Europe and were salivating over the thought of winning the Scottish Cup, to gain entry.

I know Lord Patten is a catholic but the BBC like society in general has a dislike for Catholicism.

I’m a fan of Brendan O Neill who,as an Atheist, tends to expose the myths which aspects of the media love to attach to the Catholic Church.

How does your view of interdependency fit with the folk you want to be interdependent with?

No point introducing factors that make them want to be independent of us.

The problem I see with Independence is the throwing the baby out with the bathwater aspect.

This is in fact recognised by the debate on the currency or wanting to keep the Queen involved in some way.

The argument that Independence is the answer depends on what is perceived to be the problem and if it will fix it.

If the debate gets folk thinking on those lines it will be worth the debate but I’d rather a consensus was reached on what the problem is and an appropriate solution sought rather than an inappropriate solution is pursued.

Independence is for the long haul and it’s impact should be based on that.

The idea of a left leaning nation of 5M sitting on the border of what will become as a result of the removal of those left leaning principles, a right leaning one of 50M does not sound like a cunning plan to me.

Having divorced ourselves from our long standing partner will the relationship that results be as friendly as it is?

Does the removal of Scots from the English parliament also remove what influence we have over our neighbour?

A divorce without acrimony only happens when both sides agree. No sides seem to agree so it ain’t gonna be friendly.
