Absolutely delighted the Dutch injected some swagger into the World Cup last night. Diego Costa continued the pattern this week of Brazilian born players profiting from a tumble inside the box, gifting Spain an early lead from the penalty spot, but the Dutch were irresistible.
Exactly how they managed to improve their performance against Spain, four years after losing the World Cup Final with the imperious Edson Braafheid, is a mystery of the modern game.
Netherlands scored all those goals and created even more chances with a meagre 36% possession. If they were German, we would be reverting to the national stereotype that they were the epitome of ‘efficiency’.
Speaking of the Germans, I’ve always had a lot of time for Franz Beckenbauer, but to find himself banned from football for coming up short in a matter with the words “Fifa” and “ethics” in it, must make him the most notorious German since, erm, well, in quite a long time. With his former Bayern Munich teammate Uli Honess due to be jailed this month for financial maleficence, it’s better to assume no one in the game is above sticking his snout in the trough.
The soul of football depends on the outcome of this Fifa investigation; no one should be above its reach. Beckenbauer’s provisional ban should be verified. Kick him out the game.
Fantastic stuff on the blog yesterday from Bertie Auld; what an honour to have these great guys among us. I’m heading to the Celtic Shop on Argyle St today where Bertie, Tommy Gemmell and John Hughes will be signing books between 13:00 and 16:00. If you’re in town I’ll see you there.
The Big Cup’s going to be there, so bring a camera.

Swally sesh wi Celtic fans, practically on my doorstep?
I’m in….
Lawrenson is like that guy who doesn’t have a clue about football, never played the game, never watched it, yet startw talking about it. You humour him even though you can tell this guy knows nothing.
And yet Lawrenson actaully was a professional footballer making his pish even more bizarre
Lawrencen just called Messi “slugish”. Ffs irony.
Evening All.
This world cup is fantastic — don’t you just love football as a game when it is played really well? Bloody fantastic!
Stadium Name?
Always been Celtic Park to me over Parkhead.
Parkhead is the area — the ground is Celtic Park.
In much the same way the Milan teams play in the Meazza or The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza which sits an the San Siro district of Milan although it was originally named as “Nuovo Stadio Calcistico San Siro” (San Siro New Football Stadium) and only named in honour of Meazza in 1980.
Whatever it is called, it is the stadium in Glasgow where the great and the good of football come in the knowledge that they will get a game from the team in the famous Green and White Hoops….. and their support.
As one Spanish Football Magazine put it —- the greatest home advantage in world sport.
OK Argentina on …… should be good.
THE BOY JINKY
I’m wi yer wee maw on this one.
Although it did get knocked-well,laughed-outa me eventually.
Hard enough for me to master English without having a pop at foreign lingo.
BMCUWP, why I was surprised I just don’t know:-)
BRTH, looking forward to see hoe Argentina do.
Messi is the second/third best player I’ve seen play at CP.
The entire pizza debate is in the delivery.
That left back Rojo looks about 14, and our new signing I believe :o)

Behind McGarvey and Slater?
Me too :-)
HT, obviously!
Doc
:-)
Who’s been better in your opinion?
When I first moved to glasgow many years back it was Parkhead, and I remember at least once being corrected when I referred to it as Celtic Park ‘naebdy calls it that’.
Over the last few years there’s been a shift to CP I think. I quite like it – I especially like the way of referring to Celtic Park time.
McGarvey of those two, but Slater is a better commentator on Celtic.
The commenter now taken the pee out of Lawro
LONDONBHOY88
Well done,mate.
Only on the site five minutes and you’ve got us all arguing!
But since it’s about football-well done,that man.
Having said that I have never heard him comment on Celtic, with McGarvey I just wish I hadn’t.

Great players at Celtic Park?
Ronaldinho of Barca first time around put the living bejasus up me.
Robert Prosinecki was another who stood out.
CRUYFF,even in 82.
Rai, PSG
Trezeguet, Juventus
BRTH, Jinky and Henrik for me:-)
Of non Celtic players, Iniesta and Xavi.
Prosinecki was outstanding too. Ronaldinho, while he was great, not quite that great.
The Bosnians are tough, great tacklers
Riquelme of course (and that whole Villareal team) were outstanding that night
Always been Celtic park for me.
I was always told it was one of the factors that made us different – we did not name our ground after the local area .
Only other I can think of was St Mirren Park rather than Love Street.
