Brilliant Oranje, notorious Franz

2184

Absolutely delighted the Dutch injected some swagger into the World Cup last night.  Diego Costa continued the pattern this week of Brazilian born players profiting from a tumble inside the box, gifting Spain an early lead from the penalty spot, but the Dutch were irresistible.

Exactly how they managed to improve their performance against Spain, four years after losing the World Cup Final with the imperious Edson Braafheid, is a mystery of the modern game.

Netherlands scored all those goals and created even more chances with a meagre 36% possession.  If they were German, we would be reverting to the national stereotype that they were the epitome of ‘efficiency’.

Speaking of the Germans, I’ve always had a lot of time for Franz Beckenbauer, but to find himself banned from football for coming up short in a matter with the words “Fifa” and “ethics” in it, must make him the most notorious German since, erm, well, in quite a long time.  With his former Bayern Munich teammate Uli Honess due to be jailed this month for financial maleficence, it’s better to assume no one in the game is above sticking his snout in the trough.

The soul of football depends on the outcome of this Fifa investigation; no one should be above its reach.  Beckenbauer’s provisional ban should be verified.  Kick him out the game.

Fantastic stuff on the blog yesterday from Bertie Auld; what an honour to have these great guys among us.  I’m heading to the Celtic Shop on Argyle St today where Bertie, Tommy Gemmell and John Hughes will be signing books between 13:00 and 16:00.  If you’re in town I’ll see you there.

The Big Cup’s going to be there, so bring a camera.

    Prosinecki was brilliant.

Owen at Liverpool scared me to death too.

But the best I’ve seen at Parkhead/Celtic Park has to be Iniesta in my opinion.

I could watch him all day long and never tire of his touch, vision and ability to find space.

The_Huddle, yes, they were. Very possibly the best European opposition display at CP.

PSG were another great team display. Bayern?

We’ve been well beaten by teams, much better players, superstars, but that team Villareal, that night were crazy good.

It’s because of all those macho pretendy-soldier boys around there.

    And they all go commando,too.

  7. HT, I said Iniesta and Xavi, just because I see them as a pair, they dovetail like they are thinking the same thing. Just wonderful to watch, they made the great Barca team tick ove the last few years. Iniesta deserved the standing ovation he got at CP last season.

  8. This argentina game has provided one of the less riveting halfs of football we have seen at this WC. Mind you, I’d have a heart attack if the Celtic defence played the calm tippy tapy football in defence that Bosnia play.

Best players seen at CP with opposition- Gianni Rivera of AC Milan and Georgios Delikaris of Olympiacos.

  9. I hear there is uproar about Charles Green coming back to takeover The Rangers.

Please assure your The Rangers supporting friends that here is nothing to worry about – he is just a front for a guy from Motherwell.

  11. Drop them an email they’ll respond. Doesn’t seem right but maybe we’re missing something obvious

  12. Messi blowing his chance to go down as a great?? And ruining my chances of winning the Fantasy Football at work. Gone with Neymar, Messi and Campbell up front, shouldve went with Ronaldo??

I always thought the inter fans called it giuseppe meazza and the rossonieri called it san siro because whilst meazza played for both clubs, his stay at milan was brief and his best, successful years were spent at inter.

Anyway everybody knows that Celtic Park is the Doire GAA ground;)

  14. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    bsr,

As well as Fergus “making a point”, it was also his way of promoting Celtic as a brand name.

    I think he was right.

The term “manager” is almost obsolete in football.

With the amount of money involved in transfer fees, it is folly to hand the cheque book over to whoever occupies the head coach ‘s chair.

Each coach would want to sign his own players ehen get joined a club and, if he only lasts one if two years, the next guy want want his “war chest”.

    Unsustainable spending.

It is more practical to change an unsuccessful coach and keep the players.

Thst is why I’m pleased to read of Deila’s philosophy.

He’s always had that I don’t care play about him but the last couple of seasons he seems to go 10-20 mins in games not touching the ball.

  17. The_Huddle, Bhoylo83, perhaps his game is restricted by team orders with the national team in a way it isn’t with his club?

  18. He’s been the same with Barca, still wonderful goalscorer but something really off with him.

I’d imagine that Ronaldo will be trying everything going to get Portugal a win, diving shooting, kicking the whole works.

Of course Messi will now end up top goalscorer in this tourny :o)
