Brilliant Oranje, notorious Franz

2184

Absolutely delighted the Dutch injected some swagger into the World Cup last night.  Diego Costa continued the pattern this week of Brazilian born players profiting from a tumble inside the box, gifting Spain an early lead from the penalty spot, but the Dutch were irresistible.

Exactly how they managed to improve their performance against Spain, four years after losing the World Cup Final with the imperious Edson Braafheid, is a mystery of the modern game.

Netherlands scored all those goals and created even more chances with a meagre 36% possession.  If they were German, we would be reverting to the national stereotype that they were the epitome of ‘efficiency’.

Speaking of the Germans, I’ve always had a lot of time for Franz Beckenbauer, but to find himself banned from football for coming up short in a matter with the words “Fifa” and “ethics” in it, must make him the most notorious German since, erm, well, in quite a long time.  With his former Bayern Munich teammate Uli Honess due to be jailed this month for financial maleficence, it’s better to assume no one in the game is above sticking his snout in the trough.

The soul of football depends on the outcome of this Fifa investigation; no one should be above its reach.  Beckenbauer’s provisional ban should be verified.  Kick him out the game.

Fantastic stuff on the blog yesterday from Bertie Auld; what an honour to have these great guys among us.  I’m heading to the Celtic Shop on Argyle St today where Bertie, Tommy Gemmell and John Hughes will be signing books between 13:00 and 16:00.  If you’re in town I’ll see you there.

The Big Cup’s going to be there, so bring a camera.

  1. HT, that is not a promise that you will get 7, just my memory, which is suspect on a good day, when watching a game it’s awful.

Argentina deserved the win but almost got a swift kick in the Bosnia the end of the match ;)

  3. There’s been some horrible tackling so far in this tourny but the Bosnians have been hard but fair, good old style taking the ball tackling.

  4. HT, you will get the same points as I do. Anyhoos, good game, one moment of magic, and work tomorrow. Night y’all.

I’ve been impressed with them. Strength and no little ability, I’m pretty sure they’ll qualify.

Lots of credit due to Bosnia.

Superb defenders, wouldn’t mind a couple of them.

Way back in the days of

Yugoslavia, the country produced lots of strong, technically gifted players.

Firstly, thanks to you and all the others who’ve given us the game to play.

Secondly, Group J is the new black.

Thirdly, can you tell Mrs CRC knows her place that, yes I know my place.

Fourthly, positions 1 and 2 are nothing. It’s the race to be one of the six best 3rd placed

teams that puts even next season’s Scottish Championship in the shade.

I caught a bit of his interview on radio scotland on saturday afternoon.

He talked well of his time at the Champions. He said he was mainly travelling a lot , across europe, attending youth tournaments, club & international ones.he had been to Malta & Germany to name a few, watching players on the Celtic search/hit/checklist.He said there was a process of checking and scrutinizing players prior to the manager going to see them.he said he learned a lot and had more respect for NFL..just found it interesting how indepth it is trying to uncover that nugget o gold

The Georgious Samaras Story..Part Deka Tessera..Unemployed in Rio..

    ..

“As well as playing for Greece’s World Cup future, Samaras is also playing for his own. After all, having just ended his long association with Celtic, who declined to offer him a new contract, the 29-year-old has no idea where he will be playing his football next season. Nonetheless, he claims to be relaxed about a situation that, for the moment, is well below lifting Greece off the foot of Group C in his list of priorities.

“It’s no problem,” he said of his uncertain future. “I’m 100 per cent focused on the national team and, when the World Cup is finished, I’ll see what my options are and where my career will go. The only strange feeling, to be honest, is not being a Celtic player. I had seven great seasons in Glasgow and I grew up there, both as a person and as a player. But in the end a decision, which I didn’t want, was taken by other people. Now I will look for something new, but only after this tournament is finished.

“This is enough for me just now. The World Cup is the World Cup and, whether it is in Africa, South America, Asia or Europe, it’s the greatest thing you can do with your national team. Days like today hurt, but I’m very, very happy to be here.”

  18. I don’t agree, Summa. We should always make decisions in the best interest of the Club. I don’t know what it would have taken to have Sammy re-sign. I just know that the Club thought there was a use for that money which would be better for the Club in the long run.
