Celtic have had their warning shots

207

Yes, Newco players cheered hearing they would face Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final.  Manager, Graeme Murty, earlier explained the legendary status awaiting those players who deliver the club’s “first” major trophy, so chances are they will have to beat Celtic at one point.

Murty has twice taken his team to Celtic Park and left with a point, moreover, Newco eliminated Celtic on penalties at the same stage of the Cup two years ago, after a 2-2 draw.

Make no mistake, this is a perfect draw for Newco.  Celtic will have the league title secured well before the cup final, allowing Brendan Rodgers to rest players in preparation, should they progress that far.  During those final weeks of the season, Newco, Aberdeen and Hibs will fight-out for positions 2, 3 and 4.  They will not have the luxury of planning ahead for a final.  If you need to beat Celtic, better to face them before the final.

Anyone who thinks all Celtic need to do is go through the motions to win this semi-final, or this weekend’s game at Ibrox, needs to be reminded of trips to Rugby Park and Tynecastle.  We have had our warning shots.

  1. Would you play Jack Hendry as opposed to Compper?

Like the look of Hendry and he will be more than aware of the opposition.

  2. Copied from last page:

So midfield of Forrest, McGregor, Brown, Ntcham and Tierney or are you going 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 with Tierney dropping back and bringing Sinclair into right wing and Dembele up front on his own?

Celtic fans fearing the most hurtful defeat of all?

It returns every time to a game between two clubs where the billing is deliberate and plain wrong, if Celtic were to lose it’s as lamentable as it is unthinkable, but its only points.

The gap that appeared in 2012 can never be measured in points alone, the volume of unopposed support for the new Rainjurz can never be ignored and its Celtic that are rightly obsessed with our rivals whether they are old or new.

Focus on the treble by whatever means, just look at what happened when we weren’t so obsessed and original Rangers cheated themselves out of existence.

  4. Has the MIB been announced for Sunday yet? That is the key, whoever it may be will be all out to stop us. Need to press from the start and no messing about missing chances, early goal and build on it. They will be a stick on for a pen, mark my words. As Mr Stein used to say, take the MIB’s out of the equation by scoring more than Sevco. Think SS’s confidence is shot so would not start him, Eddie in for him. Broony needs to be careful, card is marked, however if we are cute Windass will lose it and could walk

Bada …. I am sure he would jump a the chance, but I cant see it PSG going for it …. he hasn’t won much of late, and their owners are wanting success… particularly in the CL …

  9. Come on, Bhoys. It’s Sevco we’re playing, not Rangers1872 with unlimited funds. Not one of their players would merit a place in our squad. If we turn up, we win! Simples!

Brendan’s job is to make sure we do. In Brendan we trust.

Everything else is speculation. and there will be lots of it; such as Brendan for Arsenal. Dembele for Barnsley blah blah. Anything to unsettle our fans. The players will know the script by now and will save all their talking for the pitch.

    Keep the Faith.

  11. BROGAN ROGAN TREVINO AND HOGAN on 5TH MARCH 2018 10:12 AM

    Good Morning Folks.

It will be interesting to see how much gusto is left in the Sevco sails after the game at ibrox. A victory for us makes the league all but won in my opinion, builds a platform for us for the cup and tears a hole in the mainsail of the Sevco boat.

*That was pretty much what I tried to say in my own convoluted way. After beating them and other than a defeat at Methil 4 days later and a set back at swinecastle after a bruising encounter 3 days earlier in the Fairs Cup where both Ian Young and Stevie !!!!! were sent off and John Clark and Charlie Gallagher left the field with bite marks, even the smsm defended us that night.

So a much changed side took the field that afternoon in Gorgie with several players out with stomach upsets, that’s what happens when you tour a Portuguese sardine factory and winery lol, and within 15 minutes we were 3 down but still fought back for a 2-4 loss a certain wee centre and a 2 players big Jock coveted but never signed put us to the sword that afternoon, nae big deal because we were still playing well.

So 3 days later it was Morton at hades in the LC Semi, they were a mid table team then but still only finished 4 points below us that season conceding less goals and included former Celt Eric Smith and future Danish hun players in their side, we were chanting bring on the huns as we ran out 2 goal winners while the soon tae be hun goalie put the proverbial shutters up for almost an hour.

We had also signed former Arsenal and Blackburn winger Eire international Joe Haverty and future Ireland hall of famer on loan from Milwall, Joe, who was capped 32 times including once when on our books would only stay a month and then returned south, no rationale behind that except the famed biscuit tin. I actually was at his only game for us a 4-1 win over the Buddies 1 week before the LC Final.

So off we went tae hampden, our first LC Final since hampden in the sun, a huge crowd was on hand and the Celtic end was stowed, we even had a bus leaving from St Kessogs although kerry oots were smuggled on board, this was at last our best chance of a cup since slumping against the Pars just over 3 years earlier.

And as I said, it was not too be, it was not as if we had played badly in fact the opposite but honest mistakes took care of that, the mood leaving the park that afternoon was grim and the huns couldnae believe their luck, I had just started Stow College and on the Monday it was still the same, the comment “wee curret heided bassa” could be heard as Jinky, who had been on scintillating form leading up to this game and had made his international debut at the same venue 3 days earlier, had missed a sitter early on in the first half at our end as the wily oul fox symon brought 7-1 veteran caldow back for this game.

And so a young Celtic side went rapidly downhill after that starting 4 days later where we were 5 down before we got on the score sheet losing 2-5 to the future champions’.

  12. @Paul67. Insightful as always but I smell a hint of fear? There are levels to this game and we have proven (on sporadic occasions this season I grant you) that we can operate on a different level. This newco, “Super Murty, Super Team” have not been tested as yet and this weekend, well, it’s time to see if they are passing O grades or ready for Sixth Year Studies…..

  13. just seen that video, what a bunch of clowns but they are evil clowns ,make no mistake that shower are out for blood, i fear for our players in these 2 games because they wont get any protection from the officials, might even come up, no ticket but just to give some solidarity, might have reached pension age, but id still give them scum some abuse, the last time i was at ibrox must be 40+ years ago, someone correct me but where the asda is now ,i think our supporters busses used to park there, and some pitched battles ensued.hh.

    Just a point of fact.

I regularly visit Italy in the summer and one of my favourite haunts is a wee town called Passignano which sits on the northern shores of Lake Trasimeno which is Italy’s fourth largest lake.

Passignano has an excellent blues festival at the end of July and on the last Sunday of the same month they run the Palio Della Barche which is a mad mental race round the town and the bay with bloody great boats.

Anyway, it was in an around Passignano that Hannibal led his Carthaginians to one of his greatest military triumphs over the Roman army.

On 24 June 217 BC the Battle of lake Trasimene, as it was known, took place as part of the second Punic War.

Hannibals tactics were a stroke of genius and the battle remains to this day as the greatest and largest example of a military ambush of any kind with over 30,000 Roman Centurians being killed or captured – the largest number of casualties from a single exchange in military history.

It is also the first and best known example of what is escribed as the turning movement. Effectively, Hannibal had come over the Alps and marched towards Rome at such a rate of knots that he overtook the legions of Gaius Flaminius and then turned back to face them.

It is also the first, if not the only, example of a military commander hiding an entire large army and lying in wait to ambush the opposition.

The four hour battle has been described as the greatest ambush in military history and it is the only time in the History of the Roman Empire that one of their famous armies was literally swallowed whole by the opposition. In fact it is said to be the only time in all history that such a manoevre swallowed a whole army.

News of the defeat caused utter panic in Rome and Hannibal and his army were left to maraud around Italy and mainland Europe for well over a year while the Romans regrouped, rearmed and gathered enough troops to mount a campaign to chae Hannibal from their sphere of influence.

Ultimately, The Romans caught up with Hannibal 2 August 216 BC at the Battle of Cannae.

There, in a far more open pitched battle, it is said that over 86,500 Roman soldiers faced up to a 50,000 strong Carthaginian army. This time there was no ambush, but such was Hannibal’s tactical superiority he inflicted an even larger defeat on the legions with over 70,000 of the Romans meeting their end and the remainder rounded up and captured.

In these two battles alone, Hannibal had defeated the equivalent of 8 consular armies (over 16 separate legions and more) and Rome had lost over 20% of its population to the meddlesome Carthaginian who immediately offered a moderate peace after Cannae which the stupid Romans refused.

He wasn’t to be messed with was Hannibal!!

  15. Don’t get me wrong in selecting a defensive team I still think we should be beating Mr Murty and his team by a clear 2 goals but these games have a habit of biting you in the rear :-)

  20. from a realistic point of view they better be careful what they wish for, pumped in the semis and the need third for europe , certainly not a given

  21. I’m to old in the tooth,to predict this Sunday’s result, being to disappointed, over the years,if Celtic win, great, but for some who come on here and say we will be to good for them, come away with 3 points, just think for a minute,we haven’t been firing on all cylinders ,some really poor performances,I know we have had a lot of injuries, but we should have had the resources,to cope with a lot of teams, anyway if we get a result against them ,like always I will be delighted, but don’t count your chickens till they hatch.

  22. Go tell the Spartim on

You expect it from the SMSM but from some on here youd think, that the Brazil 1970 world cup winning team were frozen in carbonite at the time, will be defrosted probably Friday to acclimatise to the current weather before facing us on Sunday.

Whilst no game is a given, we would need to play poorly and they would need to play beyond their current abilities, factor in that they will be more offensive in their approach.

The deluded on Swallow Swallow are predicting an easy win for them on Sunday; favourite score predictions for them are 3-1 and 2-0 to diedco with a fair few going for 4-2.

They are very confident of a win.

I look forward to seeing their reactions come approximately 2:15 on Sunday. My prediction is lots of sweaty words staring with the letters f and c!

  24. I never take a game against them (in whatever form they manifest themselves) for granted. Been pained/cheated way too often. You always have to factor in the mibs. After Beaton gave us a penalty on Saturday, just wait til they get a couple of extremely dubious decisions and the msm will rush to “these things even themselves up over the season” deflection. It wouldn’t be the first time by any stretch of the imagination.
