Celtic have point to prove in Europe

940

Celtic will face their first Champions League qualifying opponents on either 31 July or 1 August but heartbeats among the scouting staff will quicken tonight and tomorrow when every potential opponent will play in the second qualifying round.

A number of potential opponents from eastern and northern Europe are mid-season but all will benefit from successfully coming through two qualifying games before tackling seeded opponents two weeks from now.

It is crucially important that Celtic are ready for this tie.

The final qualifying round, scheduled to take place during the last two weeks in August, will offer a greater challenge on paper but European qualifying games in July are notorious for catching better teams unprepared.

After a credibly, though ultimately unsuccessful, Europa League group campaign last season Celtic’s domestic form clicked into place and we looked like a team capable of becoming champions.  There was some regret that we didn’t hit form early enough to make the most of our European adventure.  Neil Lennon will also be keen to avoid the anaemic performance against Sion, who beat Celtic on aggregate but were subsequently awarded two 3-0 defeats for failing to observe rules.

These Celtic players found hidden depths last season but they have a point to prove in Europe. There is also the nagging suspicion that this Celtic team is more talented that the two Gordon Strachan took to the later stages of the Champions League.

Bring it on.

  1. Morning,

Sevco players a closed doors game against Airdrie. Funnily enough they get a better write up than Celtic in the Hun. Report finishes that the ref had to warn an Airdrie player for making a comment that ‘rangers were a Third Division team’.

How the Hell do you get warned for that!

    lol!

If they have to relinquish their tainted titles & they are awarded to Celtic & we are in a position to have won the most league titles does that then make us the greatest team in the world like they claim to be ?

Would that then mean that We arra peepul ?

    Hail Hail.

  3. Happy Birthday, Mrs WG. The triplets should be named: Henryk,Danny and Jimmy but if they are boys you could call them…..o:-)

  4. The great fire of Rome began today AD64 and lasted 8 days..

not as long as than the great shaming of the orcs..

  5. The SFA released a statement yesterday regarding the Rangers FC situation. One would not imagine from reading it that there have been frantic efforts over the last couple of weeks to have them admitted to the second tier, rather than the fourth!

The SFA seem to have a grasp of most things, but, not surprisingly, there remain a number of questions to be answered. In addition, as Duff and Phelps are meant to certify the new owners as fit and proper, one wonders if that has been done already, as Mr Green is now threatening to sue them! You could not make it up!

I also suggest that the calls for Mr Regan and the SFA to be found in contempt of court are unfounded, and why the SFA can impose as a condition of membership a sanction found to be ultra vires as a punishment.

  6. got this from the telegraph comments page

    send to ALL HUNS

Former SFA President George Peat was part of the SFA board which originally cleared Jim Farry of all wrongdoing against Celtic when he deliberately delayed registration of a player in order that they could not play for Celtic FC against Rangers FC (IA). George Peat was also caught on Sky TV celebrating a goal for Rangers against Celtic. http://img690.imageshack.us/im

Current President Campbell Ogilvie is a former employee, director, shareholder, and EBT recipient from Rangers FC (IA).

Of course, we also have the Chief Executives, such as the aforementioned Jim Farry, who was forced to resign for his anti-Celtic actions.

There’s also former Rangers FC (IA) player Gordon Smith, who joined the SFA as Chief Executive, before leaving to move back to Rangers FC (IA) as a director of football.

This is before we even start to get into the likes of SFL President Jim Ballantyne, former Rangers FC (IA) shareholder most recently spotted at a game (against Linfield) to raise funds for the Rangers Fans Fighting Fund.

Now we have Michael Johnson on the SPL board, the only SPL chairman not directly connected with Rangers FC (IA) who didn’t vote against admitting Sevco Scotland Ltd into the SPL.

Then there’s the vice chairman of the SFA Referees Committee and SFA council member David Dowling, who is openly a Rangers FC (IA) supporter, and holder of shares in Rangers FC (IA).

There’s also David Oglivie. Name ring a bell? Yup, he’s the brother of Campbell Ogilvie, and is also the SPL Operations Administrator.

I could go on, but I don’t think there’s any need.

It’s about time this little cartel of Rangers FC (IA) employees, shareholders, supporters, players and directors was busted, for the good of the game.

  7. Morning CQNer’s

Would just like to say that….EVERY Trophy that the huns have ‘stolen’ during the SDM-Big Fat Lie-era should be stripped and awarded to the team they stole it from. imo.

  14. Sevco get their pre season entertainment underway

BBC this morning…………… Sevco V’s Duffer & Duffer

The consortium in charge of the new Rangers is threatening legal action against the administrator who sold them the old club’s assets.

Sevco Ltd claims that Duff and Phelps reneged on a deal to pay back around £500,000 put up by the consortium to help fund working capital when it agreed to buy the club back in June.

But Duff and Phelps has denied that the money should already be paid back.

It says it has a legally binding agreement that it has adhered to.

BBC this Morning………. Bomber Brown V’s Sevco

Former Rangers player John Brown has put £40,000 of his own money into a fans’ fund he hopes will wrest control of the club from the Sevco consortium.

He has already urged fans to boycott season tickets for the new Rangers that Sevco hope to field in Division Three.

“It is only right that as I have been out in the front of this, I should put my own money in too,” said Brown, who is to launch Rangers For Change

“I’m not a wealthy guy and £40,000 represents a huge commitment for me.”

Brown gave up his job as a Rangers scout to lead takeover attempts after the consortium led by former Sheffield United chief executive Charles Green bought Rangers’ assets for £5.5m after the failure to avoid liquidation.

    Loving it

    Tell me this:

Does UEFA’s suspended sentence on ground closure and kicking out of Europe apply to the Newco or does it die with the Oldco?

Or because Newco wont be anywhere near Europe until the next millenium mean that UEFA’s suspended sentence is pretty irrelevant?

  21. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

The Oldco/Newco is a bit like looking at ole Cher

On first impressions you think’ she doesn’t look bad for 66[?]’ but then on closer inspection it becomes apparent that some of the ole bits are new, and some of the new bits are ole.
