Celtic spectacular interims

498

Celtic’s revenue bounced back from the year without fans in the six months to 31 December 2021.  Income was up almost 30% to £52.9m, only £8m below the full year earnings to 30 June 2021.  The club reported a £7m trading profit before intangibles in the interims, released this evening.  But wait for it……… Add in the profit from player sales of £25.9m and you get a pre-tax profit £27.6m (intangibles, like amortisation are deducted before the pre-tax position)!

Player acquisitions during the period totalled £16.8m, which will push our running annual amortisation charge up a tad from it’s trend of £13m.

Cash in the bank on 30 June was £25.6m, which goes some way to explaining the splurge of signings we have enjoyed in the intervening period.

Manage your assets

The first take away for me is the contrast between our £25.8m earned in player sales to the £1.0m earned in the corresponding period a year earlier.  We kept Edouard, Ajer and Co. in order to chase another milestone.  Player trading is where it’s at.  Sure, it is risky, do not expect the kind of value and performance we have seen in the last two windows forever, but we trade or we fail.  I remember the good old days on here, when managing your assets was a controversial aim.

Win the league

The second observation is that this was a season with Europa League football.  Imagine, for a second, we got to the Champions League next season.  The possibilities are really quite interesting!

  1. I see Gareth Bale had his first start in 6 months – I wonder how much he’s earned per minute of game time over the last 5 years

  2. A Lennon/Brown double-act could look like a ‘fit’ at Aberdeen – however I doubt the fan-base would be too enamoured.

I must say I also ‘hae ma doots’ about the new regime at Hibs….but it’s early days.

As a ghuy who spent a lot of years working and socialising in

Eberdeen, I can assure you they will welcome anybody that can bring

    some success to their club.

They don’t particularly like us, but I’ve found they hate the hun with

venom, think it might go back to when the Engerlunders blockaded

their harbour during the Jacobite rebellion. 🥴

O.k that was a bit of a stretch, but it works for me. 🤣

‘Reading back now and came across the post about Bridie Gallagher.

Remember being told years ago that a Forfar bridie got its name from

a girl who made them and sold them at a outdoor market there.

    Her name being Bridie Gallagher,’

    #####

‘The word “Bridie” is Scottish vernacular for a meat pasty. It is claimed that the word bridie comes from ‘brides meal’, the pasties being served at the wedding feast and fashioned into a horseshoe shape the symbol for good luck. They remain a traditional part of many wedding menus and are often served at christenings.

Local stories claim the ‘Forfar Bridie’ originated from one Margaret Bridie of Glamis who sold these meat pasties at the Buttermarket at Forfar in the eighteenth century. Recent genealogical research shows that there was a Margaret Bridie who lived in the first part of the eighteenth century in Glamis. She is buried in Glamis Kirkyard and her headstone makes reference to the product.

One other claim to fame that Forfar has is that they once played East Fife in a league cup game which went to penalties with the final score being

Don’t think Aberdeen would touch Lenny

    —–

You’re probably right – but is there anyone out there who can claim TEN top tier honours and some European success?

Lenny appears stranded in ‘no man’s land’ as far as management is concerned – a shame really.

  8. No Chance Lennon will get the Aberdeen job ,They the Dons could do worse than go with Paul Hartley,Scott Brown ,Barry Robson,or possibly John Kennedy ..

  9. There you go ERNIE, a quality post, and you didn’t try to antagonise

anybody, you know you can do it, so more please.

And amazingly I remember that FORFAR 4 EAST FIFE 5 when it was

read out on the bbc at the time.

Another thing I remember about Forfar is, I woke up there one

morning after three weeks offshore and my breakfast was a cold

    Bridie.

    Can still taste it 🥴

Match report from The Scotsman, 13th February 1922

[…] The Celtic and Third Lanark had a much closer tussle at Cathkin park, Glasgow, than was anticipated. Third Lanark held the visitors throughout the first half. Their defence was severely tested, but nothing that the Celtic forwards could do was enough to break down dour opposition of Brownlie, McCormack, and Orr. Play veered in favour of the visitors in the second half, when the only goal of the game was scored by McInally. The result was a correct reflex of the play, the Celtic being, if anything the stronger side in the first half, and superior after the interval.

I agree 100% but while the referees and their masters wave through the attacks on skillful players and allow the levels of brutallity without applying the rules of the game it’s just not going to happen.

Thanks for sharing. I am reading a great book about the 1914/5 season just now. A good few names survived to play in the match you mentioned.

  16. Watching Arbroath v Hibs. It would be good to see Arbroath in the Premiership next season. Nice compact stadium with good atmosphete when full.

Also, with a hospitality ticket you can go for a paddle in the North Sea at HT.

  18. I watched the Beatles Get Back Part 1 last night. Interesting and entertaining.

George Harrison didn’t come out of it very well. Came across as a petulant schoolboy taking the huff because he’s not getting his own way. After he walked out declaring he’s leaving the band, Paul and Ringo said, “What do we do now?” Lennon said, “Get Eric in.”

    Looking forward to part 2.

  19. I think Foster saying on Sly Spots Jack Ross would be a good fit for Aberdeen, that could be a go .
